every morning the paper comes, bright and early, thrown on your doorstep by an over-eager child biking for pocket change. the child does not read the front page headline, therefore his life is happy. his mother does. closely, she guards him from then on, hiding him indoors, dressing him in strange clothes. she takes away his bicycle and he cannot go back to work.
he cannot speak now, cannot be heard by curious ears pressed to the window pane. he is the Un Boy, the Disease, the Threat. he does not know this. all he knows is he cannot be himself and be known; to do both would be a death sentence. he is forced to grow his hair long, to step into mary jane's on his 14th birthday, to be introduced to the world anew. they call him a strange name he does not recognize. they stare at his legs and his chest, searching for meaning within them.
by his 16th birthday his mother has stopped saying his name altogether. she dresses him in white and sends him off to a short, ugly man he has met once before. the ugly man calls him Bride, calls him Woman, calls him Womb. the boy knows now that he will not be himself ever again.
the boy and her husband do not live happily, for the boy became a man whilst bearing her first child. she listened to the doctors call her Mother, call her Caretaker, call her Wife. she loves her daughter fiercly, even though her husband does not. she hopes to god that her daughter remains just that. the boy will not allow her same fate to befall the child. the boy cradles her child close to her chest and tells her secret.
the girl raises his daughter without help from his husband. he begs every day to understand the life he has been given. he worships the ground his daughter walks on, until his daughter is old enough to understand. the girl weeps when his daughter calls him Father, calls him Man, calls him Strong.
the man and his daughter are hung the next day.
