Another thing with the fireflies jumping to removing Ellie's brain
She DROWNS in the game. Fully unconscious, Joel was doing CPR DROWNED. And clearly they got her back and she was fine, but there's a non zero chance that she could have gotten brain damage to the point that they COULDN'T have gotten her back. They're not a fully stocked hospital- it's a research facility.
It's not something that was considered in the game or even present in the show, but like. It COULD have been
Man that would have been a kickass cold open for introducing Abby.
All the fireflies hanging out, gossiping about Joel and just in general celebrating because they're finally going to be able to make a cure. Abby and Owen leaving the party because for one they're like 19/23 and don't give a shit, but also because Abby knows the actual cost the cure will have. (Revealed later)
Then there's gunshots in the building. Abby isn't a weapon yet. Owen doesn't let her go in. She waits until everything goes quiet before going to find out what happens, leading to the scene in the game where Owen tries to keep her from going in the operating room.
THEN we go back to Joel and Ellie in Jackson and start the show. None of the bullshit exposition dumping becasue god forbid you write a story that can hold your audiences attention long enough for them to wait to get all the pieces.
As annoyed as I am by... basically everything in TLOU season 2, I think I'm more annoyed by the continued fandom reaction toward Abby's description of Joel.
She never saw him*. There were only a handful of people who saw him at all, and only three** of those survived. I highly doubt the two nurses were going around describing him as handsome. Not after witnessing him shoot Jerry in the head without even LOOKING. So where did it come from? CLEARLY Abby just made it up herself, right??? CLEARLY this is just some weird age gap fantasy stuck in by the writers, right????
Use your brains, I beg.
Joel was unconscious- if not straight up sedated -for who knows how long. Long enough for Jerry to do MRI scans and numerous lab tests on Ellie's blood and cerebrospinal fluid. Long enough for people to look in and see what giant of a man was able to transport the cure all the way across the country to them.
Long enough for rumors to start spreading across a small group of people who- let's be real -had likely already run through all available and interested partners. But now here's this new guy. He's handsome. He's gray and mysterious and probably desperate for adult company after traveling with a teenager for months. He's Pedro fucking Pascal, of course the only thing the fireflies are talking about is how handsome he is. Hell, they probably had Marlene talking him up for months, trying to give everyone a clear picture of who they were looking for. And then there he is, and damn, she wasn't wrong.
But then he gets a gun in his hands. He executes everyone in his path, including the people who were just lusting over him. Including Abby's father. Including Marlene. He disappears with the only hope for humanity.
And people were just calling him handsome.
It's no wonder that stuck in her mind for five years.
*allegedly, it's still unconfirmed if she was the one running away at the hospital, although the podcast said it wasn't her.
**even if the person running away WAS Abby, she still wouldn't have seen him. So it was really just the nurses, and they wouldn't have time to notice the scar on his head.
A large problem with the stranger things fandom and how they interpret characters/storylines/behaviors is that people cant seem to separate personal opinions and canon.
Just because you personally believe that calling El Jane is the moral thing to do doesnt mean thats what happened in the show. Your opinions on how people should be treated after trauma are completely irrelevant. Her name is El because everyone else called her that and she introduced herself as such.
It simply doesnt matter that you believe she should be called Jane because it "humanizes" her more.
Just like how it doesnt matter that you think El shouldn't have been in a relationship with Mike because of her trauma and upbringing. The show expresses that she loves Mike and understands that love as romantic so you believing that she doesnt understand romance is irrelevant when the show, shows that she does.
Mike never had internalized homophobia, viewing his character through that lens and using that to justify/explains his actions makes no sense. Everything he does/says is always explicitly explained, there's no reason to claim hes lying when hes not. The show tells us hes not. Getting upset when people dont agree is just annoying when thats literally never been true.
It also doesnt matter that you think Will wouldnt be in a bar at the end of the show because he had an alcoholic father. Just because thats not how other people would react doesnt mean thats ever been something that bothers will. Canonically hes never expressed issues with alcohol so being upset he went to a bar mischarcterizes him more than him actually being in the bar.
Simply put your personal opinions on how people/characters should react to trauma is irrelevant when the show expresses something different. They are not real people.
I hate how the counter response to 'Erica should have been the one taken by Mr. Whatsit' somehow turned into 'well you're just rascist and think the sassy black girl should be immune to manipulation'
Erica, AS WRITTEN, would have never fallen for Venca's Mr. Whatsit persona AS WRITTEN. To say otherwise would be a complete misunderstanding of her character. ESPECIALLY considering she was part of the Season 4 events and already knew about him.
Could the storyline been changed to something that WOULD have lead to her being the one taken into the mindscape? Absolutely, if they'd thought about using her instead of making Holly a new character. There's plenty of ways it COULD have been done. But holy Jesus fuck, it's not rascist to acknowledge that she couldn't have seamlessly replaced Holly in the existing plotline.
The funniest part about watching fandom treat a four year age gap like it's an absolutely crime against humanity
Is the knowledge that my partner was committing grand theft auto and then thrown in jail the year I was BORN
Like four years is NOTHING that's the most normal age gap in the history of age gaps to the point that once both parties have reached 16 it shouldn't even COUNT AS AN AGE GAP
