this fit goes insane. matching the matte silver of the moroccan style bangles to the body chain and the aluminum crutches is a level of crip drip that didnt actually seem achievable to me prior to this photograph appearing on earth. and of course its a rick fit like that makes sense for this more than any other designer

I owned two different 9-volt battery pocket transistor radios for travel, but my favorite was a desktop Zenith am/fm radio I got for Christmas circa 1966 or 1967 with a "classy" faux woodgrain plastic cabinet.

To serve as visual reference material, Lucas purchased several pieces of space artwork from artist John Berkey, then began drafting his fantasy in earnest. One of Berkey’s illustrations - a rocket-plane diving down from space towards a gigantic metal world - seems to have especially caught and held the director’s eye.“

I quit comics in 1988 and trained as a bus driver mostly as a lark. As a kid, I’d always wanted to drive busses but Mom was having none of that. The online mentions depicted me as a victim down on his luck post-Panther and post-Milestone, which is not at all true. Union bus drivers make great money, for one thing, and for another, I was still writing comics the entire time. In 1990 I took a big pay CUT to take an editorial job at DC, talked into it by DC’s then Director of Development Mike Gold who promised me the DC gig would pay better than the bus job. It didn’t. I actually kept the bus job the entire time I was on staff at DC, typically arriving at DC every day wearing my bus driver uniform. I loved driving buses. I was driving buses, frequently wearing my uniform, while Denys Cowan, Dwayne McDuffie and I were developing the Milestone universe.

"State right for what?" is a good response to Lost Causers claiming the Civil War was about state rights. But it's also important to acknowledge that state rights weren't even a secondary consideration for the slavers. Before seceding, the slave states continuously attacked and tried to undermine the anti-slavery laws in free states.

Just like today, the conservative agenda was always about using whatever power they had to force their regressive bullshit on the whole country.

Same thing happened with reproductive health rights after the overturning of Roe v. Wade. The Republicans immediately started drafting bills for national abortion bans.

In fact starting in the late 1830s and ramping up until the Civil War broke out was organizing in the Free States against what they called "The Slave Power" aka the Slave States being unfairly favored politically due to a few reasons:

the 3/5s clause boosted their numbers in the House unfairly

Slave States constantly wanted federal power used to protect their interests even if it meant quashing Free States'

Slave States also would happily violate the Constitution in support of slavery (mostly the First amendment)

Slave States' Representatives and Senators treated even DISCUSSING the idea of ending slavery (aka something that should be allowed under Congress' Speech and Debate clause) as an affront to their honor that could not be allowed. This led to, among other things, the Gag Rule in the House that automatically tabled all antislavery petitions from constituents (violating their First Amendment rights) for eight years.

So there was a huge political component to fighting slavery in the North--a lot of people became abolitionists not for any moral reasons but essentially because they felt the Slave Power of the South was screwing them and their states over.

This is why sometimes you see things like economic arguments against antiabortion policies, it's essentially saying "ok, you don't care about the women, but will you care about the MONEY?"

Relatedly, this is something that frustrates me about people treating slavery as though it was the one indefensible part of the Civil War, and then, as a result, getting bogged down in a stupid, trollish argument about whether or not the Civil War was really ~about~ slavery, or about something else.

From a certain point of view, maintaining slavery within the South was actually the most defensible part of the Civil War. If you truly believe the abhorrent position that people can be property at all, then yes, it would actually logically follow that you would have a property interest in the kidnapped people who you are enslaving, and yes, if the North had threatened to take huge amounts of your property away by force and without compensation, that might actually be cause for secession.

Except… that’s not what happened. Lincoln’s debates with Douglas weren’t over emancipation; they were over the Kansas-Nebraska Act. William L. Yancey wasn’t just calling for a federal slave code; he was also aggressively campaigning to reopen the African slave trade. The slave owning gentry of the South wasn’t fighting a losing battle against being forced at gunpoint to give up slavery! They were fighting a losing battle against the existence of dozens of things which were making it less and less economical to live a brutally oppressive and morally indefensible slave-master lifestyle: they were scared of free farmers and homesteaders; they were scared of slave states losing relative electoral power; they were scared of tariffs that would advantage any type of farming or industry which wasn’t based on slavery; they were scared by the fact that when Kansas land came on the market for colonizers, the non-slave owning settlers from the North had the audacity (and resources) to scoop any of it up at all.

The Civil War was not about “slavery” as a theoretical, philosophical principle that was in debate. The Civil War caused by a specific slave-owning class, fighting the bloodiest war ever fought on US soil to not lose any of their slavery-based power. Even letting the South keep on having slavery would never have been enough, because anything short of the institution of Southern slavery being hegemonic over the entire continent forever was an existential threat to the lifestyle of the people who actually backed secession.
