4.05.2024 // an overview of my april'24.
I've been trying to keep a track of how I spend my days. It is hard to not be harsh on myself when I see how many 'break' days I took, but then I have to remind myself that I took those days off for a reason – be it to travel, to explore the city, to do chores or simply because I knew that I wouldn't be productive that day. I started off with a simple tracker but I hope to gradually build on it and adapt it in an useful manner.
Breaks are so important! It actually reminded me of school when I was 17/18 years old or exams in college.
When I was 17/18 I didn’t study a lot. Back then I spent a lot of time working in a restaurant, fridays were for friends, … I did stay on top of things, it wasn’t like I didn’t study at all, but actually only 3-4 evenings (what really isn’t much looking back). However these 3-4 evenings were enough!
In exam season while I was in college, I really struggled with the long studying days. I saw, heard other people studying for 8+ hours and that just isn’t for me. I felt the perfect study day for me was only 5-6 hours. It’s really hard not to be harsh on yourself for studying only so little in comparison to others, but since it felt right for me, I should stick with it! Also I’d rather study effectively for 5-6 hours, than slacking for 8+ hours.
There’s a reason lots of good parents say to babies stuff like
“You’re excited to go to the park!”
“Oh, it makes you mad that we can’t go outside.”
And then when the babies get a little bit older the parents can say
“You seem upset. Are you sad?”
“Are you excited that gramma is coming over today?”
Which lets the kid (who is learning to utilize speech) respond with yes or no, which may prompt more questions, like
“So you aren’t sad, are you angry?”
“Yes, does it make you happy when gramma is here?”
And then, finally, when the child is learning to use language in a more complex way, the parents can say,
“How does it make you feel?”
“Why are you feeling like that?”
And it’s all about teaching emotional awareness. I really reccomend using the process on yourself. Learn to ask, “am I happy?” “Am I sad?” “Am I anxious?”
Then practice identifying, out loud or on paper if you can, “I’m happy.” “I’m upset.” “I’m sad.” “I’m anxious.”
Final step: “Why am I feeling anxious? I’m still thinking about that awkward conversation earlier.” “Why am I happy? It’s such a beautiful day outside.” “Why am I sad? None of my friends are responding to my messages.”
It really helps you notice patterns (“I’m more likely to be happy when I’m around this person.” “When I haven’t eaten, I often feel angry.” “If I don’t plan ahead, I get anxious.”) which is the first step in avoiding things and people that are bad for you and encouraging things and people that are good.
Basically don’t forget that you’re just a baby who got more complicated.
Not sure how to articulate what you are feeling? Try starting at the middle and working your way out to the more specific feelings!
Great observations and advice! Having trouble identifying your own emotions is called alexithymia. It can be accentuated by neurodivergence and some neurological conditions, or just because you were never taught to identify and name emotions, but most of the time it can be trained even in adults :) Being able to identify your own emotions can also make it easier to understand how others are feeling!

I took a class this semester from the faculty of educational sciences (out of curiousity). I actually quite like it. But this book is horrible to work with hahah... It's just very different and vague, but it is what it is.

why isn’t anyone allowed to be wrong anymore? it’s okay to be wrong. being wrong, and realizing you were wrong, is how you learn and grow.

fitness: dancer sculpt workout
academics: completed chapter notes & discussion—most importantly, i paced myself.
spiritual growth:
• just want to share bc this chapter has been so pivotal to my growth: today marks one year since the end of a long-term relationship that once took a heavy toll on me. so today i celebrate the purging it took to get here, and the mended relationship i have with love as a result. just a few months ago, i didn’t know if i’d ever truly heal, but here i am. 🩶 my heart goes out to anyone healing from a trauma bond. it’s difficult beyond words but so possible.
• we don’t need to hold onto what we brought us happiness and security in the past. happiness and intuitive wisdom are just side effects of being present. everything we need finds us in this moment.
a/n: i’ve been singing hanni’s version of once in a moon all day. it’s like a lovely lullaby for the occasion.
