This is actually a symptom of a major problem facing the transfeminist movement, namely that academic transfeminism (an offshoot of women's studies) is not just separate/alienated from political transfeminism (our movement), but actually predates it by 10-20 years. That's why you have the likes of Koyama, Gill-Peterson, and a number of mostly afab PhDs wielding the privileges of bourgeois intellectualism against more grassroots transfeminists (and transfeminisms, to borrow their language), stealing the voices of working-class, especially Global South transfems for the purpose. That's also why they can have Verso or whichever academic journal publish some of the most transmisogynistic, racist drivel you've seen under the "transfeminist" label while we don't even get to edit our own wikipedia page.

Sharing our name with a largely astroturfed academic sub-subfield is mostly a coincidence. It's the accident of their already having colonised the most convenient name for ourselves before we could develop actual political theory. In reality we share no history and no common discourses except for the same old antagonism between workers and bourgeois intellectuals.
