President Barack Obama felt a surge of earned media toward the end of his campaign when Donald Trump offered him money to release his college records. News outlets across the country reported on Trump's antics, and Obama used earned media to respond. This video depicts how he made light of the situation on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno.
This issue of The New Yorker hit stands right after President Barack Obama announced his support of gay marriage, which triggered a lot of momentum in his direction from earned media. As many editorial boards ranging from the New York Times to the San Francisco Chronicle endorsed Obama for re-election,The New Yorker endorsed Obama's stance on gay marriage.
This extremely moving picture shows President Barack Obama and New Jersey Republican governor, Chris Christie, shaking hands. When hurricane Sandy hit, Obama responded quickly and responsibly by sending aid to New Jersey. Christie praised Obama for his leadership. Christie and Obama have extremely different political standpoints, but they managed to put it behind them in a time of crisis. What an outstanding bipartisan act this was!
The following video is from the Obama Rally in Las Vegas. Katy Perry sings is her heart out in a dress made to look like an election ballot, with Obama's box shaded in. Obama followed Perry with a short speech, thanking her for her performance and all of the fans for their support. This is a prime example of Obama using an international and well-respected star to gain votes.
In this 30 second spot ad, the Obama team multiplied the effect Romney's statement. The ad is simple and lets Romney's monologue become the central focus. More importantly, it visually represents his words with black and white images of ordinary Americans.
The ad is chilling, but shows how powerful simplicity can be and is clearly effective for the Obama communication strategy.

Welcome to See How They Run, a blog created by Fernanda Zamudio-Suarez, Andrea Gallo, and Dora Pereli, all students of Bob Mann at the Louisiana State University. In Bob's class we watched, discussed, and debated all elements of the 2012 presidential election.
