I opened my heart, cast it out like a net, eager and curious to test the waters. Its strings had barely sunk beneath the surface when you swam in, equally eager, equally curious. I watched you tread water Steadfast and peaceful, Ardent yet patient, Admiring me admiring you. But you are not the fish I am seeking. So I release you. Send you off, back into the water And watch you swim away. “It is for the best” I tell the sorrow in my stomach. “Wanting something does not mean you should have it” I tell the child within me. “There are many fish in the sea” I tell my romantic sensibilities. But on occasion— when I let myself indulge the longing— I remember what it felt like to have you, however briefly. I remember what a beautiful fish you were and during lonely moments I picture myself wading out into the clear water after you.
