A: There are a few omissions: I found there were too many lake monsters so those I didn't exhaustively include. Wikipedia has a lot more information about Greek individual figures than individual figures from other cultures (like Achilles or Glauce or Dioxippe or Ajax) and when those figures are members of a mythic group (amazons, nymphs, etc.) I included them in this list, but the list may skew in favour of Greek mythic women with fewer male figures. Also I have included some gods, goddesses and non-binary deities but just like with the lake monsters, did not include most of the Wiki pages on godheads of the world. But the list should be fairly exhaustive when it comes to heavenly beings (elves of alfheim, gandharvas, horae and so on) who serve the gods in their divine abodes.

A: Well technically there are lists of creatures from folklore and one of those lists, which Tolkien came across, lists hobbits. It doesn't explain what hobbits are and they aren't documented anywhere else, but that may be the origin of the word hobbit.

A: folktales that make mention of unique mythic creatures have been included. For example "The Red Ettin" is a English folktale that features herds of two-headed bulls and cows. In other cases, Wikipedia has pages like "Aboriginal Australian Creatures" or "Abenaki & Mi'kmaq beings" which are worth looking at because they provide more mythic creatures that don't have individual pages.

A: one of the terms is the singular and the other the plural. The list is a bit peculiar, sorry.
Q: How would you recommend this list is used?
A: You can use it any way you like, just keep in mind that some beings on this list are sacred and ideally try to be culturally sensitive about that. For example, some Ojibwe people are not exactly happy that one of their unnameable spirits has been publicly named, misspelled, attached to anti-Native stereotypes (see also here) and then completely misrepresented and trivialized as a horror monster in pop culture and so the "wendigo" comes with all that baggage, as do many other creatures on this list.
Usually if a creature is from a Neolithic / Bronze Age / Iron Age culture like Egypt or North & South Mesopotamia (Akkadian, Assyrian & Sumerian, Babylonian) there is no one who is going to raise valid ethical concerns around the use of your creature.
Similarly, if something is a generic fantasyland creature (elf, dwarf, dragon, ghost, giant, mermaid etc.) or from Greek and Roman sources (sirens, minotaurs, catoblepas) or medieval bestiaries (hydrus, iaculus) you can flesh those out with more research, but I don't think you will run into ethical problems.
But with a lot of other creatures, outreach to that community has value, because otherwise its not just a fantasy work being authored, but also some serious inter-cultural tensions. Stephenie Meyer, who decided to add Qileute shapeshifters into Twilight but never consulted Qileute and doesn't support their community in any way, is a example. There is no need to follow it.

there's an old anne rice interview circulating on twitter rn that i remember reading ages ago where she makes a pretty salient point about how submissive men who have bdsm fantasies etc will go to a sex worker and basically order the ala carte version of their fantasy to be performed in real life but women don't really have that same option and certainly not at the same point of availability so they read her horny books instead. and honestly that argument has been in the back of my mind every time people get on their high horses about the popularity of booktok romantasy novels or heated rivalry or whatever the "women are horny and we're upset about that" cultural property du jour is ever since. women, especially straight women, have so few outlets for their sexual desires, especially if they have a partner who doesn't share them, and i will never understand why "someone ELSE'S private sexual fantasy makes me uncomfortable and therefore they should not be allowed to engage with it, even if i am in no way being affected by it or even aware of it at all" is such a popular party line among allegedly progressive young people.

The way the Ursula K. Le Guin quote where she talks about the first Harry Potter book is used is a bit disingenuous because she is talking about the literary quality of the book and like that's not what the "Rowling really fucking hates and slanders trannies"-discourse is about. People are acting like she called Rowling herself "ethically mean-spirited" when she did not and it actually doesn't matter whether the books are in fact actually evil or just trash or widely acknowledged masterpieces because it doesn't change anything about what Rowling does.
But apart from that it annoys me because the people sharing that quote don't care about the quality of the books, they only care to reframe the books as a symptom of the author's decrepit morals which is fair insofar as a lot of an authors social and ideological hangups shine through in their writing (some authors are even said to try to mediate, reflect and transform their hangups through writing, the monsters) but it's also unfair in that it completely ignores what Le Guin was actually saying and in that it is actually worthwhile to try to process HP as a book series and a phenomenon.
Because Le Guin is right. I used to really like Harry Potter - when I was a kid - and now I can't fucking hear about it anymore, but it really is "good fare for it's age group, but stylistically ordinary, imaginary derivative, and ethically rather mean-spirited". Le Guin is talking only about the first book here, where the age-group is 11 year olds, and what she is saying is it's an okay children's book, nothing special, pretty judgy. Harsh for a die-hard fan to hear maybe, but hardly the revolutionary takedown people make it out to be.
But I think it holds true for the book series as a whole. Like I said, I think it's disingenuous to portray the books as uniquely evil when what they really are is exactly what people expect and want from YA books: lots of characters they can relate to, a seemingly big world they can imagine living in and a nice, inoffensive, boring sentiment like "love is the strongest magic" or whatever.
If you were to read the books to find out about the authors political and social opinions, you would expect her to become famous for being very racist and classist, with the role the centaurs, house elfs and gnomes play in the story. Trans-what? Anyway, none of that really stands out in a late 90s, early 00s kids / YA books. And it has all those things the YA audience (which of course includes much more people than just those in their late late teens) desperately craves, even if it is nothing special ("imaginary derivative" would be a baffling criticism to levy against a YA book btw but it does make sense in context where Le Guin talks specifically about how much it annoys her that apparently none of the reviewers at the time have ever read another kids fantasy book).
And here my well trained distrust comes into play. Because I have seen so many tweets and hour length youtube videos about this (okay only like two videos but still) that I don't think it's about Rowling spreading hate speech anymore. But it's also not cancel culture, because people are already trying to cancel Rowling, and they should continue to do so, but what you aren't explaining when you're talking about how uniquely awful the Harry Potter books are, is why and how Rowlings statements may classify as hate speech.

Let me be the asshole here and say that what I think is happening is that people are using justified moral outrage to portray the Harry Potter books, that have, in retrospect, turned out to be completely ordinary, maybe even boring books, as uniquely awful - because if the Harry Potter books are uniquely awful then the books that they are reading now for much the same reason they used to read Harry Potter in the olden days must be better and more worthy of attention and respect then Harry Potter. Surely, when the world building is better, the plot makes more sense and the Hero is more complicated/principled/relatable the book is playing in a completely different league, even if what I want from it is to be just as invested in these new worlds and their characters as back then.

Ten years ago, any symmetrical system whatsoever which gave the appearance of order - dialectical materialism, anti-Semitism, Nazism - was enough to fascinate men. Why not fall under the spell of Tlön and submit to the minute and vast evidence of an ordered planet? Useless to reply that reality, too, is ordered. It may be so, but in accordance with divine laws - I translate: inhuman laws - which we will never completely perceive. Tlön may be a labyrinth, but it is a labyrinth plotted by men, a labyrinth destined to be deciphered by men.
Contact with Tlön and the ways of Tlön have disintegrated this world. Captivated by its discipline, humanity forgets and goes on forgetting that it is the discipline of chess players, not of angels. So a few months ago there was the discourse about would you rather meet a man or a bear in the woods. I didn't want to touch it while the discourse was hot and everyone dug in hard because those are not good conditions for nuance, but I waited until today, June 1st, for a specific reason.
I'm not going to take a position in the bear vs man debate because I don't think it matters. What is really being asked here is how afraid are you of men? Specifically, unexpected men who are, perhaps, strange.
People have a lot of very real fear of men that comes from a lot of very real places. Back when I was first transitioning in 2015 and 2016, I decided to start presenting as a woman in public even though I did not pass in the slightest.
I live in a red state. I knew other trans women who had been attacked by men, raped by men. I knew I was taking a risk by putting myself out there. I was the only visibly trans person in the area of campus I frequented, and people made sure I never forgot that. Most were harmless enough and the worst I got from them was curious stares. Others were more aggressive, even the occasional threat. I had to avoid public bathrooms, of course, and always be aware of my surroundings.
I know how frightening it is to be alone at night while a pair of men are following behind you and not knowing if they are just going in the same direction or if they want to start something - made all the worse for the constant low level threat I had been living under for over a year by just being visibly trans in a place where many are openly hostile to queer people. You have to remember, this was at the height of the first wave of bathroom law discussions, a lot of people were very angry about trans women in particular. My daily life was terrifying at times. I was never the subject of direct violence, but I knew trans women who had been.
I want you to keep all that in mind.
So man or bear is really the question "how afraid of men are you?", and the question that logically follows is "What if there was a strange man at night in a deserted parking lot?" or "What if you were alone in an elevator with a man?" or "What if you met a strange man in the woman's bathroom?"
My state recently passed an anti trans bathroom bill. The rhetoric they used was about protecting women and children from "strange men", aka trans women.
Conservatives hijack fear for their bigoted agenda.
When I first started presenting as a woman the campus apartment complex was designed for young families. The buildings were in a large square with playgrounds in the center, and there were often children playing. I quickly noticed that when I took my daughter out to play, often several children would immediately stop what they were doing and run back inside. It didn't take me long to confirm that the parents were so afraid of "the strange man who wears skirts" that their children were under strict instructions to literally run away as soon as they saw me.
"How afraid are you of a strange man being near your children?"
I mentioned above that I had to avoid public bathrooms. This was not because of men. It was because of women who were so afraid of random men that they might get violent or call someone like the police to be violent for them if I ever accidentally presented myself in a way that could be interpreted as threatening, when my mere presence could be seen as a threat. If I was in the library studying and I realized that it was just me and one other woman I would get up and leave because she might decide that stranger danger was happening.
Your fear is real. Your fear might even come from lived experiences. None of that prevents the fact that your fear can be violent. Women's fear of men is one of the driving forces of transmisogyny because it is so easy to hijack. And it isn't just trans women. Other trans people experience this, and other queer people too. Racial minorities, homeless people, neurodivergent people, disabled people.
When you uncritically engage with questions like man or bear, when you uncritically validate a culture of reactive fear, you are paving the way for conservatives and bigots to push their agenda. And that is why I waited until pride month. You cannot engage and contribute to the culture of reactive fear without contributing to queerphobia of all varieties. The sensationalist culture of reactive fear is a serious queer issue, and everyone just forgot that for a week as they argued over man or bear. I'm not saying that "man" is the right answer. I am saying that uncritically engaging with such obvious click bait trading on reactive fear is a problem. Everyone fucked up.
It is not a moral failing to experience fear, but it is a moral responsibility to keep a handle on that fear and know how it might harm others.
The terfs are big mad about this post. Normally wouldn't acknowledge it, but one of them said something interesting. Basically, they said that this was denying women their "survival instincts", which I find a very interesting way to put it because survival instincts are about action, not just the feeling of fear.
I want to highlight the core principles of what I actually said:
"Your fear is real. Your fear might even come from lived experiences. None of that prevents the fact that your fear can be violent."
"It is not a moral failing to experience fear, but it is a moral responsibility to keep a handle on that fear and know how it might harm others."
That is the core. That is what any decent person should agree to and keep in mind. I never said you should not act on your survival instincts. I actually listed a couple ways I did myself, such as avoiding bathrooms and removing myself from situations where others might perceive me as a threat.
This isn't just a trans woman issue, as I said in the post proper. I came at it from that angle because that is my experience, but this is an issue for a number of groups, practically every marginalized group that exists. The one I had in mind and that has been mentioned several times in the notes of this post is how white women's fear has been weaponized against black men. Really all black people, but since we are talking about fear of men specifically, I'm going to look at it from that angle.
Even if you hate trans women, even if somehow that were the correct position, the two core points still stand. Your fear can be violent, and you have a moral responsibility to be cognizant of that fact. How could your unchecked "survival instincts" hurt a black man? If you are not asking yourself this question then there is a problem.
But radical feminsists are offended by the idea that a woman has a responsibility to not cause harm with their unchecked survival instincts. This is one of the major reasons the original radical feminist movements were so incredibly racist. Sharing a space with a brown woman made them afraid. Kicking out all the brown women was in accordance with their survival instincts.
Now more recent rad fems will claim racial inclusivity and I am sure they believe it, but they still object to the idea that their fear can be harmful and refuse to take responsibility for their actions. That is a racist position because it will cause harm.
I know this is not exactly a revelation, but it is rare to see it so cleanly demonstrated.
