“Did you hear about Clan Lavellan?”
The man behind the fruit stall bore Falon'din's vallaslin. It was faded, scars and wrinkles dancing across its lines as it sank back into his tan skin. He lifted his head in recognition at the name, and Merrill tucked her face deeper into her cloak. She turns an apple in her hand, notes the dents in its skin.
"They were here just recently, no? Not three months ago," He said, his voice slow and weighed down by the years, "Just outside the city. Their Keeper was kind enough to trade me some herbs from the Silent Plains."
Merrill had heard the name before; part of her training as First meant she'd have to know every Clan that attended the last Arlathven, so she might be better prepared for the next one. As another Clan in the Marches, Lavellan came up frequently.
The name of their Keeper and their First eluded Merrill at the time. It'd been too long.
"You knew them then?" The woman's tone was conspiratorial, like whatever she meant to say was bleaker than a loose bit of gossip.
"Aye," He says, and for a moment Merrill could see the grief etched into every line on his skin, as if Falon'din himself had come to cast his shadow over them. He knows, in the hollow of his heart, but still he asks: "What happened?"
That was the first time Merrill had heard of the name Inquisitor Lindiranae Lavellan.
"Slaughtered, the lot of them."
I will say playing a DnD game set in Thedas is a great balm to the death of the series. The collaborative storytelling of ttrpgs is the closest thing I've gotten to how it feels to play Dragon Age.
I highly recommend anyone else who is missing the series try to organize a game to play with your other DA fans. Sheryl Chee said the series is ours now, and it really is.
Dragon Age has it's own ttrpg, but if your more familiar with 5e and want something similar, there are people who have worked on conversions. Tantervale 9:21 is a wiki for someone's personal 5e Dragon Age campaign, and they've been kind enough to give everyone access to their class and race conversions for 5e.
The best part is you get to choose what part of the world and what stories you want to focus on! It's a lot of fun.
HELLO THIS IS US THIS WAS OUR CAMPAIGN!! we played Tantervale 9:21 for several years, from 2020 to 2024, and it was an incredible campaign by our wonderful DM and storyteller gem (who i'll tag if they lets me lol) and they worked tirelessly on this conversion and the campaign for the years we played.
i will say playing in our campaign is why the series' death didn't hit me as hard. because i know how great Dragon Age can be when we build stories together. the worldbuilding is vast and our sandbox. we could do whatever we wanted with it, and we did. i fully encourage everyone else grieving the series to do the same. the conversion is specific to our campaign so it could definitely be more broad, we tweaked and messed around as we played. i don't know if gem will pick up the conversion again as they're a very busy fancy scientist person now, but we put it up so everyone could see it and use it themselves. its a real labor of they love and ill be so glad if more people find joy in it
i still run the occasional oneshot using this conversion, so if anyone in the notes is down to clown and play some of our Dragon Age 5E conversion, feel free to message me <3 maybe we could get a party together

So a new necromancer huh?
Something that I've noticed about Lucanis' design is that on his belt/hip area he has a bunch of what appears to be buttons/pins, which is, really quite funny to me. He has to have put them on himself. I have no idea why he'd do that besides fashion. And they're right on design theme for him. I love him
All the Dragon Age Veilguard news got me pumped up so I just had to draw all the companions ✨

I do have a piece of writing advice, actually.
See, the first time I grew parsnips, I fucked it up good. I hadn't seen parsnips sprouting before, right, and in my eagerness I was keeping a close eye on the row. And every time I saw some intruding grass coming up, I twitched it right out, and went back to anticipating the germination of my parsnips.
But it turns out parsnips take a bit longer than anything else I'd ever grown to distinguish themselves visually. It's just the two little split leaves, almost identical to a newly seeded bit of kentucky bluegrass when they first come up, and they take a good bit to establish themselves and spread out flat before the main stem with its first distinctive scallopy leaf gets going.
I didn't get any parsnips, not that year, because I'd weeded them all out as soon as they showed their faces, with my 'ugh no that's grass' twitchy horticulture finger.
The next year, having in retrospect come to suspect what had happened, I left the row alone and didn't weed anything until all the sprouts coming up had all had a bit to set in and show their colors, and I've grown lots of parsnips since. They're kind of a slow crop, not a huge return, but I like them and watching them grow and digging them up, and their papery little seeds in the second year, if you don't harvest one either on purpose or because you misjudged the frost, so it's worth it.
Anyway, whenever I see someone stuck and struggling with their writing who's gotten into that frustration loop of typing a few words, rejecting them, backspacing, and starting again, I find myself thinking, you gotta stop weeding your parsnips, man.
