So i’m watching the Beacons of Minas Tirith scene, and i’ve been wondering, what happens if Denethor and Theoden light their beacons at the same time? Wouldn’t the people lighting the beacons just stop in the middle because they have the signal coming in both directions? I think they would get stuck because if you have beacons being lit coming towards you, they can’t be lit going back to send the message to where they’re coming from because those beacons are already lit. Let me try and visualise it:

One person in the middle would see the beacon coming from Gondor and would be like “hey, we have to light the beacon so the rest of the beacons will light on the way to Rohan” and the other person would see the beacon coming from Rohan and be like “hey, we have to light the beacon so the rest of the beacons will light on the way to Gondor” but then they both get confused because beacons on both sides are lit, so no signal will go through at all, because if they light their beacon, nothing is going to happen. And the people of Gondor would not act because they dont know a signal is coming back to them, and the people of Rohan also wouldn’t act because they also don’t know that a signal is coming back. They wouldn’t be able to see the beacons being lit in their direction because they can only see the beacon closest to theirs, which would already be lit to send their message away. It would look like this:

Now i see why there’s some tensions between Gondor and Rohan. They don’t exactly have the best communication system. Don’t get me wrong, it’s cool as hell, but it’s not flawproof.

the thing w there being potatoes in lord of the things is that there ARE actually at least 2 built in explanations for it:

1: they don't have potatoes; the references to potatoes in the Shire were added by Tolkien-the-translator as part of a wider localisation. when Sam mentions potatoes he's actually talking about some other vegetable

2: given that Middle Earth was historically ruled over by the Numenoreans who come from a lost kingdom on the other side of the western ocean, it could be that Numenor was in or had contact with ancient America and brought potatoes back with them

2 is kind of a stretch tho interesting to contemplate; 1 however on some level i think is the correct answer. the Shire's resemblance to England is 100% canonically a localisation thing. The Shire is England bcos it's the main characters' home and the intended audience of the book was English people.

the decision to incorporate post-colombian exchange plants like potatoes and tobacco isn't innocuous but it was a purposeful decision with reasoning behind it beyond 'they have potatoes because I said so'.
