Just finished watching the new Watcher update video.

While I wish the plan they’d outlined in the video (releasing stuff on YouTube a month after the initial release on Watcher TV) had been the plan all along, I at least appreciate their willingness to compromise and take the audience feedback seriously when they screwed up royally.

I also appreciate them acknowledging the tactless nature of the “everyone can afford it” comment — $6 might not seem like a lot of money to them as successful business owners in a high cost of living city, but where I’m at that’s a gallon and a half of gas or a loaf of bread + peanut butter to make myself lunches for a week. I’m personally lucky enough that the price wouldn’t have been off-putting, but the attitude behind the initial comment definitely was.

Don’t get me wrong, they still burnt a lot of bridges with their audience + were definitely reading from prompt cards, (and there’s definitely an illusion of trust that has a nasty crack in the facade), but popping the bubble around their echo chamber and taking the weekend to understand why their fans felt hurt is a step in the right direction.

I watched Charlie MoistCritikal’s video on the Watcher drama and he definitely has some good insight considering he runs a company that helps creators get sponsorships, and finding out that with their subscriber & view counts they probably get $15,000-$30,000 per ad read was like the final nail in the coffin for me. So they make $100k a month on patreon + an ad read a week + ad revenue + merch sales? Maybe slow down on making new shows. Cultivate what you have. Maybe remaking worth it… isn’t worth it.
