Well well well… six of crows fans… you know which scene this is? 😏😏😏. I’m sure you do. This is the Kanej bathroom scene from Crooked Kingdom by @lbardugo. I actually have a love-hate relationship with this illustration so please, be nice with me haha, since I know I took some liberties. I really can’t wait for the TV show and all the promotional images are driving me crazy. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

i love the general consensus in grishaverse fandom that kanej is the best ship throughout all the books. no ship wars, autonomy for both characters, mutual respect and pining, knowing what they each deserve and staying independent, supporting each other's trauma. iconic of them, really.

a kanej aspect from the books i cannot stop thinking about is the fact that even though inej recognizes kaz has issues/trauma when it comes to touching skin, she doesn’t let that convince her into settling for a subpar relationship and being with him out of pity; BUT at the same time, she still doesn’t invalidate his trauma

it’s such a layered and complex dynamic between the two, and for the most part it’s largely unspoken. inej has been working with kaz for what, 2-3 years in six of crows? she knew when she got shoved in a truck full of people with him that he needed space, and she tried her best to accomodate that for him even with her limited capabilities. she knows he wears his gloves all the time not for the sake of effect, but for a real reason she knows he’d never tell her.

so when he asks her to stay in ketterdam with him, and she essentially tells him she can’t be with him when he’s so adverse to human touch like this, she KNOWS he has a reason. she knows it’s out of his control, but she still knows that if she settles and stays with him out of guilt or pity, she won’t be happy. she doesn’t give him sympathy, and she doesn’t try to understand (mostly due to him never telling her anything about his trauma and never giving her a chance to understand), but she still doesn’t invalidate him. she’s not cruel or unwilling to ever try with him, she’s just straightforward in that he needs to meet her somewhere in the middle for a relationship to be worth it for her.

maybe i just haven’t read enough YA in my lifetime, but i have never seen a mutual pining romance be this multi-layered and complex, yet still so realistic. inej and kaz almost never verbally talk about the intricacies of their relationship. in fact they hardly address there’s anything between them at all, and i feel like that’s what a lot of people in their positions would do. but nonetheless, there is so much the reader can infer from just their internal monologue in their written perspectives and the few confrontations they’ve had concerning their relationship. it’s so incredibly well-done, and i don’t know HOW they’re gonna replicate this in the show. if they don’t, i’d get it because i feel like this sort of underlying tension is way easier to write out in prose than depict in acting.

the point is: kanej is amazingly complicated and multi-dimensional and i absolutely love these two together thank you for coming to my TED talk have a scrumptious day
