#125 Domestic study: Now and then (1995)
One of my favorite movies ever!
true life.
except i didnât have boobs to duck tape down.
Scott.. Yeah? If you tell anyone about this, especially your brothers, Iâll beat the SHIT out of you.
NOW AND THEN, dir. Lesli Linka Glatter (1995)
one of the bestttts
One of my favorite movies.
miss this movie so much.<3
This 1995 gem comes to us courtesy of former Bangle Susanna Hoffs.
Now and Then, for those of you who werenât twelve year old girls, is the female equivalent of Stand By Me where four twelve year old girls have an adventure blah, blah, blah, itâs your clichĂ©d coming of age story for girls.
And itâs actually really good. I donât know how to describe it but itâs one of those mid-90âs all star casts movies you gotta see.
Anywho, this was the titular song played at the end of the movie sung by Susanna Hoffs, formerly of the Bangles (the 80âs girl group who sang Eternal Flame, Manic Monday, and Walk Like an Egyptian). I donât know if she had a successful solo career but did you know she has another movie connection through music. In Austin Powers Goldmember Austin sings in a band called âMing Teaâ and Susanna is the guitarist (and Susannaâs husband was the movie director Jay Roach)
*If I remember, there was a long instrumental after all the lyrics so I think this version I posted is cut
FUN FACT: Co-writer and background singer for this song is Jane Weidlin of another 80âs girl group the Go-Gos. Jane was also the singing telegram girl in 1985âs Clue and the voice of Hex Girl drummer Dusk from Scooby Doo
Now and Then- Susanna Hoffs
Started out just like any summer When days have felt a lifetime long Thatâs when we found each other And we found ourselves, oh, oh, oh Now and then (now and then) Donât have to look back Now and then (now and then) Youâre right here with me Now and then, oh my friend Donât say goodbye again Lookinâ in your eyes was like a mirror Every single joy and fear All for one and one for all Yeah, we did it all Now and then (now and then) Donât have to look back Now and then (now and then) Youâre right here with me Now and then, oh my friend Donât say goodbye again And though it was long, long ago So here, here inside I know Now and then (now and then) Donât have to look back Now and then (now and then) Youâre right here with me Now and then, yeah my friend Donât say goodbye again
Oh, oh, oh Oh, oh, oh Lookinâ in your eyes was like a mirror Every single joy and fear All for one (all for one) and one for all Yeah, we did it all Now and then (now and then) Now and then (now and then) Now and then, oh my friend Donât say goodbye Donât say goodbye Donât say goodbye again
Let me tell you why Now and Then is an excellent movie
This is more than a chick flick that I have fondness for because of nostalgia. It is THE chick flick. And not the stereotypical BS that is dubbed a chick flick nowadays(the ones that involve girls sniping at each other over a man or popularity). No, this is a movie for girls that treats them equally with respect and deals out hard truths of adulthood while still holding on to the power of love and friendship. It is a beautiful movie with so much heart and love put into it.Â
It teaches us about death, family, sex, gender roles, and all these other themes about growing up and none of the girls resolve these through a love interest but with each other. It is overall a feminist movie that doesnât shame girls for being girls. If youâre all about female friendship, this is the movie you have got to see.
now & then.
