When you meet Edward Elric he gives off the impression that he's the short-tempered hot-headed "violence is the answer to all life's questions" kind of protagonist, and it's in fact incredible character craft that he's actually the character who ends the series with a negative-3 kill count.

I watched the English dub more than the Japanese dub, so my immediate thought was, "No, Al said his face still has some color," since I know Aaron Dismuke's line so well. But I looked back at the JP dub and Kugimiya Rie's line is:

It really is a shame that Al doesn't have many fights in the 03 series (in general honestly speaking, but its glaringly obvious in the 03 series when compared to Ed's escapades). I admire how the animators depicted his fighting style as a more evasive and calculated type while taking his large frame into account. His movements are refined and his attacks have weight to them, but there's an evident amount of restraint that comes with his inability to perfectly gauge how much force he's using.

He's also surprisingly swift on his feet when dodging attacks. Even prior to the boys officially starting their training with Izumi, Al is shown to dodge quite a lot and really well at that.

No wonder Ed could never beat him💀the kid was getting whooped long before alchemy was ever brought into the equation.

thinking about how wrath's arc in 03 ends with him begging for a way to do human transmutation so he can bring his mother (sloth, trisha) back and then losing his arm and leg to the gate; and ed—who had insisted that homonculi weren't people, who originally wanted wrath to give him back his limbs and insisted that wrath didn't have a mother, who got hit with wrath screaming at him "she was your mother too!"—ed's last act before he sacrifices himself to get al back, is to ask rose to take care of wrath and bring him to resenbool where ed knows wrath will be cared for. ed's eldest half brother is gone, he is about to sacrifice his existence to give his younger brother a chance to live, and i think that by sending wrath to resenbool he is in effect acknowledging wrath as a brother as well. he can no longer call wrath (or envy for that matter) an interloper or fake, and i think that by extension he is accepting that when he killed sloth, he killed a person; he killed his mother again. wrath himself called her their mother—after accepting that he doesnt want to be human, ironically, he also recognizes ed as a person now, instead of a body to steal! and he does so because of the agony ed has chosen to inflict on both of them! recognition of the other through the ability to inflict and share pain.

full circle for both! they are both their mother's child, they are both cognizant of the other's personhood and struggle, they share the same pain and love and agony. all is one, one is all.
