I’ve read that Agatha said she loved being married to an archaeologist because the older she got, the more interesting he found her. And I think that is one of the best quotes about love that I have ever heard.
Since I've just finished Agatha Christie's autobiography I thought I'd correct the original tweets -
People didn't tell her to "marry that boy". Quite the opposite. They thought the idea was insane. When Christie took him to visit her sister she actively tried to prevent the marriage and burst into tears once she realised that her efforts were for naught. The only people who approved were her daughter (who liked him partly because the dog liked him), her mother (whom she suspected didn't actually like it at all and was just being diplomatic) and one of the domestic staff (who's, you know, on her payroll).
Fortunately for Max Agatha Christie was the kind of person who, if you told her to do something, would go and do the opposite out of sheer spite so she married him in the end.
(No, really, she was just Like That. Her daughter Rosalind was very similar in that she was a contrarian as well. Christie weaponised this for motivational purposes - whenever she was having trouble doing something she'd tell her daughter she wanted to do it. Her daughter would immediately tell her not to do it, this is a terrible idea etc, which would always have the desired effect of pissing Christie off into making her do the thing out of spite. Christie was quite pleased at this strategy but I'm sure this drove her daughter absolutely insane.)
