i love the song ‘heroes’ by david bowie. it was first introduced to me when I read the book ‘perks of being a wallflower.’ i became so hyper fixated on it that i listened to all of Charlie’s favorite songs. It also introduced me to The Smiths. yea i wish i knew the characters i relate so much to. rah rah.

i'm sure someone's pointed this out before, but david bowie's 'heroes' is a song about two lovers, one from east berlin and the other from west berlin, that are constantly under the fear of death, so they dream of being free together. the couple are so determined to be together despite the political climate of the time, that they meet every day underneath a gun turret on the berlin wall

so you're telling me that a cover of this song plays when will's "body" is dragged out of the quarry. you know, the moment when the fear of will's death is inspired in everyone. the song continues to play over the party's reaction, where mike is angrily yelling at eleven because he was determined that will was alive and that they would find him alive so they could reunite, or be together again. you're telling me that the lyric, "and the guns shot above our heads," plays when mike arrives home and breaks down into tears. you know, a lyric about how the couple's determination puts them into a situation that's less than ideal, but they look past it because being together makes them feel like they're the above the situation. and then, of course, the lyric, "and we kissed as though nothing could fall," playing while mike is sobbing in karen's arms. i think enough people have talked about that lyric placement to where i don't need to comment on why it's significant.

one of the lovers is from east berlin, and the other is from west berlin. like how mike is from the east, and as of season 4, will is from the west. and the couple in the song are in a political climate that's dangerous for them and could separate them. like how mike and will are shown to be in a homophobic political climate for a majority of the show. what with troy, james, lonnie, joyce having to imply to hopper she's worried will could've been hate-crimed, ted making a vaguely homophobic comment to mike, and how the aids crisis would literally be happening in the background of the entirety of stranger things so far.
