the thing is that for all its supposed faults, i would take this brand of 90s utopian globalism over whatever the fuck we’ve been doing for the last 10 years in a heartbeat
When I was in grade school, in 4-5th grade social studies we did SO MUCH about countries of the world. We did presentations where every student had a country, and you had to watch attentively to your peers’ so you learned about other countries. We did portfolios about the continents, learned about map projections and the like.
I now have a PhD in international relations. The college students I teach often struggle with the type of intuition that us in the Y2K generation got in spades.
There’s been a backlash against “globalization” in the last couple of decades. In terms of economic policy, there is a whole ton of reason for this. But the *cultural* enthusiasm for embracing all of humanity has gone with it, and I really worry about USAmerican’s cultural knowledge. So much of this has been replaced by STEM (lol), and I think it is little wonder why our country’s leaders increasingly act like the rest of the world doesn’t exist.
I dont think the cultural globalisation aspect is in any way separate from the economic side tbh. Like theres a long story to write here about it. But essentially speaking the rest of the world, especially the global south consumed a lot more of american culture than america did of theirs. Making america a cultural hegemon that is current in all countries. Meaning now the global culture is american culture. Meaning there is less of a need to create cultural products geared at the rest of the world for things to be consumable. So they arent created. And up to date america continues to be the cultural hegemon.
This is all because the primary purpose of globalisation is labour and resource extraction and cultural globalisation manufactures consent for it. You grow up talking about the american dream and they joys of capitalism and how you can get coca cola in the most remote regions of the world even when infrastructure and public services are unavailable. And you learn to celebrate it as a clear example of the benefits and success of capitalism. Your entire legal framework is shaped to serve these things. Your job market and economy are shaped to serve these things. You believe this wealth is acquired through hard work and not exploitation. You get exploited for your hard work. America becomes richer. You get disabled due to lack of social protection and labour protection. Your government becomes the problem. This shows up in global reports and development indexes. There is no longer reason for you to have any pride in your culture because you come from a backwards regressive country. Oh you wish you were american instead so you consume more america become more america work harder get more disabled. Raise your children to think they are special and worthy and smarter and more hardworking than anyone else bc they arent held back by their backwards lazy and corrupt culture. And they either continue working hard and being exploited or thanks to your hard work they get a cushy development job that has as a purpose to show how your government is lazy and corrupt. Or get a political economic or legal career that shapes your countries economy, laws and policies to the benefit of the extractive entity that is imperialism.
And now we have fascism rising worldwide.
Unfortunately as nostalgic as you may be of globalisation, it was in whole a big part of the reason why we are here.
