- mouse in a trap

being part of the mafia feels like being part of corporate a lot of time. there’s always something to keep track of, something to check up on, the fear of having your boss yell at you. though, of course, corporate doesn’t usually require guns or your boss literally threatening to take your life, but the general idea is mostly the same - getting as much money and power as possible, even at the cost of your employees’ health (or life). 

it’s a bit twisted, seungjin supposes, to equate something as horrible as gangs and violence to something so tediously conventional as documents and office drama, but whether seungjin is dealing with paperwork in the hospital or the organisational part of drug producing, he can’t really find that much of a difference. so going from one place to the other feels like just more of the same, even if both are needed for him to survive, and are, technically, exciting. 

as he parks his car and gets out, he briefly thinks about how fun it would be to have a shoot out or a bombing today. fucked up, yes, but fun? always. or mostly. unless he ends up having his hands deep in someone’s guts. the walk up to the main production facility is long and seungjin wonders why couldn’t they have a sort of a walk in and everything’s right there convenience store set up. obviously that wouldn’t be as cool and secretive as what they have currently, but it would sure save his legs.

there’s many twists and turns, and corridors that lead to dead ends (honestly, who came up with the plan of this building?) that it’s easy to get lost if you don’t know where you’re going. easy to get killed, if you’re not a usual here, too. seungjin’s mind races, even when he’s not thinking about much specifically, but his thoughts are cut short when a body appears from behind a corner and seungjin smashes right into him.

an intruder? a rival gang member? he looks too baby to be in a gang, but then again, so does seungjin.

hello hello this is ivy, which come of you may remember!! i was so happy to see this place still up and running and i am so happy to be back!!! i still reside in gmt +2 yay for being alone on the dash during the day!! 

im gonna be rping the old but still good med student seungjin (an updated version, at least) so woo

grew up in myeongcho, a true local

super wealthy, super well known doctor family

father was his literal role model

started learning medical stuff since he was little, since all of his family revolved around medicine

mother? died at childbirth, or at least seungjin was told so because he doesn’t remember her from the first five months of his life

doesn’t talk too much, he’s one of those “talk if you have something to say” kind of guys

his father was killed when he was sixteen by a gang member

never really got over it, he spent the next two years trying to find the person who killed his father, and after finally doing so, he killed them

now he knew he had a big target on his back from that day on, especially considering he never really bothered covering up his murder well enough (he didn’t leave tracks, but it was very demonstrative)

so naturally, he turned to a gang to help him out

an old friend of his pointed him to lynx

he didn’t have much to offer to the gang at first, settled for being the clean up crew, but soon got into medical school and ended up becoming a medic for the team as well as getting involved with not the best of people in the university and turning to drug producing

it makes sense, doesn’t it?

gets his prescription blanks from his uncle, so he can pretty much get any drug he wants semi-legally

back to his daily life - he doesn’t really bring that much attention to him (other than his looks, of course. a lot of people doubt his credibility as a doctor basing their assumptions on looks, but his knowledge and family history show otherwise)

quiet, but outgoing. he’s considerably a warm person, someone you really wouldn’t expect to be in a gang, has his morals sorted out quite nicely on the surface, though has no problems straight up ripping teeth out in a gang setting

he’s kind of a mess and even if he says he’s over his father’s death, he really isn’t

big secret not yet known to him but his father and mother were both killed by the same people (for reasons not yet known to me)

now for the possible plots??

the people that killed his father were from phoenix, so it’s possible that they found out about seungjin and they’re really interested in getting their revenge

childhood friends - whether it’s people he’s talked to all his life or had lost contact briefly. people who have been there all his life would probably notice the way he changed after his father’s death, and even more after a certain night when he was eighteen. other childhood friends could be members of other gangs and after seungjin finds out there could be a whole “i trusted you and you betrayed me” thing

the person who pointed them to lynx (not mandatory for them to be a member, but preferrably)

love interests? (he doesn’t get laid often, help a boy out) if it’s forbidden - even b e t t e r

the volume is barely a hearing level at this point, the screen of the tv casting a pale blue light onto the viewers. seolhyun’s curled up on the couch with both feet up, head on a pillow that rests on top of seungjin’s lap. the male’s fingers thread through seolhyun’s hair idly as his eyes stay focused on the screen. he’s not even sure what they’re watching or even if either of them is watching.

eventually, his eyes fall onto seolhyun’s face and he notices the way her lids slide shut once, then twice, then a third time for a while longer. so he continues combing through her hair, fighting his own tiredness as he pulls a blanket over her body, arm drapped lazily on top. sometime soon, his own eyes close as he promises himself he’ll bring her up to his bed right in a second.

he wakes up five hours later with the birds already chirping and his neck hurting.

seungjin grins at the younger male’s words, shaking his head. he’s already finished with his food, but doesn’t protest when woori orders more, even if he’s eating for three people and the bill will come out to quite a bit. well since you’re treating me i can choose whatever i want, right? and seungjin finds that he never has the will to say no. not that it matters, really. where he’s from money flows freely and even the amounts of food, big enough to feed a horse, woori orders won’t leave the male’s bank account dry.

seungjin watches as woori’s cheeks stretch as the male stuffs another rice cake into his mouth, lips stained orange with the sauce. he watches as woori’s tongue sticks out to clean up the mess on his lips, missing just the corner of his mouth. seungjin laughs. “actually, there’s something on your face.” 

he doesn’t wait for woori to pick up a napkin and clean himself, and instead goes ahead and takes matters into his own hands (or hand). seungjin leans over the table, thumb pressing against the corner of his mouth as he wipes the residue off.

      the phone hits the floor with a sick crack as seungjin abandons it for the woman’s wrist, checking her pulse. he’s close. “ hey hyung, are you cold? ‘cause i have a spare hoodie in my bag if you want, ” woori offers, tone soft and easy, looking at seungjin with a soft smile like he’s not holding a blood soaked sweater against a woman who might have ruptured an artery and is losing way too much blood for her own good. it’s easy for woori to do this; to switch gear, to remain calm, to smile even as his fingers are warm and sticky, even as another life slips through fingers. though, he supposes it isn’t so for seungjin. he’s probably yet to seen enough deaths to be so, casual with it so the medic adds, “ hyung, hey, hyung. ” woori nudges seungjin, shifting closer to him. “ she’ll be alright, you’re here, i’m here and the ambulance will be here soon, you’ll save her. she’ll go home and her children will get to hug her and kiss her, she’ll be okay. so, breathe, okay? ”

he should be used to it. he should be used to dying. a person dies every seven seconds, if not more often than that, and seungjin spends his days amongst hundreds of dying people. yet, he finds that he’s never prepared for the inevitable. it hurts the most when it’s children. when it’s children being wheeled into surgery, never coming out; when it’s children weakly clutching their parents’ hands before they let go; when it’s children that never wake up from a night’s sleep. it also hurts when it’s the elderly: the ones that their kids have forgotten and they die alone, the ones that try to hang on for a while longer, to be with their children just a couple of seconds more. it hurts when it’s mothers, and fathers that die. it hurts every single time. and he knows that the hurt never changes, never subsides, you just learn to deal with it better. and though the pain is easier to manage than it was before, it doesn’t change the fact that his whole chest aches because she doesn’t deserve to die. “i’ll do it later, thanks.” he smiles at woori’s offer, both glad that he has woori by his side, and a bit disappointed in himself because he should be the stronger one. he knows woori can feel his fear, and it shouldn’t be that way. because seungjin is older. because seungjin is the trained professional.

but considering the things he’s learned recently, it doesn’t surprise that woori isn’t affected by any of this. a part of him groups woori along with the rest of them despite the fact that he’s here, helping seungjin instead. he feels the warmth of woori’s body next to him and despite the conflicting thoughts inside of his head, his own muscles relax just a tiny bit, and seungjin can smile more sincerely now, nodding. “yeah, i know.” he agrees, though he knows the words whole practically no truth to them. they’ll save her. or not. they’ll move on, despite what happens. maybe he’ll move on from the fact that someday woori kills him. or the other way around. they’ll move on from the fact that they’re supposed to hate each other. or they will end up being enemies. either way, they will move on in one way or another, and seungjin can’t change what’s already determined. “hey, i’m gonna go see if the ambulance is here... so they don’t have to search for us, you know.” he announces in a quiet tone before standing up and heading out the alley to both wait for help and clear his mind.

it’s soon enough that the ambulance arrives and he helps the woman into the back of the ambulance, asking them to please take good care of her, and tell the doctors to call me once she’s in. and as he watches the ambulance leave, he slides down the wall and onto the ground, resting for a moment, and cleaning himself up with the gauze and desinfectant the paramedics left behind.

“it’s been four years since then – since… —- they made me sleep with all kinds of men – women …”  she hopes he knows what she’s implying,  for she’s unable to say it out loud.

it’s not until a few moments later that seungjin notices the tears rolling down seolhyun’s cheeks and almost immediately guides the car towards the side of the road, though it proves to be quite difficult to do with one hand. he comes to a stop without letting go of seolhyun’s hand and puts the car in park, letting the engine run as he scoots as close as he can manage, fingers wiggling out of her grasp just so he would embrace her with both of his arms. “seolhyun...” is all he manages in a whisper, not knowing whether he should cry or get angry. 

at this point, he just feels defeated. seungjin has no idea how to help his friend, he knows it’s not easy if not impossible to put the gang life behind them. the difference between seungjin and seolhyun, though, is that she never asked for any of this. and seungjin can’t help but feel extremely devastated. he wipes the tears running down her face again and again as they keep coming. for now, all he wants to do is hide her from the world. “how much money is it? i- i think i could have enough money to help you out.”

even seungjin is smart enough to know bailing her out would never work, but at least it’s hope, at least for a few hours.

         “ you ask that like you’re the one who wouldn’t get bored first. ” because, in the end … isn’t that what happened too? “ but it’s funny, seungjin. you also say that like i care to remember you that much now. ”

“it’s a game, eunmi.” seungjin sighs, putting his glass of soju down onto the table. he looks tired, defeated, but he doesn’t show the regret he feels for asking her that. perhaps he’s a bit too under the influence to respect their boundaries, but he’s brave enough to ask her in hopes to hear a positive answer. but this is eunmi and nothing positive comes from her when it’s seungjin talking to her. she deserves to hate him, he supposes, but that doesn’t stop him from wanting to be in her life. it’s like a fresh, stinging wound that you just can’t help but press your fingers against, the pulses of pain shooting through your whole body somehow too pleasurable. 

he looks at her face again, and in this drunken state, all he wants to do is to kiss her and to make her feel okay. but what made her feel loved back in the day makes her feel disgusted with both him and herself. the first part of her answer makes his heart sink to his stomach, a nauseating feeling of guilt rising into his throat, constricting around it. seungjin ducks his head and nods as he stares at their feet. he probably shouldn’t have asked her, should have left the stupid game of truth and dare when everyone had, but instead he wanted so desperately to hear her answer, to hurt them both. to prove to himself that he was as bad as eunmi thought he was.

“but you stayed.” he argues, despite knowing he had already lost the fight. but maybe at least for once, he gets to speak his mind, not some ugly lie he’s been using to protect his heart. “i broke your heart, yet you don’t hate me as much as you should have.” finding he courage, he stares straight at her. “you didn’t fight against what people said about you - i defended you more than anyone else even after what happened - and instead of just leaving whenever i was around, you just stayed next to me, loathing me. tell me, is that what people do when they can’t stand someone?” he shouldn’t push it, he shouldn’t risk getting strangled by her. but if eunmi is the one that kills him, he would be glad to die at her hands. placing his hand on hers, he continues “besides, if you hated me so much, you wouldn’t have stayed for the last round of truth or dare when you knew it would be just the two of us.”

     woori falls to his knees by seungjin’s side, reaching into his bag and pulling out the first aid kit he keeps on him just in case he’s called. he unlocks it and flips it open, baring its content for seungjin. “ judging by the amount of blood, the wound might have ruptured an artery, ” he says as he puts his hands on top of seungjin’s nudging them away softly to take his place. “ there should be enough in there to make her a temporary solution and bring her to the hospital where they can patch her up properly. you know how to do that right, hyung? ” woori looks straight to seungjin, a sheepish smile curling lips. the medic could do it, like he’s done so many times before but seungjin is trained, he should know better than woori, shouldn’t he? “ i’ll maintain the pressure and try to stop the bleeding, you can do that instead. ” there’s still a chance; they can save her still, he tells himself and turns away from the image that keeps flashing by. 

if he were to have a moment, he would confront woori. shove him against the wall, grab him by his throat, demand answers about what’s he’s doing in a gang. there’s a commotion inside of his brain because how could this boy, how could the innocent woori be this vile, this horrible? he feels woori’s hands nudge is own and his throat burns for the briefest of moments because this is unfair because they shouldn’t be in this situation, ever, but his concentrates again, knowing he’d regret letting this woman die much more than he would regret not yelling at woori for lying to him. “yeah.” he lets out a breath in response to the younger’s question as he looks through the kit, finding just enough gauze to bandage a bleeding leg, but not to stop a bleeding abdomen.

“fuck,” he groans in frustration before pulling his sweater off, the cool air of the morning sending a shiver up his spine. “here, “ he shoves the sweater against woori’s hands, “use this as gauze, we need an ambulance.” for the first time, as he dials for the ambulance, fear strikes him. he realizes the woman might just die. this is the one person he won’t manage to save. he won’t be the same hero he was when he was sixteen. the three kids will be motherless. do they have a father? will they end up on the streets? how will they find out their mother died. worrying his lip between his teeth, he bites down hard enough to draw blood. he’s truly hopeless. “we have a woman here, about fourty years old, bleeding from a deep abdominal wound, possibly ruptured an artery.” peritonitis almost always means death, he remembers. if she even lives long enough to contract it. “yeah, we’re putting pressure on it, but she’s lost a lot of blood, please hurry. can you guys track my location? okay, thanks.” he drops down next to the woman to check her pulse, phone screen cracking as it falls from his hands.

          he says her name like a stranger and it upsets her that he’d said it so tenderly before for it to become this. it pains her that he used to say her name like it was an honor but now it’s poison on his lips. so why is she so weak to let it continue? to drag on this act instead of saying anything? the truth is, she’s afraid of what’s coming. she never thought she would be afraid of him, for any reason, and fingers lace into his hair, body pressed against his, clinging to him as if it’s the last, as if he’ll disappear the moment she lets go. 

he did love her at one point. he still loves her, he thinks; he hopes. seungjin still feels peace wash over him when he looks at her. he feels like she could help him with whatever troubles his mind. but it’s unfair for eunmi to be forced to take care of him. he is a man, he shouldn’t be so weak, he shouldn’t be so emotional. he needs to take care of her, not the other way around. just like when she was younger and would hurt her ankle, he would carry her as he should now. just as he would apologize first when they were younger, he should apologize now as well, but instead his drunken self can only squeeze her tighter so she doesn’t slip out of his grip.

he feels her fingers in his hair and it feels like it’s the only thing he’s ever needed. eyes slowly falling shut, he sighs. “i’m sorry eunmi.” he slurrs his words just a little, fingers curling into her dress tighter so she can’t get away. he wants to tell her what’s bothering him. seungjin wants to tell her about his father who is being tormented by someone he doesn’t know - something she hasn’t been made aware of for over a week now. he wants to tell her why he’s been avoiding her, why the only time he would see her was when his tongue was down her throat and his hands up under her skirt. but saying those things would make the whole situation much more real. giving an explanation would not make anything better. it wouldn’t change the fact that perhaps he deserves all this. he doesn’t know why, but he must deserve it, right?

“i love you, eunmi. i love you so much.” it’s more of a plea than a declaration. a plea she forgives and forgets even though he doesn’t deserve her kindness, a plea that all of this stops even though he’s a bad person who must have done something terrible to lose his mother and now be this close to not having a father.

he’s all alone. and he’s about to lose the other one person he can’t afford to lose. he’s angry and he’s confused, he doesn’t know what to do. he wishes eunmi would just leave. leave him, leave his life, leave him suffering alone. “i’m sorry, i can’t.” he pulls away not looking at her before escaping outside, as far away from eunmi as he can get.

“i’m sorry.”  she speaks up eventually,  fingers fiddling anxiously.  “it’s – it’s not easy to explain.  it really isn’t.  but i’m scared if i tell you,  you’ll – you’ll see me in a different light.  maybe you won’t want to be my friend anymore.  and … you know i don’t really have many friends.”  her eyes stay fixed on her lap,  trying to will herself not to cry.  she never cries.  “i’m just so scared.”

it’s funny, he thinks, how he’s a considerably indifferent man. but when it comes to seolhyun, he finds that he can’t really help but care about her immensely. he wants to shield her from the world, to protect her, possibly mainly because she’s the only piece of his childhood memories left tangible. so he wants to keep her around. he wants to make sure she’s safe because if there’s one thing he’s sure of in this world is that seolhyun will stick with him through thick and thin, just how he would do the same for her.

the silence lasts longer than he had hoped and although he doesn’t expect an answer, he begs for one. he can deal with any kind of answer. he will be fine even if she yells at him or tells him it’s not his business. even if she yelled at him and told him to fuck off, he would be there, in his car, coming to get her the next time she called. once she apologizes, he can feel his stomach turn. perhaps he shouldn’t have said anything. seolhyun wouldn’t have to feel bad if he only decided to stay silent. but he knows that either way the negative aura would linger.

“seolhyun.” he looks at her for the briefest moment when the empty street allows him to, his hand on her trembling fingers as he gathers them in his palm, squeezing reassuringly. “no matter what you tell me... you’re going to be the same seolhyun. you’re still going to be someone i care deeply about. the only difference is will be that i will be able to help you better than i do now.” 

“you know that i really don’t want to lose you, right? and it will never be my intention to do so.”

     “ hydrus got a few of our guys on the other side of the square, ” the medic doesn’t even need to finish his words and the soldier’s rushing off, pushing his dagger into woori’s hands, a weapon to protect himself perhaps, “ keep an eye on them! ” woori meets seungjin’s eyes and simply hums in understanding. there it all goes, he supposes.

the night shift leaves his body aching. forehead presses against the cold window of the car, eyes following the passing houses, then eventually losing focus. seungjin wants to sleep. he can’t sleep. there’s a sense of dread in the air; thick and palpable. he isn’t quite sure why his stomach turns when it’s a morning like any other. except when it’s not. “stop the car.” seungjin jerks back into sitting up in the backseat, his driver stopping promptly. “get out of here, go home, i’ll call you. don’t tell me to not go.” he instructs sternly as he climbs out of the car, shuts the door and hurries to where the crowd of people have gathered around a display of soon-to-be execution.

moments later when screams ring in his ears, a part of him wishes he never got out of the car. 

police and ambulance sirens wail in the distance as he tries to get as far away from the crowd as possible. as long as innocent bystanders are in a crowd, hydrus can’t kill them all. as long as they’re in a crowd, there will be someone out there to help them. that’s not to say for the people that make a run for it, that are left alone and unprotected in the darker alleys where their bodies would not be found for the next few hours or days. 

he follows into an alley where a string of begs and cries are heard, the woman already on her knees, begging the man not to kill her. she has kids. two girls and one boy. they’re five, eight and nine. seungjin grows too angry to hear more. “picking on a woman might be a little too low even for you.” seungjin yells once he’s close enough and sure that the man won’t shoot the woman on sight, his own gun aimed right at the man’s head. “let her go.” the man grins, seungjin wishes he was horrible enough to shoot him right then and there. “you stupid fuck, i said fight me inst-” his blood runs cold as soon as he hears a familiar voice. woori? is that really- “what the fuck” seungjin mutters under his breath at the nickname that leaves the gang member’s lips. mercy? hoping the man is too preoccupied with the other person, he turns his head just the slightest, managing to catch a glimpse of the face he really hoped not to see. seungjin’s eyes meet woori’s for the briefest of moments and seungjin feels like throwing up.

how dare you, woori? how fucking dare you. “our men?” seungjin raises an eyebrow before he turns back to the woman to help her. “don’t just fucking stand there, woori! help me!” he barks as he presses against the woman’s abdomen where it’s gushing blood, the woman falling unconscious.

coming from a wealthy family that's well-known to the island means that attending big, extravagant events is a must. even after his father’s death, he continued to attend these events, though he never really cared for them all that much. but keeping up with appearances is important, and seungjin wanted people to know that despite him being the only representative of the park family on the island, his family still played a cruicial role as any other. upon his father’s death, he’d promised to keep the name of the park family on people’s radars.

he spends the first few hours of the evening talking to people about investments, businesses and other things he doesn’t yet care to know enough about. he’s given a free pass though - he’s young, still grieving, and a doctor-to-be, not quite a businessman to know all of these things. and although he’s doing quite, well as the evening progresses, he finds himself a little bored with the lack of havoc he’s managed to cause so far. 

soon enough, his prayers are answered, and he spots a girl who seems to be out of place no matter how much she tries to blend in. 

interesting. 

seungjin approaches her with a smile, extending his arm to her. “i haven’t seen you around these parts of the island.” read: what are you doing in a rich people’s event, you outsider? there’s no condescension in his voice, but the lightly malicious intent is definitely there somewhere. “are you new to myeongcho? i’m park seungjin, it’s nice to meet you.”

“what do you think, doc?” he inquired more playfully than was expected of someone who’d pulled broken beer bottle out of his hand less than an hour ago, as if he wasn’t entirely aware of the inevitable scolding he was bound to recieve, amicable nature miraculously unfazed, “will we have to amputate?”

as of late, spencer had become the one visitor to the hospital that never surprises seungjin anymore. it’s like he’d taken up residence on the examination table, and antagonizing the doctor to be was his only form of entertainment. it also seemed like spencer had created an alliance with the doctor in charge because seungjin was always the one stuck with treating the male. either that or spencer was here even more often than seungjin himself was, which was concerning, to say the least.

“i’m not giving you a look, it’s just what my face looks like.” seungjin looked exhausted, he could physically feel the dark circles under his eyes, yet he had no idea whether it was general tiredness or if it was due to spencer being here the nth time this month. “at least i admire your... optimism, i guess. usually, people whine and cry about how much it hurts, and how they’re dying. but you... yeah, you seem to never die-” he put on his gloves, then added, with a sigh: “no matter how much i pray.”

“kidding.” maybe not really. it’s not that spencer would have even minded if he did, as far as seungjin was concerned, the other male might be the most easy-going guy in the world. or in myeongcho, at least. guess not being born in a town plagued by death and murder had its own perks. then again ignorance was not exactly a bliss, either. 

he took spencer’s hand in two of his own as he pulled the blood stained bandages off, dropping them into the box of medical waste next to the examination table. “i think that the next time you come in, you better come in with the shard still in your hand.” he was more careful with the hand than he wanted to be, but less than he should have been. he figured spencer should suffer at least a little bit for torturing him. dipping a piece of cotton into desinfectant, he then cleaned the wound, continuing to lecture him. “just so you know, if you get nerve damage, it’s not my fault, but your own since you pulled out the bottle yourself. and i might amputate just so you don’t show up every single week here with a new trauma. i’m actually surprised you still have limbs.”

there’s not more he can do than send a quick text at a time when people are screaming, being torn apart by gang members more ruthless than he could ever be. in part, he feels responsible for the chaos; it was lynx that caused all of this, and though he wasn’t directly involved in any of it, he knew he had to help people. he had to help people because he was to be a doctor, too.

when you enter medical school, the first thing they tell you is you can’t help a person if you aren’t first safe yourself. you can’t help someone when you are in distress as well. and as seungjin tries to pull as many people out of the way, as he tries to save the bleeding limbs and torsos, he finds himself worrying about the two girls that have been in his life for as long as he can remember.

but eunmi hates him, and she’s not the type of person to be up so early. so he can push her to the back of his mind for now. seolhyun, on the other hand, can be anywhere at any time, which doesn’t help seungjin ease his mind. catching a quick breath between helping people, he manages a phone call to seolhyun.

she doesn’t pick up.

he tries again ten minutes later, then fifteen minutes later.

an hour later.

two, three, four hours later.

no answer.
