charlotte supporters, sympathisers, and apologists, it is time for us to discuss how irksome cleo's behaviour is in 2x10 'missed the boat.' yes charlotte is likely over-working cleo as her tutor in order to keep her away from lewis, and goes about this in a sneaky way. how and ever cleo is bitching and moaning the entire time over spending one (1) weekend studying after she's given the opportunity to do a make-up test. then there's the 'following charlotte and lewis out to mako' of it all, which ends up with cleo nearly exposing her mermaid-ness and lewis having to step in to save her. not to mention cleo gets her best result ever in the make-up exam and doesn't even thank charlotte until she asks her to!!!! cleo sertori i love you with all my heart but sometimes you make it hard 😕
while we're discussing this ep, what kind of high school sciene exam has an essay question for which you are expected to write 3000 words at the end? THREE THOUSAND WORDS ON A TIME CRUNCH AT AGE SIXTEEN?? not even for english, but science. how much time is allotted for the essay portion? no wonder charlotte said she'd have to study all weekend to pass.
more on topic now. people will hate on charlotte for this, but in season 3, when cleo has scheduled study time to the minute and expects her friends to follow suit, it's understandable and endearing. i do find it understandable and endearing, but when charlotte tells her she needs to study to pass, cleo feels she's asking too much of her. when bella and rikki go for a swim, even though they say they're doing it to be relaxed for the exam, cleo insists they need to be studying, and she's not even their tutor. also cleo doesn't wanna study because she'd "like to have some sort of life," but rikki doesn't study because she's trying to figure out the mysterious water tentacle. the latter feels a little more understandable to me, but no one hates on cleo for insisting studying is more important.
I am not a Charlotte supporter but I am a Cleo realist, in the fact that a lot of Cleo’s behavior in season 2 was simply ridiculous and should’ve been treated as such by her friends and family. Cleo needed a reality check for sure, but then Charlotte took it way too far by the end of the season. It’s great watching as an adult and realizing that shows have nuance(!!!) and that many things can be true at the same time
After rewatching the series multiple times, I think that both Cleo and Charlotte had their own specific issues.
We already know Cleo is the more timid and introverted one and she also seems conflict avoidant or a mediator type (seen in the episode of their 1 year anniversary). In season 2 she gets new powers, her parents are divorced, she's a mermaid going to high school, that is a lot to juggle with for a teenager.
I think she regrets breaking up with Lewis because despite him being suffocating with all the help sometimes, he actually helped her throughout her journey, even if it was just by being there. It makes sense why she gets paranoid or jealous of Charlotte (in a way).
Now Charlotte. She probably got a crush on Lewis since the first time she saw him because she was smiling after she meet Cleo and him. She would have tried to maybe get close to him, but she was extremely possessive and just as paranoid as Cleo since she was stealing his phone, telling him not to spend time with Cleo or the others, and lying about being told she's excluded from the ' mermaid club'
If I'm judging correctly, Charlotte might have abandonment issues (or she always felt invisible) and Cleo perhaps self esteem issues and maybe some anxiety? She was a lot different in season one, but seemed to grow and challenge herself a bit and try new things, which I liked.
I am a very Cleo coded person so maybe I just have a soft spot for her and her character's snuggle & growth. But I loved that in the end Charlotte didn't become bitter, her character came to terms with the fact she was no longer a mermaid.
