Long time fan. It doesn’t make any sense. That’s the point I think for lots of us. It’s been clear their love has been canon for a long time. During season 12 Castiel thinks he is dying and it appears he’s moments from death so he looks at Dean and says I love you, seconds later he turns to face Sam and their mother Mary and says I love all of you. So for reasons that are beyond me people are able to look at that and say Cas didn’t mean it romantically, we now know he clearly did, because of the way he said I love all of you after. However that means that his love for Dean is separate and different from his love for the rest of the Winchester family, I don’t see how it can be interpreted any differently. You might be able to argue that their, and I’m quoting Castiel here, ‘profound bond’ is only platonic but this scene does not exist in a vacuum.
There are innumerable other scenes and moments throughout their entire history on the show that makes it clear they care deeply for each other stretching back to Cas’ earliest appearances. At first I think the feelings were one sided on Cas’ side, though their electric chemistry was present from day one, but that makes sense since Cas literally touched Dean’s soul and raised him from Hell. The other angels said on multiple occasions that the moment Castiel laid hands on Dean in Hell, he was lost and began to fall.
The only difference with the recent scene is that Dean and Cas were alone and Cas believed he was about to die with no chance of recovery. There was no room for misinterpretation by the audience and by Dean who is last seen sobbing on the floor after Cas is taken in a way we’ve never seen him cry before.
