“Oh, those are fancy. Tiger lilies?” Holster asked, popping his head into Ransom’s cubicle.

“Yeah. They’re my-”

“Favorite,” they said in unison.

“Jinx,” Holster said with a wink. “Who are they from?”

Ransom looked at the small card tucked into the bouquet of flowers. “It doesn’t say. Just says, ‘You are a wonderful person whose smile brightens my day.’ Nothing else.”

Holster reached over and tousled Ransom’s hair, not that it did anything; the tightly coiled curls were cropped too close to his scalp. “Sounds like someone has a secret admirer. That’s cute.”

Ransom shrugged. “If you say so. I hope they don’t like expect me to just date them because they sent me gifts.”

A flash of an indecipherable emotion washed across Holster’s face, but it vanished in an instant. And without another word, Holster left Ransom’s cubicle and went back to work.

For the rest of the day, Ransom tried to put the flowers out of his mind. Yet, his thoughts kept drifting back to his mysterious admirer.

“Good afternoon”

“Hello there young man. How many?”

“Two, please” he responded. He glanced over at Ransom who was vibrating out of his skin. His eyes were huge, his lips pursed in concentration, and his back stretched to try and get a peek past the gates. He’d spent a month creating and refining a spreadsheet that “perfectly maximizes our animal exploration time.” Their itinerary he now clutched in his large hands. Holster couldn’t help but smile at his boyfriend’s excitement.

“That’ll be 35.95” He handed the woman his credit card and turned towards Ransom again. When Holster had suggested this a month ago, it was before a bombardment of new customer meetings, budget realignments, new team member onboardings, and all manner of project delays and hiccups. He couldn’t wait to get in the gates and put the month behind him. He smiled again as Ransom saddled up beside him.

The admissions lady passed Holster back his card and a receipt which he signed. She slid him two maps. Before he could grab them, Ransom had snatched one away and was ripping it open.

“Excited, aren’t we?” the lady asked. Holster chuckled.

She began to speak again but startled a bit at Ransom’s boisterous “Woo hoos” He had grabbed Holster’s hand and was tugging him towards the gate.

“Well before you guys head in there, do you have any questions?”

“No I think we have everything covered. Thanks!” He let Ransom tug him about a foot.

“Have fun and welcome to Franklin Park Zoo.”

Welcome to the 2018 Check Please! Big Bang! We are excited to host it this year! This is a purely informational post, so don’t worry if the only links are to an extended schedule and the rest of the FAQ. **All things are subject to change**

Schedule:

May 19th: Signups begin for authors, artists, and beta.

June 23rd: Signups close for authors.

September 17th: Signups close for artists. (as well as claim summaries posted).

November 12th: Fics and artwork posted, 3-4 pieces a day.

Rules:

Authors, word count is 15,000 words minimum.

All fics must be betaed. Your beta does not have to be someone from our group.

Artists can create 1 of several options: gifsets, with 6 gifs minimum; a fanmix, 8 tracks minimum and a cover; podfic and a cover; 2 manips; or 2 art pieces that are more than a sketch

Last day for authors to drop out is September 10th. If you must drop out for any reason, you must tell us.

For legal reasons, we cannot allow children under the age of 18 to write, beta, or create art for explicit content. Failing to follow this rule will result with a ban from the bang for the remainder of this one and until you are 18.

What is a Big Bang?

It’s an event where authors write a lengthier fic for a fandom and an artist makes some type of fanart or edit to go with it.

What is Slack? Do I have to use it?

Slack is a group messaging platform designed for collaborative work. It has the ability to create sub-groups focused on specific topics and can be used both through your browser and mobile/desktop apps. Our Slack will be a good place to do word sprints, ask questions and just hang with others in the Bang, but you are not required to use it. All information that will be on the Slack will also be sent via email (or posted on this tumblr).

“Yeah, I get that,” Holster said as he brandished a pair of pizza scissors at him, “but why, Ransom, would anyone need a pair of these? What makes this monstrosity easier or quicker than a pizza wheel? Why?” he whined, which had always been a bit jarring to Ransom, seeing someone that large reduced to childish whining.

Ransom’s eyes scanned down the paper registry printout. “Look at the bright side, bro. This list,” he said with an exaggerated jab of his index finger to the paper,” contains none of those sorts of things. Honestly, did you think Eric ‘I want to be Alton Brown’s BFF’ Bittle would sink so low as to add unitaskers to his registry? Sounds a bit like blasphemy.”

“Right you are, my friend. Right you are,” he said, clapping Holster on the back, and if he squeezed his shoulder a little before pulling away, well that was between Ransom and his right hand. “Besides, I thought the point of wedding registries was to give guests an idea of what the couple might need in their new home. As if Bitty and Jack haven’t already been living together for 2 years and have all this shit already.”

Holster groaned and rolled his eyes. Ever the king of melodrama, that one. Someone remind me why I’m over the moon for this guy again. “Maybe that’s the case for you know, normal people. Clearly, you have never been to a rich Basic White People ™ wedding before. The point is that they already have the useful things. Instead, they fill their lists with overpriced and unnecessary kitchen gadgets or $300 pillow shams because they can. ‘Oh excuse me, Sally, I absolutely need this color coordinated melon baller set. However else will I know that the red one is for watermelon and green for honeydew? A single melon baller will simply not do!’,” he said as he feigned a swoon. “Oh the humanity!”

Ransom awakes to the dulcet tones of a bunch of Swedes begging for a man after midnight. He should have known better than to let Holster choose the ringtone for his incoming calls, but Ransom had frankly expected his boyfriend to choose Adele or the theme song from The Office. Those, he could live with. ABBA? Not so much. Still, he can’t bring himself to change it because he can only get away with it when Holster is gone, and Ransom hates when Holster is gone. Ransom rolls over, groaning and groping blindly for his phone, and promptly falls off the edge of the couch. Serves him right for falling asleep in the middle of Whiskey and Holster’s game, but judging from the talking heads blathering away on the TV screen the Rangers finished playing quite a while ago. ABBA is still singing and their tight harmonies are chipping away at Ransom’s last fuck, and damn it, he was saving that for Holster. He doesn’t think he’ll ever get used to Holster travelling on roadies without him, but that’s what happens when one half of a defense pair signs with an NHL team and the other goes into consulting to save up money for grad school (never mind that Holster’s offered to pay his tuition with his salary; left to his own devices he’ll give most of it to his mom, invest the rest, and use any leftover change to buy a twelve pack of white athletic socks and be perfectly content. At least this way Ransom can take time to figure out exactly what he’d be going to grad school to study because he’s still pretty clueless when it comes to his own future even if he already knows who he’s going to spend it with). But, more importantly, Ransom hopes ABBA finds someone to chase the shadows away because he sure as hell doesn’t have the mental capacity to do much more than lay on the floor. He reaches up, elbow bent awkwardly, as he skims his fingertips along the top of the coffee table in search of his phone. He knocks off an empty cup, a remote that he cannot recognize for the life of him, and toggles an Xbox controller uselessly before he realizes that he’s holding the wrong device, and through it all, gimme gimme gimme repeats incessantly. Just when Ransom’s about to give up, the stress of the week bearing down on him as that stupid song repeats over and over, his hand closes around his phone. He swipes his thumb over the vibrating screen to answer the call, and Holster’s face fills the screen just as he settles back down beneath the coffee table. Holster looks good. A little pixelated from the shitty hotel wifi, but the navy blankets pulled up to his chest make his eyes look so, so blue. His cheeks are still flushed from the game even though he’s probably been out of his uniform for an hour; Ransom’s spent hours pressing kisses to those cheeks just to keep the blush alive. Holster’s not looking at the screen, gaze directed down as he tries to untangle his headphones with one hand, and Ransom watches the muscles shift under his bare skin when he turns his attention back to the phone. His smile grows impossibly wider when he sees Ransom on the other side of the video chat.

August Prompt Free for All, 8/21. Some Zimbits/Holsom OT4 (read this first) for @disney-princess-in-the-making.  Thanks so much, dude, and I hope you’re okay with this rarepair nonsense I’ve made. 

@jack-manpain-zimmermann collab’d with me and did what they do best because we can’t stop won’t stop.

Jack’s eyes have been open for less than three seconds and he’s already annoyed. His pillow is moving, shifting back and forth under his cheek and Jack will not have it. He rolls closer with a little huff, burrowing into the warm pocket he’s found. Bitty shifts behind him, letting out a sleepy protest before nuzzling against Jack’s back. Jack’s pillow lets out a sigh and goes still for a few glorious seconds and Jack’s almost asleep when there’s a vibration beneath his cheek.

“Jack,” Holster whispers. He shifts again and then there’s a hand combing through Jack’s hair, scratching at his scalp gently until he opens his eyes again. Jack raises his head, face falling into a sour expression. Holster’s hair is sticking up in every direction but his eyes are clear and he smiles even though Jack is glaring at him. Ransom’s still asleep on his other side, his face tucked against Holster’s neck. He sniffs in his sleep but is otherwise unbothered by their conversation. Holster’s fingers glide from the crown of Jack’s head to the base of his skull, brushing through the short hair on the back of his neck. “You can go back to sleep in thirty seconds but you have to get off of me. I have to pee and I’m starving.”

Holster’s always hungry the morning after a game, too excited and jumpy with the last dredges of adrenaline coursing through his veins to eat after they’ve finally finished the post-game media circus. Every morning after, without fail, Holster’s stomach is their alarm clock because he always sleeps in the middle when it’s all four of them together. They’re tangled up together now; when Jack shifts his legs under the blankets he can’t tell who he’s bumping up against.

Welcome to OMGCPUMPKINS, a Check, Please! Halloween Fest for content creators of all kinds who want to get creepy up in here.

This is an event that those of us behind OMGCPUMPKINS decided we needed, to mix two of our deepest passions together: irreverent gore, horror, and general spookiness; and cartoon hockey boys.

WHO Everyone is encouraged to get involved! No matter what you make, we want it. This is including but not limited to:

If you make something else, that’s totally cool. Get yourself involved, kiddo. And if you don’t make things at all, that’s totally cool too! We’re doing an open call for prompts, for people who want to get involved but aren’t sure what they want to make. More on that later.

WHAT In terms of what you actually put together, this is pretty much up to you as well. However, just remember - this is a Halloween Fest. The content you put up should follow rough Addam’s Family guidelines: creepy, kooky, mysterious, and spooky. OMGCPUMPKINS is for your goriest gore, your most horrifying horror, and your spookiest spooks.

If you’re not sure where to start, that’s okay! We’re sending out a general request for prompts. The prompts don’t have to be filled - you can take them as suggestions, or guides (or just ignore them altogether if you’ve already got your own idea).

What we’re encouraging, though, is not cute fluffy Halloween costume fics. OMGCPUMPKINS doesn’t want SMH trick or treating, or bobbing for apples, or telling each other silly ghost stories. You can include these things, sure - but they shouldn’t be the focus of what you create. We want you to cut your horror chops in the most disturbing way you can think of. This fest is not for the faint of heart - we’re talking R18+, friends.

WHEN Good news! You can start creating and submitting content now - more details on how are below. The key dates to keep in mind, though, are:

Friday, October 13th is when entries will start being posted

It’s a 19 day fest, which is a weird length, but we can probably all appreciate the Friday 13th serendipity. No entries will be posted until October 13th - if you want to submit before then, feel free, but you won’t see your work on the blog until then. So - how do you submit?

The sign-ups for artists to participate in the Big Bang don’t close until September 15th and we’d love it if a few more signed up. The number of artists is still a bit too low at the moment and it’d be great if it went up!

The fanart for the bang can be the following: a gifset with at least 6 gifs, a fanmix with at least 8 tracks plus a cover, a podfic plus cover art, 2 manips, or 2 art pieces that are more than a sketch.
