The rain was coming down in sheets outside, bouncing off the floor and making those who had braved the weather even wetter. Josh stood in the window of Betty’s Kitchen, watching the rain instead of closing up shop. He hadn’t realised he’d been staring for so long, him only being dragged out of his thoughts by the sound of the bell above the door chiming. He really should have flipped the ‘closed’ sign. “Sorry, we’re about to close. The chef’s already gone home for the evenin’.”
The night shift in general was Satan, but having to stay later after already working the whole day? Jesus didn’t die for these sins. Running a hand down his face, Scott ambled into the diner, already half asleep and definitely in some kind of unsafe mindset to be working still. He turned to the direction the voice came from, and instantly whined at the words. “Aw, man. I’m sorry. I was actually just after a coffee -- do you know where I can get one? Maybe even in an IV drip.”

“It’s like you don’t even know me, why would you even ask that, Scott,” Scarlett scoffed. She pulled a face at his mocking, nudging his shoulder. “I can’t believe people have the audacity..” she mimicked his words, trailing off with the same mocking face, mocking his tone. “We’re all very shocked and confused that Captain Snoozefest isn’t on my side and we’re planning a revolt for this Thursday at 3pm. Pitchforks and everything, we’re going old school. Care to join?”
“The audacity.” Scott repeated in a whisper, the dramatics between them never fading for a moment. Who let them be partners? Ridiculous. “Captain Snoozefest. You say this shit to his face, right? I can’t believe you’re the only person who can get away with it,” A roll of his eyes punctured his quick remark before he kept rolling. “I’ll have to check my calendar, but you know how devastated I’ll be if miss all the pitchfork action.”

Zane squinted his eyes at the other before snorting out a laugh. “Scott, you’re a fucking police officer. How do you not have to permanently leave the lights on?” He shook his head, figuring at a certain point, there was some sort of forced desensitization that must happen. “Plus, being scared is good for your health… for real. Look that shit up.”
Scott paused for a moment, lips turning down in that strange frown that really just said ‘true’ when his words didn’t. “You know I don’t do things that are good for my health. Did I tell you I had a friend come over the other night and cook me a meal full of vegetables? It was disgusting. I felt victimised.”

Evelyn’s posture relaxed slightly as the officers retreated from her home. She held back her laughter once she realized what her method of defense was. She glanced at the glass of water in her hand, and realized she was still wearing the clothes she had slept in. “I grabbed the first thing I saw. It’s probably better I didn’t grab the baseball bat by my bed,” she responded, setting the glass on the counter. “I really didn’t know anywhere around here had self-defense classes.”
Irritation was prickling under his skin at the slip-up of his officers; in a regular mood and environment, Scott would have joked his way out of the accidental situation, but the confrontation had put him on the side of annoyance at his colleagues. However, the more she spoke, the more he felt like the normal Scott and an easy, conversational tone returned. “You’re right, using a baseball bat would’ve gone terribly. But I can say that the station puts on self defence seminars once a month and I’m sure you could get boxing lessons at the gym... or something like it.”

“A burrito eating competition? … Gross. I’m trying my hardest not to be judgmental right now, but God, I am failing hardcore. At least I tried. You’re kind of cute though, so I guess. But um, no, I have no idea. What happened?”
“Burritos are delicious and nutritious and I will not take that attitude... well, I will, or-- whatever. Wait, hold on, did you say I’m cute? Can we put that down in writing? Considering you don’t know anything. ...That should probably not change.” The intensity of her stare was really messing with the whole ‘put a sentence together’ thing he was trying out.

“Oh, absolutely. They’re few and far between so it’s definitely award worthy when it comes.”

Jude cracked a smile, happy somebody got her deranged over the line sense of humour, as she crossed her arms over her chest listening. “Oh, damn, you mean around here? No, I haven’t heard or seen anything about that. I mean I was drunk as fuck when I finally went to bed. Like we’re talking face first into my pillow. I even had on one of my pumps when I woke up. My hair was like stuck to my cheek because of all the dry drool on my cheek. Anywaaaay, my point being was I’ve been passed out like all day today. I woke up like an hour ago. Sorry I’m universally useless.”
As she shared her story, Scott’s eyebrows began to raise, and he almost thought they’d be in his hairline by the end of it. “That sounds like one hell of a night,” He quipped, in sincerity; he wasn’t one to judge, and there was something about the way she spun it that made it sound like the painful aftermath was well worth the time. “Don’t worry about it. I’m sure we can rustle up something from people with lives less wildly fun than yours.”

It had been a long day at the office before Rory’s was finally able to make her way out. Still in her vet scrubs, she made her way over to the park to release some stress. Sitting on some random stone steps, she pulled out a sketch pad and started doodling away her worries. A voice startled her out of her focus, causing her hand to flinch and mess up the portion of her art. “Ah, shoot,” she exclaimed before looking up at the stranger, “Oh! Sorry! Am I in your way? I’ll move!"
“Hmm?” Scott instinctively sounded, looking down at the girl on the steps. Honestly, he hadn’t noticed her until now. “Oh! No, it’s alright, I’m-- fuck sake. Lost my friend’s kid and this is going to look really bad. I was just... trying to find him.” Turning his gaze back to the park, he narrowed his eyes to where he’d just shouted at. Both Ana and Gabe were never going to let him look after his godson again if he couldn’t find Matthew -- especially when they were both in an important meeting over the fate of the child. “Matty, come on!”

Anastasia flushed her cheeks in embarrassment at her old preschool nickname, but one that had stuck with her permanently for Scott. Of course he was the only exception to that name otherwise they’d mess with her badside, he created when the two were toddlers and it wouldn’t be the same if anyone else had used it. “Of course I do – what kind of friend would I be if I didn’t?” she questioned as she arches her eyebrow slightly. “Oh boy you see sugar is good as a treat not your entire diet, that’s it! I’m coming over tonight and I’m cooking you a nice vegetable hearty meal okay?” she said as she placed her hand on his arm worryingly it had come naturally to her with him. “but first sugar” she continued with a small nod, there was no way in hell today she’d give up her sugary diet she’s been on a healthy binge after all. The blonde walked up to the counter and ordered her meal as she waited for the other to do so before taking a seat for the both of them. As he eventually came over to join her once he too did the same, she smirked over at him as she decided to have a small talk conversation. “So, anyone catch ya eye at your job?” She hummed as she waited for a hopeful answer.
At the mention of vegetables, Scott couldn’t look more devastated if he tried. “No, don’t do that to me. My personal instructor already gives me a hard time. I eat enough vitamins, okay! ...And yeah, they’re the gummy types so my brain thinks it’s eating lollies, but who cares.” He paused, pouting momentarily as her hand rested on his arm, before their attention diverted to the nearest cafe. He followed in suit, allowing her to take charge in the dazzling way she always did (really, you couldn’t take the lawyer out of a person); when he reached the counter, he ordered only a takeaway mocha after the quick check of his bank balance on his phone, but then waited it out by sitting with her. Her question caught him off guard - visibly - and Scott had to immediately banish the thoughts of Scarlett. “No, what? Why would you ask me that? That’s stupid. Are you really asking me how I’m going to fuck up HR’s life?”

“Ah, ain’t that a relief,” Julie let out a little laugh and a shake of her head soon followed, knowing that her own form of jokes were totally a lame attempt. It couldn’t hurt for her to try, right? Glancing up toward the stranger beside her, Julie then crossed her arms, her face scrunching up slightly as she tried to think of anything to help the guy out. “Sadly, no. I think I got a grumble and half wolf whistle when I parked, but no, other than that I haven’t got anything.” Shrugging her shoulders, Julie brushed her hair from her eyes and looked up at him. “Sorry I wasn’t that much help. What’s your next plan of attack?”
“Half a wolf whistle? It’s like their heart wasn’t really in it to be a douchebag. Pathetic.” The lightness of his tone alluded to a jest, even if his heart wasn’t in it; whilst Scott was known for being immature and joking, when it came to his job, he was still one of the best detectives they had and that reputation started by his sergeant and colleagues wasn’t something he took lightly. Sure, he might’ve started the day with a burrito eating competition, but he’d end it with an arrest and nothing less. “Well forensics is dusting down the scene so we’ll just have to hope something comes up there, or check cameras, or-- you can’t really be interested in hearing what the police are gonna do.”

“Unless you give me a specific reason, I won’t be hurting you.” She would have been offended that he would think that she would hurt him; but she wasn’t fazed by his assumption. “Oh so you’re a good boy? How can you be so sure?” She teased, trying to lighten the conversation and the atmosphere between them.
“Oh good!” Scott instantly brightened, leaning comfortably on his forearms that rested on the bar counter-top. “I... sometimes my Sargent tells me I am. Does that count?”

“I so don’t even want to hear the aftermath over that.” Jude scrunched her nose up at the thought, mildly grossed out but resumed her attention back to the other. “What happened around here?” Her short hair swatted her cheeks as she looked around them, dazed. “I’m not sure what exactly you’re talking about, bruh? Gimme your deets and I’ll give you my deets?” Jude suggested.
“No one does.” Scott murmured, almost haunting in his tone. Detracting his gaze from the citizen, he looked around, lips pursed on how best to tell her without spreading any kind of fear or drama; crowd control wasn’t one of his best skills, considering he suffered so terribly from ‘foot-in-mouth’ disease. “It’s nothing all too bad -- just a store break in before opening hours, but it wasn’t ass o’clock so we just gotta see if anyone saw anything.”

Evelyn quickly shook her head. “Unless you’re the one breaking in then I’m pretty sure you’ve got the wrong place.”
With a stifled sigh, Scott turned and walked back over her threshold, leaning out into the hallway to yell to the retreating officers: “Nice one, dicks.” He rotated back to face the blonde, intending to apologise and excuse himself, but instead he noted the situation and couldn’t help a remark. “Ma’am, if that’s your method of self defence, I really think you should attend some classes ‘cause that’s not gonna work out for anyone.”

“Totally” Anastasia replied with a wide grin, if there was anything she loved more than work it was shopping and what better excuse to shop than for her friends. “I’ll buy you the designer collection only the best” she insisted knowing that she would buy something that looked great on her friend, even it was just a pair of socks. “oh I was waiting for you to offer for the donuts” she chuckled as she picked her shopping bags back up and began walking next to the male to the nearest coffee shop in the mall. “great because I was dying for a good coffee and a chocolate croissant”
“Designer underwear and socks -- you know the way to my heart, Ana-Banana,” Laughing at her remark, Scott began to walk in a conspicuous direction towards a cafe that was also in line with the crime scene, all the while chatting. “No, see, if I had donuts I would’ve eaten them already. I can’t offer them based on that alone. -- Wait, chocolate croissant? Double sugar and sweetness? I need it. Immediately. ”
