Black Dog Mine Chapter 10: Management

Severus landed cleanly in the tiny cobbled yard behind the Leaky Cauldron. Harry did not. The boy staggered immediately upon arrival, one hand flying to his mouth as his face drained of color. Severus caught his elbow before he could pitch forward. “Steady.” Harry squeezed his eyes shut. “I am steady,” he gritted out. “You are green.” “Thought I’d try Slytherin colors.”

Harry looked at him. "Which part?"

"The parchment." Hagrid stared into his mug. The fire popped. Fang shifted his head in Harry's lap and sighed. "I was there. When he signed."

The room went quiet. Not the quiet of people choosing silence. The quiet of people recognising that a thing was arriving and making room for it.

Ron put his tea down. Hermione's hands stopped on her mug.

"I held you," Hagrid told him. "In the bank. While the goblins sorted the paperwork and Dumbledore sat there being Dumbledore and McGonagall sat there being McGonagall and your dad—" He stopped. He drank. He put the mug down and wrapped both hands around it again. The mug looked like a thimble in his fingers. "He was twenty, Harry. You need to understand that. He was twenty years old and four days ago he'd been a spy and now he was standing in a bank and Lily's will said 'keep him safe' and the bond settled and that was it. That was the whole rest of his life decided."

Harry listened. The fire was crackling. Fang's head was warm and heavy in his lap. Ron was not moving. Hermione's tea was untouched.

"He took you from me," Hagrid continued. "Not — not like that. I mean I was holding you and he took you. And you were tiny. Three months. Wrapped in that blanket, the one with the scorch on the corner from — from the house." Hagrid's voice caught on the word. "And he held you. And he didn't know how. His hands were wrong, Harry, he was holding you like you were made of glass, and you were three months old and you didn't care, you just looked at him."

He stopped. He was crying. He was attempting to manage it with the same futility he always attempted to manage it with, which was no futility at all because Hagrid did not cry quietly and had never pretended to. He pulled a handkerchief from his pocket that was the size of a small tablecloth and pressed it to his face and breathed into it and put it away.

"Ain't never seen a man fall in love with a baby that fast." He wiped his eyes with the back of his hand. "Don't tell him I said that."

I had the goofiest Snape dream last night --

I was a student at Hogwarts. Apparently a Gryffindor, though a bunch of my friends were Ravenclaws. And apparently I was tip-top of Professor Snape's shit list. And proud of it?

There was something going on in the Great Hall, so all the students had to eat in classrooms in small groups with teachers. Snape had claimed a classroom right across from the Great Hall, so as we were walking away from reading the announcement and trying to decide where we were going to eat, I spotted an extra place at Snape's table.

I have no idea what dream-me was trying to accomplish, but I went in and took the seat. My friends followed, hissing that there was room with Flitwick or Trelawney instead, but I just plopped myself down at the foot of the table with this absolute shit-eating grin because I knew my mere presence would drive Snape mad.

Most of my friends moved on to another classroom when faced with Snape and a handful of Slytherin upperclassmen, but one of the boys refused to leave me there on my own, and he just up and stole another student's chair when they got up to grab something from across the room. Snape was completely unimpressed and only conjured another chair for his student. He seemed determined to ignore me and my friend completely.

Snape started serving the meal, but then my friend started bickering with his neighbor. Quiet at first, then a little louder. Then a jinx under the table. Then a retaliatory hex. And the whole time, the rest of the table is trying to pretend this isn't happening. I kicked my friend surreptitiously at one point, but he ignored me. We were all just passing mashed potatoes and making small talk and stuff.

Then someone at the table cast Sonorus at my friend, and he was SO LOUD, and Snape couldn't ignore it any longer. In the full-on fight that broke out then, somehow the Slytherin my friend was fighting with ended up with river reeds for hair, and my friend had been transfigured into a giant teddy bear, and one of the portraits had gone to get Dumbledore, and a store cupboard burst open, showering us all in rolls and rolls of tulle in about a million different colors.

Dumbledore arrived as I was busily putting out candles so they wouldn't catch the tulle on fire, and Snape was absolutely irate. He was bound and determined that this was entirely my fault, but when Dumbledore asked what I had done, all he could say was that I'd sat in an empty chair.

"She knows what she was doing," he kept saying.

Meanwhile, I was rolling up tulle with a couple of Slytherin Prefects and untangling it from around a suit of armor.

"She appears to be cleaning," Dumbledore answered serenely. "That is not a crime, Severus. Nor is sitting down to a meal among -- er -- friends."

And then Snape was on about something to do with my wand and how this was clearly all my doing because it had a unicorn core, and the tulle was made from unicorn hair. I was absolutely baffled by this accusation, because I hadn't had my wand out at all. But then it was decided that I had had an accidental magical outburst in response to the fight.

"And really, Severus," Dumbledore argued, "that seems to indicate a rather strong distaste for the way that events unfolded, rather than delight."

And Snape argued that I was clearly unstable, if I was still having magical outbursts at my age.

Dumbledore only nodded, and Snape kept on. Talking about remedial lessons on focus and control, mental discipline, etc. He was totally angling to get me about a million detentions, but Dumbledore, being the absolute shit that he is, chose to interpret his maneuvering as a strong desire to teach me occlumency and wandless magic on Saturdays for the rest of term.

The dream broke up a bit then, but I did get a glimpse of Snape ordering me to clean something for Filch by wandless magic (I broke it and got a detention), levitate a replacement pane of glass by wandless magic (I broke that, too, and ended up in the Hospital Wing), and stop a bludger with wandless magic (I exploded it, which I choose to see as an improvement; it exploded in Snape's office, so he disagreed).

One final image before I woke up was of Dumbledore winking at me in the Great Hall, and me grinning back and turning his pumpkin juice into vinegar wandlessly. He drank it and spluttered and laughed as he wiped his face with a napkin. Snape eyed him sourly, then glared at me across the room before I turned his pumpkin juice to vinegar as well. He glared again and turned my salad into lawn clippings, making Dumbledore laugh some more. It makes me think Dumbledore and I were somehow in cahoots the entire time, plotting to get me these lessons from Snape. Why? I have no idea. But it did make for an entertaining dream.

I’m gonna give two option cause I’m cool and mysterious

OPTION 1:

amnesia fic with established severitus but Harry loses all his memories of after severitus happens (this is hard to explain, but basically if the severitus happened in fourth year, he forgets everything from fourth year and on)

I think it would be really fun and angsty to explore how both of the boys feel, Severus being reminded of how he mistreated his son and Harry finding out that he finally has a family, but it’s by a man who he believes hates him and he doesn’t even remember his family

You can decide if he does or doesn’t get his memories back but I do lowkey want a good Severus (which if this is established severitus, isn’t THAT unbelievable) so maybe throw in a nice sorry from Severus and like a “ you’re my son that never changes, memories or no”

OPTION TWO:

Amnesia fic but Severus (cool and mysterious and I think I lowkey prefer this one but you decide because you’re writing this bullshit) loses his memories of everything after severitus (again if it happened in fourth year, he forgets everything fourth year and onward)

I see this entirely full of angst with Severus being fully convinced that Harry is crazy and that there’s never happened and that he’s “the spoiled Potter brat who is just like his father.” I would like is you made the spell(and/or the reason for his amnesia manipulate reality)as well to erase all evidence of Harry’s existence from Severus’ home. So it’s more evidence against poor Harry. Harry is essentially desperate trying to figure out a solution so that he can have his dad back but nothing is working until finally he just breaks down and it turns out a strong emotional response was what was needed to access the memories again and then Severus is just like oh fuck my son is sad. Harry realizes that he has his dad back, which gives him a bigger mental breakdown.

And then we can explore like an apology from severance and trying to get back to where they were and trying to get Harry’s stuff back and yada yada yada and la la la la la la

I actually had both of these ideas in mind and I was going to make a post about it so thanks for stealing that for me (this is a jokeeeeeeee 🎶🎶🎶I don’t careeeeeeee🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶I’ll do anything for my friendsssssss🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶)

I know I said I’d prefer the second option, but I feel like that one deserves a bit of a longer work to maximize angst and I would cry with joy if you wrote either of these

Ok so this has been sitting in my ask box for a while, but I want to get my basic outline for this out before I write the whole thing because that will take FOREVER due to my other WIPs and generally inability to write anything quickly.

SO

The severitus happens pre 3rd and during 3rd year

Harry's fall during the third year Quidditch Match of Near-Death Experiences was a LOT worse than in the books.

Severus, who was obviously watching his son's game, had to choose between catching Harry or driving away the dementors.

Obviously, he catches Harry because hitting the pitch from that high up would result in a severe concussion at LEAST

Harry is exposed to the Dementors for quite some time

blah blah blah change lore to make it where the soul is made up entirely of core memories

The dementors get at and steal his most recent core memory: his time spent growing and becoming Severus' son

When harry wakes up in the hospital wing, it quickly becomes clear that he doesn't know what's going on at all

the last thing he remembers is being at the Dursleys

he has no idea why he's at Hogwarts or what has happened to him

Severus tries to comfort his son, but Harry only looks at him with fear and hate, just like the beginning of the summer

This hurts him, obviously, but he does not leave Harry's side

Harry mellows out a bit when he sees that Ron and Hermione are totally chill with Snape when they come to visit

Classes are put on hold for a few weeks and students are confined to the castle while Dumbledore tries to get the Dementors removed (Severus made a HUGE fuss)

Harry stays with Severus in his quarters (Harry HATES this) during it

Eventually, Harry asks Snape why he even cares, since he can't remember him

Severus says something deep and emotional about how Harry is still his son, no matter if he remembers him or not (Is this fic an allegory for dementia???)

This is the turning point where their relationship starts to grow back

Severus helps Harry catch back up with all the school he's forgotten, Harry slowly gains back the trust that they had previously built

Harry never gets his memories back, but Severus shows him his memories of the summer so that he knows what went on. Harry cries several times, at every Severitus milestone (shopping trip, comfort after nightmare, help through a panic attack, birthday party, etc)

Eventually, they go on as normal, and Severus is immensely grateful that Harry accepted him back

The house felt too small, as if someone had run a wire through the rooms and pulled it tight. It was anticipation, Sirius told himself firmly. Not panic. Just anticipation. A battered textbook flew past his shoulder, and Sirius was forced to amend that — maybe a little panic. He huffed indignantly at Harry, who apologized absently, still digging determinedly through his trunk. His movements were sharp, but still coordinated. Still decisive. Merely the movements of a teenager trying to accomplish three hours’ worth of sorting in twenty minutes, after falling asleep doing homework past midnight and oversleeping that morning.

Harry, actually in a lot of pain and really very tired: Er, what?

Severus: Tell me where it hurts, you idiot boy, so I can make it better!

"Glare at me all you like, but you will finish that water."

"Slowly now, or it will upset your stomach. Did you not learn this lesson the last time?"

I just had the WORST BEST thought!

I haven't quite decided whether Harry will take Divination in Black Dog Mine, but can you IMAGINE Trelawney's reaction if they do tea leaves?

"The Grim, my dear, the Grim," cried Professor Trelawney, who looked shocked that he hadn't understood. "The giant, spectral dog that haunts churchyards! My dear boy, it is an omen—the worst omen—of death!"

"You mean Snuffles? Nah, he's alright. Just downstairs if you want to meet him."

Cue Trelawney storming into the staff room to demand to know what Severus is thinking, letting this continue, like the world's most ridiculous parent-teacher conference. And Snape being just utterly bewildered, like

"There is currently a werewolf standing right behind you, Sibyl. My dog should be the least of your concerns." His lip curled. "At least the mutt is house trained."
