But in my liberal-arts way I was very drawn to what good search, and the promise of finding information, might offer.

A memo from 20 years ago, today.

The gist of my essay published a year ago today by the Irish Times:
The significance of emigration, for Ireland like anywhere else, is that one countryâs loss often means anotherâs gain. The reach of a single village can be disproportionate to its size.

As reported by Matt Vande Bunte in yesterday's Grand Rapids Press:
âWeâre just growing a lot down here, shipping out more coffee every week,â [co-owner Ryan Knapp] said. âWeâve got bags of coffee all over the cafĂ© and itâs not decoration. Itâs just overflowing inventory.â
Whenever Cathlin and I head back to Grand Rapids, we try to stop by Madcap on Monroe Street. Beautiful space and delicious coffee. Always a highlight during our visits.
While the headline here may overpromise the outcome (i.e., it looks like the space -- shared with another local favorite, Brewery Vivant -- would be used initially for roasting and eventually for a second cafe), hopefully the planning approval goes through without major hiccups.

Used Storify to hold onto the various threads of conversation prompted by the London Irish Centre's recent "Being Irish in Britain" conference:
On Saturday, April 5, 2014 the London Irish Centre held a one-day conference to discuss what it means today to be Irish in Britain. Like many, I followed along from afar -- in transit between Washington, DC and New York at the time.
Much to consider here around the experiences of emigration and immigration, issues of identity, community supports, political interests, and the differences between past and present.
