as the other girl comes into class, carrie nervously waves her over. she’s been dreading this since the girl missed class the day before, so stumbling over her words, she, barely above a whisper, mumbles out, ❝ tatum, uh – i-i didn’t have anybody to partner up with so.. yesterday while you were out the teacher said you’d be assigned to me. if .. if that’s.. – ❞ she stops, swallows hard and it almost seems like she’s not going to even try to continue, when, ❝ – i can do all the work. not that .. i think you’re .. dumb or anything. i just .. get it if you don’t want to meet outside school or .. you think your crowd will pester you about it. ❞ she can already see stu picking the other girl up, screaming out, better be careful or scary carrie will put a hex on you.

Sid had once called Carrie “uncomfortable to talk to”, and now Tatum thinks she knows what her friend had meant. She tries not to judge people based on what Stu says, since he’s kind of a shitheel even if they are dating now, but just hearing the apologetic, cowering tone of the other girl’s voice makes Tatum shift anxiously in her shoes. Makes her feel like she should be apologizing to Carrie, for --for what? For how the other girls treat her? Tatum doesn’t have any control over that. “I can escape my crowd for a few hours,” Tatum finds herself offering (what, are you trying to be a good person now?) “If you want to come over after class, you can fill me in on the assignment?” It isn’t meant to come out as a question, but it does. There’s something sort of...fragile...about the other girl. Maybe it’s in the tension radiating off her in waves. Either way, Tatum finds herself trying to dial down her tendency to be (bitchy?) demanding.
