(Yes I'm sending another ask)
I heard someone say that the Malfoys were the best parents, what are your thoughts on this? And could you make a rank from the best parents to the worst?
Interesting. Got me thinking.
The Malfoys do love their son, but they're actions still put their son in danger. Even still they rank higher than most.
Hermione's parents and Hagrid's father I'd rank highly. They don't have any red flags that I can recall.
Hermione's parents are accepting and supportive of their daughter, they go with her to Diagon Ally, even though they're completely out of they're depth there. Hermione appears safe, comfortable and happy in her home life.
And Hagrid's father was a single parent to a half giant son in a time when giants were treated as lesser beings and raised his son with a healthy mindset about his identity. Again, nothing concerning, seems a solid parent.
Xenophilius Lovegood I don't know enough about to make an absolute call, but he does love his daughter and will go to any lengths to keep her safe.
Molly and Arthur, I have mixed feelings on. They certainly love their kids, but I question having so many children when are stretched financially and apparently having children until they had a daughter. Both of those are questionable decisions to me. Being able to provide for your children and being accepting of them are two big markers for a good parent in my mind.
Also, I'm not a fan of the "You must have this socially acceptable job and socially acceptable appearance" attitude she pushes. Her kids had ambitions and unique talents, and she prefers "Cut your hair and get a government job". I know from her perspective she means well, but it's not a healthy attitude to my view.
Neville's grandmother and extended family make my blood boil. His grandmother made him use his father's wand, which was detrimental to his magic ability and his learning. The poor kid was a nervous wreck before he even got to Hogwarts from the pressure he was put under.
And his uncle, risking Neville's life, endangering him to scare the magic out of him. That family would rather risk a small child drowning or falling to his death rather than have no magical ability. The Wizarding World needs CPS.
The Dursley's again, they love their son, but they're love is detrimental to him too. Dudley's health is in danger from his parent's indulgence, he has no boundaries, no life lessons. A big part of being a good parent is guiding your child into becoming a functional, healthy adult. The Dursley's love Dudley, but again, it's a toxic love that's actually harming him.
I think I'd rank the Malfoys in between the Weasley's and the Longbottoms. There's no doubt they love their son and, in the end, they try to keep him safe. But they taught him toxic behaviour and brought him into an environment that was a danger to his safety.
