Call me casual one more time
One of the main gripes I have about the gaming community is the new use of separating labels. I recently watched a YouTube personality that I watch on a regular basis who previews a lot of FPS games and focuses mainly on COD. During the video he kept referring to games like Skyrim and Fallout 3 and New Vegas as casual games. Personally I have invested way more time into games like Fallout 3 and New Vegas and Skyrim than I have probably every COD game I've owned collectively. The reason I feel like this slightly derogatory is that I have been playing games since I was born. I was playing a Winnie the Pooh game on my Playstation 1 and it was rated C! That isn't even a rating anymore! I don't know why but the term casual game and casual gamers sort of irks me for the reason of giving labels based on preconceptions. I don't play a whole lot of COD but I do play games almost every day and invest a lot of time into modding my games to fit how I want to play and experience a game. The problem though is since I'm not honing my craft in an esports approved game I'm not hardcore enough even though I'm huge into video game journalism and learning everything I can about the development and creation processes of games. I wish that the term casual and hardcore would disappear. I understand the need to differentiate between a professional and someone who does not get paid to play a video game but the term hardcore and casual only serves to cause a rift in a community that has no purpose in getting separated. I may not play a whole lot of COD but I respect the community and I would hope that the gaming community as a whole could ban together someday and all realize that we are all just a bunch of people who enjoy sitting down and enjoying a sweet digital experience.Â
