Love how tumblr has its own folk stories. Yeah the God of Arepo we’ve all heard the story and we all still cry about it. Yeah that one about the woman locked up for centuries finally getting free. That one about the witch who would marry anyone who could get her house key from her cat and it’s revealed she IS the cat after the narrator befriends the cat.

The statistics they're looking at to determine that people on snap shouldn't be using soda is unfortunately skewed because they're not looking into WHY soda is being bought more than, say, milk. They're seeing the purchase rates and noticing the differences and how high the soda rate is but they're not stopping and asking themselves what could be the situational reason this is happening.

This kind of thing happens a lot actually where people are so used to looking at the broad scope they forget to follow the line back to the source.

Now... here in the US, one very big reason I saw kids drinking sodas while working as a teacher was because parents would deliberately send it with them. Kids are extremely overworked in school these days without a moments peace, constantly doing busy work, exhausted from being overstimulated all day, and forced to do work way ahead of their actual cognitive learning ability that previous generations didn't have (kindergarteners should not be learning fractions and 3rd graders should not be learning pre algebra. I learned fractions in 3rd grade. My mother learned it in 8th. Theres no reason to do this ither than to burden and pvertax kids brains but i digress), and they're also constantly under the threat of potential school violence because there's no gun regulations and so they need the caffeine and are using it to self medicate the exhaustion.

Also, most of the average parents in the US are currently struggling financially, which with the constant shitshow of unprecidented times were trudging through. The combination of caffeine and sugar is at its most basic the cheapest form of adhd medication, and it's also tasty and makes for a nice treat even if it's unhealthy.

At the end of the day, maybe instead of solving all the problems at the top of the issue by banning this or that we find out WHY it's happening and make a plan to alleviate the underlying cause instead of banning kids from having fun stuff at birthday parties.

I just feel like it's not fair to dictate what you can and can't have when food is involved. In CA you can but hot/precooked meals with snap benefits. You can't do that in AZ, NV or other states. How shitty is that for people who have no way to cook their meals?

But yeah, I firmly believe it's unfair to micromanage people's food choices.
