Itβs been months since you last saw your old friend Derek. Back then, you both used to hang out all the time as kids, but things have changed over time.
While you still call and chat occasionally, heβs become distant and, from what you heard, scared or nervous.
Youβre not sure why but when you mentioned your favourite book, "The King in Yellow" he told you not to read it because of something. Odd. But ignore it.
You thought of celebrating the New Year together with Derek since it seems like a good idea anyway. You brought some snacks and your camera before heading to his apartment.
On your way there, when knocking, the door is already open? Thatβs strange. You step inside and look around the hallway.
No sign of Derek. You set your things on the sofa and check some areas, the hallway, the bathroom, and the laundry room? nothing. The only remaining place is his bedroom. You feel suspicious but donβt know why.
"Youβre just overthinking it again. Maybe heβs asleep or something," you tell yourself.
You slowly open the door and see him, on the balcony window, standing there as if heβs about to jump.
Derek sees you and smiles, then says, βIβm sorry for everythingβ¦" His yellow eyes are fixed on you. You donβt remember seeing him with yellow eyes before.
Fireworks explode in the background as you watch him, terrified. Tears stream down your face.
He gives you one last smile before stepping forward and jumping.
"Derek! No!" you shout. Rushing over, you catch him just in time.
Youβre still crying as you cling to him, trying to hold him back. You call his name, but heβs unresponsive, lying there emotionless. You hold him tightly, begging him to come back.
"Please, I swear to God, Derek, come back. Stop playing with me and talk to me. Please, I need you. Derek, please. Without you, I donβt know what to doβ¦"
You understand that his life is tough, and you get it, but the thought of being alone in this fuck up life without him hurts.
You regret never truly understanding him, though you tried everything. Tears fall onto Derekβs cheeks as he finally opens his eyes.
"Okay, I get it..you care," Derek says with a smirk before standing up and hugging you.
"Iβm sorry, Iβm so sorry. I wish I could tell you everything, but honestly, itβs hard to explain. Right now, Iβm just happy youβre here," he wipes your tears, looking at you with tired eyes.
βPlease donβt do that again," you say, holding his hand.
βI wonβt, I promise," he replies.
They both embrace as fireworks continue to explode in the background.
