Well the strange seahorse is going to get grabbed up quickly into a certain dragon god’s robe as he appeared on the scene. Ninetails probably wanted an explanation, hm?

“Brush gods can generate ‘children’ to fulfill certain tasks in our stead. They are extensions of own spirits but with individual wills, not unlike your own fox spirits. That one was supposed to be checking the cherry blossoms for any decay.”

He might seem a little embarrassed, or at least unwilling to make eye contact concerning what just happened.

    “…So does that mean I already have       grandchildren? I’m only twenty-three.       I don’t need to be a grandfather yet.”

“We children of Amaterasu can further divide our presence by creating children of our own. While they are separate entities and have their own consciousness, they can only fulfill the same role that we already possess, unlike the Great Mother who can designate powers to her offspring or even change our forms at her whim. Our children are eventually returned to our own essence once the task that they have been assigned is complete.”

“And age is not relevant when a mortal is joined to deity. You seem to be shocked by this on a regular basis.”

“I really should leave the Cave more often...”

“…god or not I will still smack you with my tail.”

“That does raise the question of ‘which one,’ however. Regardless, I must say that I am pleased to see you. Such beauty is missed when it is absent, and my view today is far brighter for it.”

“Ah, hello, my dear. Have you been here long? How very nice to see you after your long time away.”

“I’m right here you walking wall scroll!”

Sniff. “I miss her so much...”

“Stop saying I’m dead.”

“Sometimes I think I can still hear her voice...”

“Yes, I’d rather not see Brother Tachigami get riled up over something unavoidable in such an otherwise calm place.”

Combat should not reach such a quiet, even sacred place as the Cave of Nagi and the River of Stars. They were meant to be as such, preserved as they were for weary souls to rest if need be. … Yes, perhaps Yumigami should have gone there instead of Yomigami coming to find her instead. It would have been quieter there, easier to think and sort herself out and to talk to Yomigami about it. Even just a little had moved on towards other topics which left her calmer.

Yumigami blinked, drawn from those thoughts as he spoke.

“You never overstay your visits, Brother Yomigami. We rarely seem to get the chance to meet up at all!” She bit her lip then, a steady little trickle of guilt threading through her being. “If you need to head off I won’t keep you though perhaps I shall come visit your abode next time instead. It has been long since I’ve seen the River of Stars, after all.”

Guilt at not seeing the others more was not something that Yomigami shared with his sister. His was a more solitary existence, and whatever interruption came by visitors was simply a welcome addition. It was simply a fact that most of them stayed in their own areas.

“You also have your aspects that demand your attention, I’m sure. It is best that we not neglect them for too long, even for the sake of one another. Ah, and I would hear more about this person on whom you have placed your affections at some time when you are of warmer spirits on the matter.”

His firm hand would come to rest one final time on the smaller goddess’s head. No need for long departures.

“I will anticipate fondly the time that you do eventually come to visit. Fare thee well until that day, Yumigami.”

“Aye. I do not use this pendant often, only when required too. Though I have been using it for leisurely activity to stretch mine legs, so to speak.” She wasn’t sure if the idiom would be lost on the goddess, but it was good to say it nonetheless. Being surrounded by her family was a wonderful experience, yet Lyth could always use a small breather from the hectic life around her.

Yet the feeling of returning to her family was nonetheless warm and always filled with the desire to stay. Hence why she had taken so long to return to this realm. She blinked, having caught up in her thoughts, that she missed what Nuregami spoke of. Holding out a hand, Lyth took the mermaid coin in silent contemplation and awe. A means to travel between ponds, she said?

        Interesting.  

“I see, thank you.” She dipped her head in a brief nod of respect. “I shall keep it close, though I do not know how long I intend to stay in this realm; I shall ensure to keep it on hand should I ever require such a thing.”

“You’re quite welcome. You need not use it as a tool if you do not find that you require it. It is simply a trinket that you may keep with you, or perhaps you would give it to your family as an interesting item from another world. Without the need for other blessings that I can provide, something small like this seems appropriate, yes?”

Even for the gods, small offerings could be as equally important as large acts of faith. The same was true in reverse as well, when applicable. Nuregami wasn’t entirely sure that Lyth could make use of it, but it was a unique item nonetheless.

“If you are to be in this world long, the center location that you may wish to visit is Sei-an City to the south of here. Generally visitors arrive from the North, so I am not aware of if you have seen it yet. It is quite impressive for what we have in this land, though perhaps it would be small compared to your world. There are many shrines along the way as well, so perhaps you may find other deities of the land. I do hope for however long you are in this land that you enjoy your stay, and of course you can remain at my pool for as long as you prefer as well.”

It did not surprise her that Yomigami did not venture far from this world if at all. To do so would be to abandon their duties after all and it was the reason Yumigami would always find a way back in as timely a fashion as she could. Even if their mother’s wanderlust ran through the rabbit’s blood as well Yumigami could not leave behind Nippon just to sate it. To do so would be cruel to those that depended on her.

“Yes, I can’t help but to agree, as curious as some of those other places might be. Besides, this is home. I could hardly imagine any of us leaving it anytime soon,” she agreed.

A small perhaps nervous chuckle would escape her, imagining Natsu wandering into the Cave of Nagi. No, it would be far too peaceful for him there. No doubt he’d try to fight Yomigami.

“I’m afraid that fiery boy I mentioned would find it too quiet there and would cause trouble. Such is his nature.”

The concern raised by the moon goddess might have been a valid one, but it resulted in the dragon giving an amused grunt at the thought of someone being so confrontational in the Cave. Truly it was not the dragon that one would need to fear by causing a ruckus, but someone who resided far deeper, beyond the River of Stars.

“Hmm, yes, that is a concern. It would be quite bad for Tachigami to overhear any loud outbursts from my location. I cannot imagine that they would wait to assess the situation.”

Moreover, it wasn’t certain whether someone could even survive their sibling’s wrath. Power Slash seemed harmless against innocent beings, but against someone doing wrong it might just cause serious damage.

“Well regardless of his suitability, dear sister, I would quite enjoy to have you come visit as well. If these occasions of grief and uncertainty have become common, then at the very least I can offer you solitude, quiet, and rejuvenation.”

“That said, perhaps I am overstaying my visit if your spirits have improved, or I can remain here a little time longer if you so wish. The evening approaches, and so too your travel through the night.”

“Aha, perhaps literally and figuratively. He’s quite a wild child though he has a grasp on fiery magics,” Yumigami elaborated. “He’s got a good heart though, despite the trouble he may cause. Though I find myself curious of this dragon knight that you met as well.”

She sat back a little, thinking over the events of the last year or so. How many other places had she glimpsed and visited that were so new and even exotic at times? Yumigami couldn’t say she could recount them all but a few did come to mind.

“I suppose I’ve run into a few before finding my way home again. I recall a curious handful of places that did not seem to operate as they should. But what of you? Have you managed to cross such thresholds into new worlds, Brother Yomigami?”

For the great discomfort that had brought the dragon’s attention to his sister in the first place, it seemed that Yumigami had finally begun to settle down by directing her attention elsewhere. That was good. Even gods needed diversions from their troubles.

“I have looked briefly into other worlds from what vantage point I may have, but only scarcely have I passed into those realms. My responsibilities in this world take my attention to the degree that I cannot depart from it long, even when those means are made available to me. However, even if I am curious, I find the joys and troubles of this world, Amaterasu’s world, to be more than satisfying.” Even moreso with the current state of things, as well.

“Although I have said that, if the spirit of your fiery friend is pure enough to detect and enter the Cave of Nagi, I will gladly meet any individuals that you may send my way. It has served as a place of isolation and rest for at least one such traveler already.”

Though mortals could not cross the river of stars, even the welcoming spring just inside the Cave had its own measure of beauty and respite. It wasn’t that bad of a place to host guests, really, as long as they respected that peace.

While Lyth herself would allow her children to choose whether or not they wished to be religious, as it was only right, she would only hold reservation in how they acted upon said religion. Even if it was merely meeting gods, there was a certain decorum that must be upheld. Yet, the dragoness could also concede to the point that children were curious; and wont in indulging onto said whims to sate their never-ending desire for answers to things that possibly didn’t have an answer.

Pardon the term, but gods knew how many times she had to settle squabbles between them when it got to the point of sniffing a curious rock at the same time.

Her lips curved upwards once more into a smile at Nuregami, “I would enjoy to know more of your siblings, yes. To at least, show proper respect and decorum when meeting them. Even dragons know to bow their heads to those on the immortal side of life.”

A pause given as Nuregami spoke of how she managed to travel between words, and in answer Lyth pulled on a chain around her neck; a pendant with a sapphire encased with a thin silver coating dangled from the end of it. T’was not often that the dragoness would offer to show it, yet since Nuregami inquired, and Lyth saw no harm. T’was useless in the hands of a non-Lyeulian anyways. “This gift from mine gods when I was their tool. I used it to bring Lyeulians whom have escaped their noticed back home; as you have seen that we Lyeulian dragons can be… quite destructive. Inward and out.” A brief smile, and Lyth tucked it back into her clothing. 

“I haven’t seen the idea of giving it back, as they never said I had to return it. I mostly use it when I needs get away, or visit old friends.”

Well Nuregami’s intention hadn’t really been to have Lyth pay reverence to her siblings. The serpent had simply thought the dragoness might enjoy meeting the others, and Lyth was an interesting individual herself. It would be a good experience all around.

However, those thoughts were interrupted with the presentation of Lyth’s pendant. Nuregami herself couldn’t identify it, but it definitely seemed to bear the trace of divine energy. Trinkets like that weren’t necessarily rare in this world either, though most tools gifted by divine beings were already ancient at this point. There were, however, other things that could also be compared to the trinket.

“A device of the gods, indeed, though repurposed to something far more useful for your innocent intents. We have something similar in this world, though its effects are much less powerful and its origins are borne in less divine stance. You may have one.”

From the long, flowing sleeve Nuregami’s hand emerged, and between slender fingers a green coin hung from a thin red ribbon. She held it out to Lyth with a pleasant smile.

“This is a Mermaid Coin. Scattered through Nippon are various springs where the water swirls in a tight spiral. If you toss this coin into one, you can travel to any one of its siblings, though you must have the destination in mind. I have no need of the coin, as I can use this power without the need for it. It is primarily a magical item for mortals.”

Yumigami would hum in response, drawing her knees up to rest her chin atop them. She supposed Yomigami had a point there. But then with as long lived as they all were, patterns could be viewed in hindsight as well. Perhaps Yomigami did not see it as such, however. Such was the way of things, each having their own observations and processes of thought.

“Techniques of their own, or of others? It’s possible that perhaps they ran into artifacts with such abilities, unknowing of what they did?” Merely a few possibilities to entertain as well. It wasn’t like many of them seemed to know just how to get back to their original homes after all.

For a moment she’s quiet, thinking over the newcomers she’d both glimpsed and befriended. So many different people from across all walks of life. How many came here of their own volition and how many had not? It was impossible to tell without outright asking.

“A dragon warrior? How curious… I’ve run into a fair few myself though the most notable is a fiery boy who frequents Agata Forest.”

Passages between worlds weren’t entirely unknown, but often such things were sequestered to the far reaches of the world. Even then, portals more often led from place to place in a single reality or in a single rare occasion to different time periods. It might be hard to believe, if the proof weren’t so pervasive.

“A ‘fiery’ boy? I can only presume that you mean it in a very literal sense. Perhaps one such individual would not be best located in the Forest, but I imagine it is no surprise that so many visitors would be found crossing through.”

That did, though, lead to another intriguing question.

“Have you also found yourself in other worlds, Yumigami? I have... personally found a few small paths within the River of Stars to that effect, leading to the night sky of a world different than our owh. However, mortals cannot tread that domain. Perhaps you have encountered something similar in your time of peaceful passings.”

It was something of a relief, changing the topic like this. It gave her time to calm down further, to clear her thoughts and catch up with Yomigami. It felt like too long since they’d last chatted. She’d rather it not all be spent in tears, or on her problems.

“I see… I never really thought of it like that, but yes, I suppose that would be the case… It must be so natural for you to be able to pick up on the patterns, Brother Yomigami. I am glad to hear you and Ninetails have each other to pass quiet time in each other’s company, however. It must make things easier to bear at times to have that.” A pause would follow, head cocked to one side. “Ah, yes, I’ve met a few. A curious phenomenon, is it not?”

That was, of course putting it mildly.

“A pattern is only truly noticeable whenever it ceases to be so. In that sense it is only an unnatural flow of souls that draws attention, and all of us siblings would perceive that level of imbalance. At any other time to comment on it is like noticing that there is a breeze blowing: simply an afterthought to those without concern for it.”

There was a faint twinge of humor in the dragon’s voice as he spoke that time. Perhaps he simply found this notion of him being special in regards to the souls of the living to be comical. Certainly that was within his responsibility, but his purview did not necessarily provide any significant amount of perception into those things over anyone else who devoted themselves that fully to such duties. Nevertheless, he turned his attention back to the strange guests in question.

“For the wayward travelers, I have to imagine that they have developed some technique that operates on very much the same properties as the Mermaid Pools, though with access to different worlds rather than different springs. Of course the nature of their arrival is less important than their arriving. However, to my own part I have only encountered a very small number. I did have a dragon warrior visit the Cave in the not too distant past, so these individuals would seem to be from several different realms than just those similar to our own. And what manner of individuals have you seen?””
