I too struggle with non hockey player Shane because it’s just such a big part of who he is, but I think I have a couple of ones I enjoyed that are non hockey aus (don’t mind some descriptions are a little less detailed, some I read quite a while ago)

Also relationship reveal my absolute beloved!!! I love reading all the different way people write the relationship reveals and the reactions!!! I have been spawn camping the Hollanov relationship reveal and coming out fics. I haven’t seen these before, YESSSS!!!

P.s. I have only been able to read the WAG Shane one so far (“Where is My Husband!” By shaneviews) and oh misunderstanding how I love thee when you don’t cause any actual consequences (just a bunch of classmates coming to the wrong conclusions). I love the drama of a very public and silly reveal!! Also there is more fics in the verse which I will be enjoying :)

the only non-hockey player Shane Hollander fic I will read is Route Kanata 96 because in it he only stopped due to an injury and he's deeply fucked up about it. like yes Shane Hollander would lose all sense of his identity if he had to quit hockey.

Context: anon is referring to this post I made where I talked about how it feels strange to read a fic where Shane Hollander isn’t a hockey player

I am glad to see that someone else understands what I was talking about/feeling. And you are so right anon!! if Shane had hockey stripped away from him, the character arc that man would have to go through to find himself again would be absolutely brutal.

Especially since I looked up the fic (haven’t been able to read it yet though) and it seems like the injury happens before anything with Ilya which means he wouldn’t even have Ilya by his side. At least not in the same capacity as if it was set during the TLG timeline. It seems like such an interesting plot line to explore, but also feels like it will break me. (ToT)

I need to preface this by saying, thank you to all the Hollanov fics writers. I love you and I appreciate and my screen time is so high because of you.

Whenever I read AU fics where Shane Hollander is not into hockey/actively playing, I am so thrown off. I am like who is this man?? I have never seen this man before in my life! This is a new character!

SHANE HOLLANDER not playing HOCKEY?!? Genuinely like talking a fish out of water. Ilya not playing hockey, understandable. SHANE THOUGH?!?

Of course there are the no hockey AUs where they both aren’t players and I’m like “ok we are being transported to a different realm; hockey wasn’t an option, got it!”Then there are the ones where Ilya is a hockey player and not Shane. Then I am like “oh, this is the twilight zone”. Truly putting the fiction in fan-fiction.

I do find it fun when those types of fics do try to sneak in that Shane enjoys hockey as a background detail, it’s cute. Now if I encounter a fic where Shane Hollander absolutely despises hockey (which I haven’t yet) I fear I might truly have to mentally prepare myself before reading.

That is not to say I am not enjoying and reading these fics, there is just an adjustment period that I find funny because Shane being the golden boy of hockey has become so ingrained in me. But I got to appreciate everyone’s creativity.

It’s funny to me because I am all for AUs, put the pookies in different environments!! Play with the characters like they are Barbies!! But for some reason the Shane Barbie in my mind comes with a hockey stick included.

If anyone has any recommendations of such AU fics that you enjoyed let me know :) I need some exposure therapy

it's very special to me that as people find out about hollanov they make the obvious assumption (like david) that it's recent, likely that it started up either around the time they were planning their charity or a few months before ilya goes to the centaurs and the ones who think it's been longer think it was like maybe a year prior to the trade probably and that would be 3 years together before they get married aw how sweet and then I like to imagine that ilya makes an anniversary post like "happy one year married, twelve together" and literally everyone in the hockey world is like happy WHAT

the other option for the timeline being made public is that a little after they get outed and married there's like a twitter poll that people are going rabid on where people are voting for how long they think they've been together and the answers range from "they became friends when they made their foundation and then fell in love" to "before the all star game somehow????????" and it becomes a huge thing for days all people are having heated discourse about the actual likelihood of it being x number of years versus y number of years and eventually ilya just tweets out "summer before rookie year" without context which starts MORE discourse

So let’s start from the top.

You can choose to read as a guest or make an account

If you choose to read as a guest:

Yellow box is for archive warnings like major character death. Blue box is the relationship tags ( “/“ for romantic and “&” for platonic) the rest are just additional tags

8. Depends on the fic, but indicates that this fic is apart of a series (click on the series name to access the other works)

9. The stats!! (Self explanatory but let me know if you have questions)

I think everyone develops their own method of scrolling through and finding fics because there are many different routes you can take. You can even use fic finder accounts here on tumblr.

I will walk you through my personal method (Using heated rivalry as my guide because I found this post through that).

So I like ships and reading about ships, so I just look up my ship in the search bar (“hollanov”). Then you will get some related searches. I like to find the Hollanov ship tag “Shane Hollander/Ilya Rozanov” and click on that to see all the fics for that ship.

Now that we have our primary tag we can customize with filters~~~ (click on filters)

Now you can fully customize your experience and results. The include you will mark all the things you WANT see and in exclude you will mark all the things you DON’T WANT to see. Apply those filters and then read to your hearts content.
