Maui is not obese
Maui is a powerful demigod. Big and strong and⊠oh, you think he looks fat?
Thatâs probably because youâve been conditioned by the media to accept this
as what strong and fit looks like. Amiright?
Sadly⊠these guys are not all that strong. Yeah, they got muscles⊠but they arenât built in a useful way. They are built for looks and thatâs about it.
ThisâŠÂ
is a strong guy. Actually a competitor in the Strongman competition. But⊠his tummy sticks out and he doesnât look like a Dorito.Â
You know who else is strong?
These guysâŠ
And MauiâŠ
Look at those arms, omg. And that solid, sturdy torso. You can see a shadow where his meat covers his ribs, but he doesnât look like any slouch to me.
And this guyâŠ
Thatâs Dwayne Johnsonâs grandfather. When the Disney animators showed him their sketches of Maui, he pulled out a picture of his grandfather and showed it to them because he was amazed how similar they looked. This dude was also a pro wrestler.
Thereâs actually a great infographic about ab muscles and stuff over HERE. but this is the part i want to show you.
Now⊠look at Maui again.
That thickness donât move like fat. It doesnât jiggle and heâs able to flex it. Look at how it sits on his body. It doesnât sag⊠he doesnât have a gut. Thereâs even a slight V shape to his torso.
Itâs just big and not âdefinedâ.
And people arenât used to that.
(sorry, this isnât the most organized post⊠i kinda just let it all spill out)

Attention ALL artists!
You sure have seen this post. It has spread like wildfire over the past few days so I doubt there is any artist out there who hasnât seen it. But even if you didnât, you should read on because Iâm about to tell you a handy little thing that can help you to protect your art from such assholes as the anon who submitted this bullcrap, as well as art thieves in general.
The magic word is Metadata.
Metadata is like an invisible signature that is embeded into a file. It can contain all kinds of information, like Title, date, keywords for online seach engines, and copyright information. And the best thing is, since this information is âhiddenâ in the code of your picture, itâs hard to remove it.
There is a nice basic tutorial on how to add Metadata, or âadditional file informationâ to your images in photoshop. Itâs really, really easy so check it out!
âAdding Your Contact And Copyright Info To Your Photos With Photoshopâ on PhotoshopEssentials.com
Iâm not sure if you can do the same with any other art program. If you know how to do this in other programs / can confirm that it works the same way there, please tell me so I can add the information to this post.
Adding the Metadata will not stop idiots from taking and reposting your art. It also wonât make them stop editing out your signature. It WILL however, help you prove that you are the original artist whenever you have to. Always remember my friends. You, the artist, are protected by law. No one has the right to take your intellectual property and hard work and repost, use or edit it without your permission. Ever.
art thief: well how can you prove its yours??
me: /opens metadata
I spread the word as it is important to all artist who ever suffered from art thieving or so.

Hello everyone! I have gotten a bunch of questions about coloring, so here are some things to think about!!! A. One thing I have noticed that helps give your shapes a little pop is to give it super saturated lines where there are plane changes. On ledges and corners, experiment with how saturated your colors are! B/C. If you want to journey into changing your hues as you shade (please do!) think about which direction you are pulling your highlights and shadows in. They should be opposites! Highlights are warm- make your shadows cooler, and vice versa. D. Try to vary your saturation and value! Unless you have specific intent when making everything saturated, it can look very gaudy, and cause all the other colors on your page to loose their vibrancy. Try covering up âDâ on your screen and notice how the other forms on the page become much brighter. E.  What kind of lights are hitting your piece, and how does that change it? Be careful of how it affects your form. Notice how putting these specific colored lights on the form almost make it transparent, making it seem like a different material. F. What material is your object? Does it have dimples, textures, etc? Try to give your forms intentional materials and notice how light reacts to it! More to come!
guys i think we should really talk more about the under-appreciated voltron characters like shay, pidge, hunk and *looks at smudged writing on hand* cornÂ
A couple days ago a friend asked me how to color a character in an environment so I decided to throw together this quick tutorial!
I hope some people find it useful!
TUTORIAL: how to avoid a flat drawing
deppered: yay! could you give a few tips on adding depth to cartoonish faces (like how not to let them come out looking flat)?
DISCLAIMER: i donât consider myself incredibly qualified to answer this- so please keep in mind that this is by no means a complete answer, and you can definitely go a lot more in depth with it! iâll answer to the best of my abilities :>
youâre creating the illusion of depth, so first you need to understand the mechanics of how it works. otherwise youâre just guessing/copying what you see other people do (which isnât something that doesnât WORK but youâll be infinitely better once you understand the fundamentals)
to start off, we need to acknowledge that there are lots of curves and dips to a human face. (take a moment to slowly run your hands over different parts of your face. it sounds stupid but it really helps to take a moment to examine smth closely) to help visualize the curves a drawing would have, iâll use a grid
(hahaHA using lance as an example, what a surprise)
an important part (the most important part??) of creating a convincing drawing is understanding and using shadows. if youâre inexperienced, this is something youâre going to have to look up (or create your own) reference for and study. applying some shadow, you can see that they follow the grid i made
[IMPORTANT: if youâre applying shadows, donât forget about the source of light!! inconsistent lighting leads to messed up drawings]
small details are whatâll really pull your drawing together. consider shadows on things like the teeth/tongue, eyebags, eyelids, EYES, lips, etc
but you donât always need to add shadows/colour to a drawing it make it look believable! a lot of the time iâll add a drop shadow beneath the face because itâs quick, i like how it looks, and itâs already a step towards giving a line drawing a little depth.
also consider using varying angles when you draw a character. front-facing and profile views get very boring very quickly, and are probably easier to go flat with. turning a character to Ÿ, 5/6, whatever fraction u want, thatâll convey a sense of dimension, with or without shadows to help
more examples (u can see that the top two drawings donât feel very flat):
anonymous: do u hav any tips for developing ur art style + actually being able to draw semi-realistically? (like when u can tell where to put shadows and anatomy and stuff like that IM OSRRY I JUST LOVE AND ADMIRE UR ART AND ART STYLE AND UR EFFORT AND ITS JUST ALL SO AMAZING $!!!!)!)!!
WOW iâm glad i caught this ask like.. while making this tutorial LOL thank u anon, for coincidentally asking smth that falls perfectly in line with the nature of this tutorial- iâll continue my answer under the cut

Messy process for that last thing, in case youâre curious.
