No because SERIOUSLY. we deserve some of that graphic fanfic shit at this point.
Newbie fic writer, long time reader query:
How do y'all find folks to beta?
I want to respect any norms. What's the process like to find and ask folks? Also, is the support mostly technical, or do they help with story ideas, etc?
( I also respect if it's just something that organically develops between long established writers, but I thought I would ask!)
x files au where the aliens still abduct Mulder at the end of season 7 but he’s so annoying they just return him like the day after

For @calimanc, who sent me this prompt two years ago. Thank you to my friends who helped me along the way through beta-reading and cheerleading: urlovingfriend, @unremarkablehouse, @bakedbakermom, @baronessblixen, and @bookishscully. The original prompt came from a list by @cecilysass. Set in late season 5. This is a finished fic and I will be posting a chapter a day.
Summary:
Following a lead on a case they just can’t seem to solve, an accident leaves Mulder with supernatural powers; the same powers their main suspect seems to posses. In a race against time to stop a series of murders, what could be a key to the case instead puts new obstacles in their way.

Even outside of the discourse about consent and the Great Mutato, this line haunts me. It’s a fact thrown out to add to the mystery. However, the reality that this woman made this choice about her body and her life which was then violated and disregarded is never addressed.
The episode never address the impact on this character and her perspective is never taken seriously. That could be because of the comic book tone of the episode, but given what happens to Scully later in the season, it seems to be part of a general sense that no matter what women say or do, they ultimately always want to mother.
I’m not saying this to be overly negative on the episode, but this assumption shows up throughout the show (and in a lot of other sci-fi).
The X-Files star David Duchovny told SCI FI Wire that he had a lunch reunion in Los Angeles recently with his co-star Gillian Anderson and series creator Chris Carter to discuss the long-gestating sequel movie. “That was nice,” Duchovny said. “I see Chris quite a bit […] but I hadn’t seen Gillian in a while. So it was like a reunion. It really was. It was more emotional than I would have thought it was going to be. If you spend that much time with people and go through that much, there’s a lot of residual feeling.”

Their fraught-ass relationship history is stuff of legend, but maybe with getting older it makes more sense to me. Just having such complicated feelings for someone you went through so much life with- when you just weren't quite mature enough to handle things with mutual care -like ultimately with time and distance you can just appreciate the person as a person and look back to find all that was good and worth treasuring. Which itself is achingly bittersweet but also healing. And then a friendship can begin in earnest, because there isn't this huge *thing* between you anymore.

the character work in the X-Files pilot is exquisite. the first time I watched this episode, when Scully grips her arm rests on the plane and Mulder just rolls over to look at her while he lounges across a whole row like it’s nothing, I was like OH it’s like that? in that moment I got them both. the X-Files overall is great at making Mulder and Scully full people by giving them traits that are just part of them, and they’re almost never remarked upon or central to the plot, they just are. and that’s the whole pilot. Mulder reads his future partner’s senior thesis to get a sense of her. he makes every space his own but can never get comfortable. he takes runs but would like a running partner. he never seems to sleep. he’s wild eyed, but he still wants to back up all of his ideas with proof. Scully admits when she’s scared. she’s curious and she works late and she laughs when she encounters something she doesn’t understand. but she has Mulder figured out immediately, and she calls him on it. (“better than you expected, or better than you hoped?” like hello!!! that’s PERCEPTIVE, babe.) and it is remarkable that Dana Scully, skeptical scientist doctor, wears a cross necklace and it’s never commented on. no dialogue about what a mystery she is because she has religious faith but doesn’t believe in aliens. Scully’s just Scully. she isn’t someone to be solved. (neither one of them is treated as a puzzle to be solved; because they just get each other right away, and because the show gets them right away, the x-files doesn’t waste time making us ask who these people are. the question is always “what will they find out there?” they are the constant, not the variable, which is why they’re the heart of the show.) they’re going toe to toe the whole time, but every challenge they throw at each other only makes them like each other more. the pilot just gets immediately that these two people recognize integrity in each other. honestly Chris Carter made a faustian bargain to write eight good episodes of television and the X-Files pilot is one of them
honestly… do you know anybody who came back from the dead and immediately upon seeing you joined you in holding your boss at gun point… no questions asked… because that’s the only definition of love everything else is a lie
No questions asked EXCEPT "are you ok, Scully" 😭😭😭 and then their lil reunion in the hallway 🥰🥰🥰 the sweetness and sexiness and intensity of this scene CANNOT be matched 👌
a foundational msr moment for young me...

Proof that DD & GA are OG shippers 🥰
It's always great to catch moments when Mulder and Scully forget they're surrounded by people:
Omg yesss. They became so totally obsessed with each other that they do not clock the existence of others nearby.
Freak for Freak 🤝

Being a 90s shipper was a study in gaslighting.
Chris Carter (and much of the misogynistic fan base) mind-fucked us so bad that I would often be like-
"Wait ..are they not *obviously* in love? Am I just a lil freak for wanting these two to smooch??"
And then I remember that this was the FUCKING PILOT.
