I just knocked out 8.5k words in one single day for a chapter update because of one reader leaving one of the most absurdly endearing comments I’ve ever gotten. That is unheard of levels of productivity for me.

My favorite thing about fanfic authors is they can identify any gap in a canon timeline where characters are offscreen and exploit the ever living fuck out of it

I have a lot of problems with equating fanfics with the use is AI in your 'creative' process because it is not even remotely comparable. Building upon a preexisting work of fiction with your own fucking brain requires you actually interact with it in some meaningful way, requires you to think about it with SOME level of criticality. Generating slop does not.
People who write fanfiction inevitably acknowledge source material for what it is and build on it. At times fanfiction deviates so strongly from source material it's somewhat unrecognizable and even that is nowhere NEAR generating some bullshit with your poopensloppenmaker and not JUST because, as a fanfic writer, you are absolutely allowed to do your own fucking world building (this is so self evident to anyone who has ever read fanfiction btw but again, OP hasn't done this) but also because the entire POINT of it is to craft your own rendition of something that caters to a new audience and conveys a different point entirely (even if sometimes that point is 'haha I'm gay and writing smut') (also, again, the original work is invariably credited as such)
Using AI is theft. Theft primarily of intellectual property and the only reason the law struggles to classify it as such is because the physical equivalent of this would be robbing the Louvre, blending all their paintings up into a sludge, and throwing that shit at a canvas. Small creators that are victimized by this do not have the capability to defend themselves, but companies like Disney do and are working on it (allegedly? That's a whole seperate post I cba to make)
Another thing: under the 'fanfiction as a growth hack' subheading it really clicked for me that this absolute tool has no idea what the hell they're talking about because who the fuck is profiting from writing fanfic???? What fucking growth what the fuck are you on????
Of course with how things have recently shifted in the popular canon people have tried to monetize fanfiction but this has historically not been the case at all. Ao3 (my beloved) has literally NO algorithm it's a fucking archive site, you just post what you want and the audience that LOOKS FOR IT reads it. That's the whole point, creative expression.
AI will never ever be able to replace that because there's nothing creative about it. You may have an idea but the second you shove it through chatGPT's tight anus it's not really yours anymore.
My tldr: point of this is fanfic doesn't 'save' you from the grind of coming up with new shit (dumbass), it's a way to build a community with *people* that share the same interests, that have the same ideas or fantasies for characters that other humans created and that want to talk about them.

The entire POINT of AI is a crude amalgamation and permutation of other people's work, that is literally all it does. YOU are standing on stacks of work that was _stolen_ from actual people to train your environmentkiller 1000 machine with every prompt you enter. Don't you fucking dare call that at all comparable to writing fucking fanfiction. Fuck you 👍
