First off, Santi, this is complete and utter BS and I’m glad you spoke up and then posted this.
Second, I saw this on my dash, scrolled down, and immediately saw ANOTHER Voltron artist asking people not to repost.
This is fucking bullshit. This is straight up violation of copyright law:
Section 106 of the 1976 Copyright Act generally gives the owner of copyright the exclusive right to do and to authorize others to do the following:
To reproduce the work in copies or phono records;
To prepare derivative works based upon the work;
To distribute copies of the work to the public by sale or other transfer of ownership, or by rental, lease, or lending;
To perform the work publicly, in the case of literary, musical, dramatic, and choreographic works, pantomimes, and motion pictures and other audiovisual works;
To display the copyrighted work publicly, in the case of literary, musical, dramatic, and choreographic works, pantomimes, and pictorial, graphic, or sculptural works, including the individual images of a motion picture or other audiovisual work; and
In the case of sound recordings, to perform the work publicly by means of a digital audio transmission.
Please note that the bolded section doesn’t say ANYTHING about needing for it to be for profit. The creator has the legal right to decide where it is displayed. Period.
It is illegal for anyone to violate any of the rights provided by the copyright law to the copyright holder.
You are violating the law. It’s illegal. What you’re doing is fucking illegal. I know that probably doesn’t scare any reposters, because why should they be scared of these poor, often young artists taking any kind of legal recourse against them? But this is all to make a very clear point:
If you are reposting, you are wrong. You are not entitled to anyone’s art. It is their legal-fucking-right to share their artwork on any public forum without fear of it being used without their permission. They’re not “asking” for it by posting a picture online–that’s the same shitty logic of “did you see what they were wearing? they were asking for it”! You’re trying to pin the blame on the victim.
Literally all you are doing is driving artists away. Quit being whiny, entitled assholes and learn to take some goddamn responsibility. Ask for permission, and if it isn’t granted to you then have enough fucking respect for the artist to back the fuck off.
Especially because some of these fan artists? Are also professionals in the industry. I won’t be at all surprised if, one of these days, one of you shitheads is gonna fuck with the wrong person–someone in the industry who IS going to come down on your ass for legal stuff, with Dreamworks or some other company behind them with enough money and clout to fucking do something about it.
