You were a role model for students. Always smiling at teachers, always had an extra pen on her just in case, handed out cupcakes every week, and had someone to sit with at lunch everyday. Teachers loved you, and you never got in trouble.
That until last Friday, in the middle of PE class, when you accidentally hit the new gym teacher right in the face with a basketball, breaking her nose in the process. You tried to explain that you didn't know how to play basketball, that you were terribly sorry, and that it would never happen again, but to no avail. The damage was done, and the consequences had to be faced; 7 days of detention. Monday to sunday.
I. On the first day, you found out that your detention partner was Martin Edwards. You knew his name, but you didn’t expect him out of all people to get detention. He was a nerd, always reading, always quiet. You had never talked to him, and you hoped things would change.
He was now reading some science book, leaned back in his chair in the back of the class.
“What are you reading?” you asked, hoping to make conversation.
“A book.” he said flatly, not looking at you.
“Is that a book or a cardio exercise? How many pages does it have?” you teased.
He ignored you, but you saw the smirk pulling at his lips.
II. The next day, you were already seeing progress.
“Hello!" you said smiling, shutting the door behind you.
“Hi." he responds, looking at you briefly before continuing to do his homework.
You sit down next to him.
“What’s this?” You point to his open notebook.
“Biology homework.” He muttered under his breath.
“Ah, must be a piece of cake for you, no? I really like biology, its the only subject i’m great at. I dont even try for other subjects.”
“Its the only subject i pretty much suck at.” Martin murmured.
“Huh? But how, you’re the top student, always studying and reading..”
He sighs as you pull the notebook closer to you.
“Genetics? Alright, pay attention to me.”
You explained the subject to him as simple as you could, while he nodded and listened carefully.
III. On the third day, you walked in with your usual bright energy and a pink box of cupcakes. Normally, the box would’ve been empty at this time, but you made just enough so you could share with your detention partner.
“Do you eat cupcakes, or did you read some article online that made you think one cupcake guarantees a tragic death?” You teased, opening the box slowly as he watched you with one eyebrow raised.
“I’m not that much of a nerd.” He muttered, a smile tugging his lips.
“So, chocolate or vanilla?”
He took the vanilla cupcake.
“Why do you bring cupcakes weekly?” He asked as he bit into it.
“Well it first started when I used to help my mom make cupcakes for events at work as a kid, and we always made too many. I was always bringing cupcakes to school.” you explained. “But then I realized it makes people smile and look forward to school sometimes, so I kept the tradition.”
“That’s… thoughtful.” He whispered.
You both stayed quiet for a very long 30 seconds just looking each other in the eyes.
He coughs awkwardly. “Anyway, I should finish my science book.” He said, pulling the book out.
You let out a breath you didn't know you were holding, feeling heat rising to your cheeks. “Yeah..”
15 minutes later, in the middle of reading a line, he felt something weighing down his shoulder. He didn’t expect to see you sleeping peacefully. He took his hoodie that he hung on the chair and draped it over you, careful to not wake you up, ignoring his racing heart.
You stirred awake, blinking at the dim light of the room. Something warm, that smelled like a unfamiliar perfume rested over your frame. Looking down, you realized it was his hoodie. You've been sleeping with your head on his shoulder for God knows how long. You feel yourself turning into a blushing mess.
He glanced up from his book, letting out a faint chuckle. "You fell asleep," He murmured.
"Im sorry.. Thank you."
He shrugged, watching you with soft eyes. "Dont apologize. Didn't want you to get cold."
You smiled, cheeks warming, "You're nicer than you pretend to be."
He looked back at his book, smirking. "Don't get too used to it."
"I'll try."
IV. The next day, it was raining heavily. You came in detention earlier than usual, sitting alone while scrolling on your phone mindlessly. Martin walks in, looking put together like always despite basically walking through a storm.
'Hey. No cupcakes today?" he asked smiling, ruffling your hair softly as he took off his wet jacket.
"Ugh, your hands are cold. And i bring cupcakes only once a week." you muttered, blushing.
"They were good though, gotta give you that." he opened his chemistry notebook while saying something about homework under his breath.
"I know."
20 minutes later, you were extremely bored as you watched Martin write chemistry equations down. His eyebrows were furrowed, nose slightly scrunched and leg bouncing.
"You know," you started, "You never told me why you got into detention in the first place. You don't look like the type to get in trouble often."
"You dont look like the type to get in 7-day detention either, but look where we are." he joked, setting his pen down, leaning back in his chair and stretching his arms behind him.
Your eyes flickered to his flexed biceps and back to his eyes. He smirked, but didn't mention it. You sigh. "I accidentally broke the new gym's teacher nose with a basketball."
He bursts out laughing, clutching his stomach for support. "There's no way, You were the one that did it? I thought it was some random stoner kid."
"No, it was me! And i tried to apologize too, but she was soo mad." You detailed, laughing along with him. "I'm just a girl, what would i know about dribbling and balling? But she still demanded detention. But anyways, what about you?"
He drew a long breath. "I got into a fight with a dude for bullying my older sister. I also broke his nose."
"Oh. Atleast we have something in common, right?" you bumped his shoulder with yours, smiling.
"Yeah. Yeah, we do." he laughed.
Hours passed, fading into the background of your continuously flowing conversation with Martin. He was always listening and knew when was the right time to lighten the mood with some jokes. You found out that besides being surprisingly educated on random subjects like chemistry, he also had a rich knowledge in producing music, dancing, singing and fashion. He showed you a few of his beats, and you were amazed to say the least.
He offered to walk home with you to share a umbrella, since yours was stolen at the grocery store.
"I really like being around you." you randomly confessed, looking at your feet.
He was taken aback by your sudden honesty. "I like being around you too, you understand me and you make school more enjoyable." He said, smiling down at you, the height difference now visible.
When you arrived home, you guys texted all night.
V. You noticed the energy shift the next day. Awkward silence was now replaced by a comfortable one, conversations never felt forced, and inside jokes appeared between you two. You both chose to ignore the feeling that was growing at light speed, even though it was mutual. Martin was always catching himself looking at your lips while you were talking, and you were always smiling at him when he went on nerdy rants about stuff you didn't even understand.
You were now explaining a biology lesson to him, when you realized that he wasn't even listening. He was just staring at you the whole time, nodding and smiling.
"You're a smart girl."
"I- You- What?" you stuttered uncontrollably, blushing.
"I'm serious. You might even be almost as smart as me."
"Oh, so I can't be smarter than you?" You leaned in, closer to his face, hoping to intimidate him. You noticed his heart pounding, but he looked unaffected.
"No one is as smart as me." He booped your nose. "But atleast you're cute."
"Ugh! You can't just say things like that."
"Why? Am I making you nervous?"
"No. Never."
"Okay." He looked away smiling, pretending to believe you.
"Do you want to fail biology?"
"No."
"Then stop staring and listen to me."
"Bossy." He muttered under his breath.
"What was that?"
"Nothing."
He bought you food after detention. When he was walking you home, he sneakily intertwined his fingers with yours, and shoved them in his warm pocket.
You woke up to nerdy memes and funny cat tiktoks sent at 3 am.
He found you in between every period to either bring you snacks, or just to tease you in front of your friends.
VI. On the sixth day of detention, you were looking for him in the crowded halls. You spotted him next to your locker, but your smile faded quickly when you saw a girl next to him. She handed him a photo album, he smiled at her, they talked for a few minutes before they hugged and he waved her goodbye.
He turned around to see you staring at him and he started making his way to you with a huge smile on his face, but was surprised when you turned your back to him and walked off furiously.
He sped up to catch up with you, which wasn't hard considering his height.
"Hey, what's up, why are you ignoring me?"
You didn't say anything to him. He grabbed your wrist gently, careful not to hurt you. He was met with an angry and hurt expression on your face.
"What's wrong? Please, talk to me. What happened?"
"You lead me on. That's what happened." You prepared to walk away once again, but he pulled you back by your waist with a faint touch.
"Don't touch me." you breathed out.
He took his hands off immediately. "Please tell me what's wrong, Y/n. Please, don't leave." His tone was pleading, yearning even.
"You made me think that you liked me and that we genuinely have amazing potential just to hug and smile all lovingly at a girl in front of me."
"Y/n-" he started.
"Seriously? And you cant say that's your older sister. I literally met her. That's not her, Martin." you went on, feeling angry tears pool in your eyes.
"Y/n!" he raised his voice slightly, cutting you off. "She's my cousin."
"What..?"
"I can introduce you to her right now. Ple-" "No." you cut him off. "I can call her to come here right now- Please don't leave-" "Martin, stop."
"Y/n, I really, like, really like you. You're such a genuine person. I used to think popular kids were annoying and mean, but you're popular for a reason. You're always radiating with such a bright energy, you can lighten up any room you walk into with just that stupid gorgeous smile of yours- You always listen to people and give them such great advice. You get everything i vent to you about, even when i feel like such a burden to anyone else. You make me feel like I can be understood. Like there's still someone out there willing to help me. And I am too. God, I'd do anything to help you with anything. I've never felt this connected to any person in such a short period of time but you. Please don't leave."
You cover your mouth, shocked. "Martin, I feel so stupid."
"Please don't."
"I like you too. I like you so much , Martin. But i need a bit- I need a little time. I'm not mad at you at all, I misunderstood, and I'm not gonna leave. I just need to figure this out on my own for a bit." you let it out, quickly grabbing your bag from the floor and running home.
You plop on the bed with a loud thud and scream into your pillow. You didn't feel angry at him, not even a little. You felt embarrassed and mad about yourself. You allowed yourself to throw a jealous fit over a guy you fell in love with exactly 6 days ago. And he wasn't even in the wrong.
VII. The last day of detention, after your last period, you basically threw your stuff into your bag and sprinted to the detention hall.
You found Martin biting his nails in his usual seat, his leg bouncing, a habit you noticed he had when anxious.
"Martin." You said.
He stood up immediately, and you ran to him, hugging him as tight as possible.
"I like you too. I like you a lot. You and your stupid stupid nerdy interests. You and your silly long rants about science and producing beats- everything. This week of detention that I thought would be hell might just be the best thing that ever happened in my life." your voice was muffled from his hoodie, as he caressed your head and rocked your body side to side like a baby, while still hugging. He took your chin in his hand and made you look at him.
