Michael was a big fan of Musical Theatre and The Phantom of the Opera was his favourite production, which he visited many times. For a long time Michael and Andrew Lloyd Webber discussed the possibility of Michael performing the role in either the stage production or the movie version.
The story of a musical genius being on display since childhood and judged by society for his appearance was close to his heart and at one point he was even rumoured to be working on his own, brand new, version of the story that was closer to the original novel.
Andrew Lloyd Webber has often talked about the times he spent discussing music and theatre as well as various projects with Michael.
