I do think a problem with left movements at the moment is that they don't really speak to people they kinda just yell at them and put themselves in the way of what they're doing in an attempt to jam the cogs of the big machine rather than like, try and connect with the rest of the population or understand their needs and struggles
i really pride myself on my ability to get on with most kinds of people, but man there are a lot of performance enhancing drugs in this field. hanging out with a bunch of weed smokers and they're impossible to annoy and laugh at things that aren't that funny. its like a 100% buff
it can't just be "inconsiderate" to listen to tik tok at full volume on a train, it has to be a crime worthy of public execution. alternatively, only a foaming-at-the-mouth fascist would find it annoying to have to listen to, so maybe you should kill yourself for not appreciating it
so much compassion has its wellspring in guilt. much compassion is genuine and in this world compassion is a great balm, but it is also like, something a guilty person has to do to feel good about themselves. a lot of requests for people to be more compassionate are really requests for you to become this kind of bitch and get your substance from others, absorb their mistakes, lift the whole world's weight off everyone always.
hanging out on tumblr has me quite wary of that whole drive. a lot of people who genuinely require compassion are quite adept at inducing guilt (you see how good charities are at it?), and social systems that select for kindness can also select for guilt.
After years of living in the adulting world, I think I’ve come to a realization: Manners exist to guide you to good conduct even when you’re in a bad mood.
When you’re happy, when you’re feeling generous, when you’re pleased with your gift or your service or your outcome, it’s easy to be nice. It’s easy to tip the waiter well when you’ve had a good day. It’s easy to thank the teller or the clerk when you got what you wanted out of the transaction. It’s easy to smile and chit-chat with strangers on the road when you’re in a good mood.
It’s hard to tip the waiter when you didn’t enjoy your food. It’s hard to thank the clerk for their time when you’ve just been told there’s a problem with their account and they weren’t able to fix it for you. It’s hard to think of something nice to say when your aunt gave you a crappy sweater you neither need nor want. It’s hard to be nice to people when you’ve had a shitty day. It’s HARD.
That’s what manners are for. Scripts and phrases that you learn by rote to say when you can’t think of a single nice or good thing to say from your own volition. Yes, they’re scripted. Yes, the sentiment is empty. But the scripts work in every situation, and the emptiness provides a buffer between your own unhappiness and the rest of society. The fact that they are empty means that they are not heavy to carry.
Because most of the time, it’s not the waiter’s fault that the food you ordered wasn’t what you expected. It’s not the clerk’s fault that your account is overdrawn. It’s not the fault of the barista or the stranger on the subway that you got fired today or your favorite aunt died. But even when you can’t summon a smile or a cheery word, you can still have manners, because they will serve you the same in sunshine or rain.
I wish I had more to say about Nancy than “it’s good”, but….it’s good.
absolutely no sympathy for people who only talk about souls to demand a pause button

of course you’re trustworthy, every time there’s a conflict you go emotionally numb and pretend to be perfectly rational. people love that.

never a starker difference than the auto subs streamed on a pirate site vs the subs on a special edition you paid for, I swear to god. downloading subs for a torrent is a different matter though, that can be a pain, but anything beats the hell out of the paid stuff.

we really can’t overstate how damaging it has been to indoctrinate the public with the idea that if they let themselves eat as much as they want, they’ll eat too much. human bodies, when permitted over the long term to eat as much as they want, actually get really, really good at calibrating their hunger and satiety, and will over time eat exactly the right amount for themselves. the common conception of a balanced eater as a minimal or restrained eater is absolutely wrong. balanced eaters eat quite a lot (compared to diet cultural ideas about right intake amounts), and they do so consistently and permanently. healthy, balanced eating isn’t some tightrope walk, it’s a gigantic net of total permission to eat.

["Because it's just you, doing the work! But like, I did that! Cuz, as you know, the weights don't lift themselves. And that was all me, all me. Cuz it's just you! Doing the work! And it was the first time I felt a sense of achievement that I could see. Working a day at the petshop, doing all the work, you achieve that day and you leave, and you're like, okay, I know, I cleaned a million cages, but this was... look what I've changed in myself. And the muscles were one thing, and the least important and revelatory thing, it was the mind change that was the real lesson, the real gift, it's like I have some confidence, I have an idea that I deserve to be respected. And if it takes some physicality to get your mind to that place— 'cuz you should be thinking you deserve some respect, because hopefully you'll give it to get it, and by giving it you'll allow other people to get it, so they can get it, so it's a nice win/win/win/win thing. But you have to dig yourself and respect yourself before you can— and I didn't have that, I just had fear. I feared my teachers, feared my father, feared the kids in my neighborhood, so I was obedient and kind of cowering, which isn't respect, it's just fear. And you're pliant. You'll do what you're told, not out of mutual respect, but I don't want you to yell, I don't want you to hit, I don't want you to humiliate— that's the worst, is the humiliation. And so Mr. Pepperman gave me this incredible gift, and it's sounds New Agey, but he gave me to me. He allowed me to see what I can do, by caring, and by being a coach, like an older brother, or a scout master, you know, that older guy who says "Hey son, you're alright, do this."]

This may be a lot but would you be willing to explain a bit on how you organised the growing situation for your balcony and the tomatoes? I’m looking to expand my growth attempts as I’ve only ever successfully “grown” basil (meaning keeping the supermarket bought plant alive and grow from there). Did you need a formal trellis? Or can it bush?
There's types of tomato that grow in little bushes, but in my experience you can also just "top" your tomato or pepper plants at the height you want them at. I have bamboo sticks that I put next to my pepper and tomato plants when they get too tall and tie them to it with twist ties.
Everything on my balcony is scavenged from the side of the road (except a few plastic pots and my hanging planters) including a trellis I found! It does work really well for tomatoes, but its not necessary.
A pic from last year showing the tomatoes growing on my trellis #mytrellis:
I actually usually let the plants grow way too tall, if you keep them smaller they will start producing more fruit earlier, cause theyre not putting all their energy into growing a huge plant.
A pic from this year of my peppers being unnecessarily tall, and a look at the bamboo stick holding the plants up so it doesnt collapse under the weight of the peppers:
I even scavenged one of those fancy glass geometric terraria and a concrete buddha head to give my balcony garden that middle-class suburban housewife je ne sais quoi:
Anyway, now i keep my peppers inside on the windowsill (and thats where i start growing my tomatoes as well until they are a bit bigger), and grow tomatoes in whatever container outside.
I also have some hanging planters where I grow basil and other herbs like you do, from a supermarket plant. Last year and this year I've also added some rocket and other lettuce, which is super easy to grow from seed and i love the fact you can just walk onto your balcony and get some leaves of lettuce for your sandwich any time you like.
