On that note, this is Finnery!! (the name is a reference to an old D&D character “Finley”)
They’re a former Loth-Sworn, now Seldarine Drow. They grew up in the poorer area of Menzoberranzan, under a lot of pressure from their parents to go through the Test of Darkness to prove themself to Lolth, which would then put their family among the elite of Menzoberranzan. Having no desire to disappoint their parents, Finnery took every opportunity they had to demonstrate their ambition and eventually become a Zwy’il, beginning their journey through the Punishments of Lolth (stuff in depth abt that here)
Finnery got through the Test of Darkness easily enough, as being a Zwy’il when constantly surrounded by lower-class drow gave them the sense of superiority they needed to pass.
After passing the Test of Darkness, Finnery met another Zwy’il, Min. The two became fast friends, both being from the lower echelons of drow society. Min was older than Finnery, and had already passed the test which was next for Finnery, the Test of Ambition. Min was yet to begin the Test of the Drider.
Finnery passed the Test of Ambition with about as much ease as the Test of Darkness, but unknowingly made a general angry, and soon had assassins coming after them.
This put Finnery very on edge, so much so that the Test of the Drider quickly became overwhelming for them. Min was struggling with the same test as well, and brought up the idea of some… otherworldly help. Finnery was hesitant at first, as getting help from any other god is taboo, and any drow would kill them for it. Min swore she wouldn’t tell anyone, and that she was sure whoever they went to for help would be subtle enough for them to get away with it.
After talking it over with Min several times, Finnery contacted and made a pact with The Great Old One. In exchange for the power to help both themself and Min through these trials, they gave up 300 years off their lifespan.
After the pact was made, Finnery and Min passed through the rest of the trials with ease. But the rewards of that were not enough for Min. She didn’t want to be among the top of society, she wanted to be the top of society. So Min outed Finnery for cheating with a warlock pact.
Suddenly no longer being welcome in the underdark, Finnery fled to the surface. For a few years, they did their best to survive in the wild, as they still had the power grated to them from their patron to aid them. Eventually, they came upon a small settlement of Seldarine Drow, who took them in, albeit warily.
Despite the fact that Finnery stayed in the Seldarine settlement for many years, they were never fully trusted. As they spent more years on the surface, their eyes started to change to a more brownish red, so members of the settlement demanded they dye pieces of their hair red and wear red earrings so everyone would know their origin as lolth-sworn.
After 20 years of this treatment, Finnery grew sick of it and started to wander Faerûn once more. Not too long after, they were abducted by the mind flayers and taken aboard the nautiloid.
Their journey through the first two acts has mostly been them learning to trust and love again, while teaching some of their companions the same thing. After killing Ketheric Thorm and making their way towards Baldur’s Gate, Finerry decided to symbolically ’start fresh,’ dying the red in their hair purple and swapping out their red earrings for silver (and gave themself a few more piercings that totally got infected and shadowheart totally fussed over them because she’s their girlfriend and she’s not a fan of Finnerys lack of self preservation)
so uh tldr lolth is a bitch, min is a manipulative bitch, and shadowheart and finnery have been helping each other heal <3
