Derek could tell that he didn’t want to go into all that. “I know I would probably be the same as you are if I was in your shoes.” He told him. Derek watched as Ben placed the baby into his arms. Looking down at the little girl, he then heard what Ben was asking. “Oh…I don’t know. Maybe we will just have the three. But then again…I have four siblings. So…who knows.”
Ben nodded and moved a hand to squeeze Derek’s shoulder when he mentioned that he would do the same. It felt good to have the support because at times, it felt like Ben and Miranda were fighting against the entire world to keep Pru with them. He chuckled when Derek mentioned that he didn’t know where their family size would end up being ultimately. “Did you like growing up in a big family?” he asked.

addison sighed with frustration , her final surgery of the day had gone on longer than expected and she just wanted to get out of the hospital . she scrubbed out and went to get changed into her street clothes . no less than twenty minutes later and she was at joe’s nursing a vodka soda with a much more relaxed attitude . ‘ hey , you look like you’ve had a worse day than me … ’ she mumbled across to the person who’d just sat beside her . she smiled in their direction and lifted her drink , ‘ i think you need one of these , my treat . ’
“Addison buying me drinks?” Mark asked raising an eye brow with a grin. He had just finished up at the hospital, and although it hadn’t been a particularly bad day, it had been long and challenging. He slipped onto the barstool next to her. “What’s got you so down Red?”

“Fine. You’re right.” Charlotte couldn’t disagree with her there. Looking at the brunette Charlotte sighed. “I don’t have time to go back down to the cafeteria.” Opening up her drawer she looked around for any snacks she might have laying around. Cooper would often leave her things to eat and she was sure there had to be a protein bar around here somewhere. Opening the other drawer she found an entire box of protein bars. “I can count on Coop to leave me food.”
Lexie chuckled when the woman pulled out a protein bar and mentioned her husband leaving them around for her. “At least he is good for a few things,” Lexie teased and winked at her friend. They had had numerous conversations about all the things Cooper was good at over the course of their friendship. Lexie reached for her water bottle and twisted the cap off before taking a sip.

Derek hadn’t been in a joking mood at all since everything. So that little joke was a start. “At least you are doing better now. Better than you were.” He said. “I am still dealing with this.” He said as he held up his left hand. He wasn’t quite able to grip anything with that hand. So doing surgery was out of the question. Derek felt her squeeze his arm. “I do think that is a good idea.”
“I am better than I was,” Lexie agreed as she stared off for a long moment. She had wondered for weeks now though if it had been worth it? Had all the pain been worth surviving? Her recovery hadn’t been easy. Life was not easy. There were still so many unknowns, but she couldn’t think about those things or she would easily get overwhelmed, which didn’t help anything or anything. “We could do PT together?” she offered, unsure of if her brother-in-law would be interested or not. “At least you’d have a friend who understood.” Lexie smiled when Derek liked the idea of a book. “People would probably hate it. It doesn’t need to have a redeeming message. It’ll be fine.”

Meredith nodded. “That is true.” She said. She wasn’t sure if she meant with Derek or Zola, but either way it was true. Meredith noticed that Lexie was only half paying attention. Walking closer, she stroked Sofia’s cheek. “I know what you mean. Derek tells me I can be like that. It must be a Grey thing.”
Lexie chuckled when Meredith mentioned the rambling being a Grey thing. She nodded and looked back at her sister, offering her a warm smile. “It must be,” she agreed. “Think Zola will do it when she’s bigger too? Because that would be kind of adorable.”

Derek went over to get himself a drink in the attendings lounge. Besides what had happened to him and the day it was, he just thought he was moody. He hadn’t realized that he seemed unwell for a while. At least in the eyes of Mark. “I have to be okay.” He said, not really taking notice of what he was doing as he made his drink.
Mark nodded again and allowed a long pause to stretch between them. He had wanted and hoped Derek would say more as he focused on his drink, but no more words came. “Why do you have to be alright?” Mark asked, his voice soft. Maybe, if he could understand the headspace Derek was in he could help more.

APRIL WOULD ALWAYS BE taken aback when Jackson paid her a compliment. They could be married for years and years and that same fluttery feeling in her stomach would remain. She would be nervous every time she saw him, but the minute he touched her, it went away. So as he reached for her cheek, the nerves settled and she sunk into it. “I’m ready.” She told him gently and reached up for the hand on her cheek. She threaded her fingers with his and lead him to the door.
Once they were in the car, April reached across and took his hand again. She never wanted to stop touching him. He was her saving grace and he would always be that to her. “So, are you going to tell me where we are going?”
Jackson smiled as his wife reached for his hand. He laced their fingers together and gently stroked her knuckles with his thumb as he continued to focus on the road in front of him. “Uh no. It’s a surprise, but I will give you a hint,” Jackson told her as he glanced over at her. “They have amazing steak and we have eaten there before,” he added. “So I guess technically? That is two hints.”

The paramedic grinned, pulling Lexie close, wanting to just hold for a little while before they had to deal with the rest of the world. “Slept better than I have in weeks to be honest.”
Lexie nuzzled against Maya’s warm skin when the other woman pulled her closer. “Good, I am glad. I’ll tell myself it was because I was here,” she said with a wink before kissing Maya’s shoulder.

Ben shook his head. This was not nothing. He stepped out the door and wrapped an arm around the other man's shoulders. "Come in. Let me take a look?" he suggested. This was not something Ben had expected this evening, but it was a good thing. Meant he could keep a check on things. Miranda would understand.

Derek knew that they were hoping to have Pru soon. From experience, he knew how that wait could be. Even if it wasn’t the same with Zola. “That is good to here. I am sure it will be what you want to hear.” He said. Derek looked at the baby as she stretched and then heard Ben. “You know I wouldn’t say no.” He smiled. “I think Meredith might get worried if she sees me though.” Derek added, ready to hold the little one.
“I hope so because the Millers? They haven’t been kind, and they have no interest in honoring Dean’s wishes,” Ben frowned and shook his head. “Which I will never understand, but I guess when you don’t understand why your child wanted a different life....” he started and shook his head again. It wasn’t worth getting into. “Yeah? No more for you two?” Ben asked as he transferred the baby into Derek’s arms.

LEXIE SHOOK HER HEAD at Jackson and forced a smile. “You don’t have to say anything. You don’t have to say anything at all. It’s just nice that you’re here. That you’re with me right now. That I have someone.” She rubbed her thumb over his cheek. “You didn’t have to be here for me right now, but here you are. I don’t deserve you.”
Lexie had been out of the hospital for a week now and that was after extensive surgery on her spine and weeks of PT. In that time, Mark had been awake once. She had seen him, sat with him whilst she was in her wheelchair, but he had slipped back into a coma that night. Jackson had consoled her, removed her from the room and calmed her down. She was torn. She loved both of them but the more time she spent with Jackson, the more her love for him grew. He would do her exercises with her, help her with her medication, take her on short walks around the park and happily push her the rest of the way back. He was perfect and she loved him.
The sudden urge to tell him that overwhelmed her. “I love you so much Jackson.” She mumbled, pushing herself up as much as she could so she could kiss him.
Jackson let out a breath he didn’t realize he was holding when Lexie said he didn’t have to say anything. It meant he didn’t have to keep trying to search for the right words. He squeezed her a little closer and kissed the top of her head, thankful for that. “Lex, I wasn’t going to leave you alone to go through this. That would make me an asshole.” She had been left so many times before, and he wasn’t interested in Mark kicking his ass when the plastic surgeon was finally well enough.
Jackson lightened his grip on the woman next to him when he felt her shift. He looked down at her and was surprised when he heard the words come out of her mouth. Before he could process the statement completely, Lexie’s lips were pressed to his. He gently cupped her cheek and stroked her skin with his thumb as he returned the kiss. He had no idea what type of ‘I love you’ that had just been, but he didn’t care.

“HE WOULD APPROVE OF everything you’ve done. You’ve bettered yourself, you’ve built yourself into this person that isn’t just defined by his family’s accolades. You are your own person and that’s what Mark stood for.” She took a breath and smiled slightly. “Did he ever tell you about his childhood? How his parents didn’t want him so he moved in with the Shepherd’s? He had to build himself into this person who could love himself because when he was young, no one loved him. Take that lesson and change it for Harriet.” She lifted her drink to her lips, took a sip and then placed it back down and turned to look at him. “Teach your daughter that even though her parents aren’t together, she is still loved by them both equally. Think of Sofia, she had three parents and now look at us; one is dead and the other two are divorced. What example are we setting for her? I’m not sure, but we show her everyday that we love her and that her daddy loves her. Mark will always be in her life.”
Jackson leaned in to Callie as she spoke about what Mark would think of him now, and said Mark would be proud of the man he had become and the career he had made for himself. The words meant more to Jackson than he would ever be able to say because not only had Mark Sloan been his mentor, he had been his friend and a sort of odd father figure, but a better one than Jackson had ever really had in his day-to-day life, but he had never said thank you.
“I appreciate that Callie,” he said, his voice quiet. Jackson reached for his glass and took another sip of the liquid inside. “He mentioned it in passing. We never really got into the details, and I never pushed. I figured if he wanted to share those things with me, he would when he was ready,” he explained. Jackson wasn’t one to typically push people, especially Mark. It just wasn’t in his nature. Maybe because it was something his entire family did over the course of his life or watched them do that to so many others. Push for information. Push for details. “Harriet will always know how much I love her. How much April loves her. I try to make sure she knows every single day,” he admitted softly.
“I think you are setting an example to her that life changes and we have to keep changing with it, but that doesn’t erase what we shared with someone. Like you said before, you still love Arizona, but for whatever reason, it just didn’t work out. The reason isn’t my business, but I highly doubt Sofia thinks about it often because you two still love her,” he insisted and then shrugged his shoulders. Jackson knew he likely sounded stupid. How many drinks had he had?

Maya smiled happily, shifting closer to Lexie and wrapping an arm around her. “Did you sleep okay?” She asked, hoping that she too had managed to get a few hours of sleep at least.
Lexie curled up close to the other woman, and nuzzled against her shoulder before kissing her skin. “Amazing. What about you?” she asked as she traced shapes into the skin on Maya’s opposite arm.
