I like to hc that after a few years (mainly for Haley to become a bit more mature) that the two sisters start something of an indie clothing brand. It's very beach inspired and has 1-2 viral pieces on every mermaidcore pinterest board. Haley sketches the outfits, Emily sews them, then Haley does the product photos. Once it becomes too unmanagable Emily quits working in the Saloon, and they get Sandy on board, eventually turning the Oasis front end into their first brick-and-mortar boutique.

That has an interesting knock on effect for the Valley. I think Sam would be a huge foodie and take up Emily's old job, eventually taking over for Gus while releasing EPs and covers online. By that time I think Vince and Jas would be old enough for jobs and I think Jas would love Sam's job at the library (no Joja here). Penny would probably be hired by the Farmer and their spouse (my pref is Elliott, of course) to teach early education to their kids. Shane would also become the bus driver because I think Pam would have a lot of health issues later from her drinking that would cause her to retire early.

I can always tell in people's bend-over-backwards attitude to justify making aroace characters as active participants in romance and sexuality by going "but they can! You can be those things and do this!" (Of course that is true, but in my experience it tends to be way more complex and full of mixed feeling) that they also probably don't know many (or any) actual aroace people. Or how their romantic life works if they do.

And I understand wanting diversity and nuance in characters and stories, but when your first reflex to a character who is from an already misrepresented and under represented community is to ignore the most common shared trait among them in order to make your characters kiss and whatnot, what is the point? If you don't actually want an aroace character, don't make one at all.

Of course within the community there will be different opinions (which is great), but I am personally so tired of how desperate noncommunity people are to fall over themselves in order to justify why a character who should at the very least have complex thoughts and feelings about romantic and sexual attraction is suddenly very allo about the whole thing.

I'm reading a book that a friend got me from a library sale (which is as you might expect, they're purging books that people aren't reading to make room for new ones that people will), and though it's fiction, it was evidently written as some sort of supportive material for school history. The story has frequent footnotes explaining what some words or prhases mean - words like "enlist", "tavern", "runt", or what "crossing oneself" or "confession" mean in a religious sense. Very common vocabulary that an adult who reads books would know, but which a second-grader probably wouldn't have heard.

So naturally the writing style is very clear and simple, and I don't mind it, every once in a while it's nice and relaxing to read something that doesn't specifically intend to drown a reader in confusing nuance and a constant barrage of overwhelming detail. It's a simple, straightforward story, set in the year 1615, about a 14-year-old basque boy who gets hired onto a whaling ship, and the whole story is told from his perspective.

I'm halfway through it now, and at this point of the story the whaling ship of the story has reached Iceland, and the sailors are weirded out by the local turf houses. Someone voices disbelief that these people would really live underground, like some kind of gnomes, and asks whether these folk are even christian. Someone else, who has actually been this far north before, affirms that they are - of a sort, at least. They are some sort of lutherans. And underground-dwelling heretics or not, they're pretty reliable people to work with.

Considering that the book is written in finnish, for finnish children, who are also lutheran by vast majority, the deeply catholic basque sailors' views of Icelanders are obviously not intended or illustrated as the objective truth. People who are otherwise good, intelligent and well-meaning can be completely ignorant about people whose like they have never met or even heard of before.

This is the level of media literacy that they can confidently expect from children who aren't trusted to know what big words like "apostle" mean.

You may have heard the saying that there are three kinds of cats: cats who know they're cats, cats who think they're people, and cats who don't think at all. And the thing about that last group of cat, is both how obvious it is to tell and how weird the cat's resulting behavior is.

My weirdest cat is Jaxsyn (unfortunately spelled, he came with his legal name), who is a rather large void of a cat and insists on only being percieved in one room of the house. His meow is not dissimilar to Beaker from The Muppets. He will stare at walls and such for long lengths of time. He will run away if he realizes he was been sighted in a room that isn't the room. He will meow and beckon for you to enter the room so that he can be pet. His shape is very noodle like for a cat. He has the biggest, blankest eyes I have ever seen on a cat. I love everything about him, I just don't think he has much of a concept of self, or anything else for that matter.

I guess hot take and kind of political... I actually find Penny's views on children really refreshing ... They made me like her because I have thought that way for a long time. I do think she should be significantly more respectful of people who don't want children, especially having an awful mother herself. It's a huge responsibility and not for everyone; it's also everyone's own choice. It's also uncomfortable to have to make your farmer say smth you may not agree with to get friendship points with her. But the overpopulation thing ... I genuinely think that kind of view often edges on eugenics type thinking when instead we should be making way better use of our resources and not letting capitalism and greed get in the way. I do understand the hate for her though, bc those are really controversial views and unexpected in a cozy farming sim. But I thought that scene was refreshing and it would make sense to decide not to date someone if your views and future goals don't align. If she really wants kids and the farmer doesn't, they're not a good pair.

I really dislike some of her other views but to me they make her more interesting and well written. Her whole self identity seems to revolve around being helpful, so she does stuff like take away George's autonomy when he doesn't want help, and then gets offended and hurt when he doesn't want it. I know people like that, who try so hard to "help" that they take your freedom away and take control of your own life, instead of letting you watch out for your own health. They get pushy with you about your own life because it's "for your good". I hate that about her, but it's a super interesting character flaw. It makes sense with her writing too; her mom was not there for her, so she had to grow up quickly to take care of Pam. Penny has been through a lot and is probably depressed as hell, but instead of being suicidal she copes by always working, always pouring herself out for others, and probably, not taking care of or thinking of herself bc she's been taught by neglect that she doesn't matter unless she's being useful (for example: she says shes not used to such kindness when you give her a loved bday gift); utilitarianism is ingrained in her but only about herself. She doesn't view the kids or her mother as lesser bc they're not useful.

I also don't agree with her views on alcohol but they're very understandable given her life

Anyway those are my rambling thoughts on Penny. She's a weird and interesting character who is probably really mentally ill and hiding it well.

To me, Penny's whole character revolves around her growing up trying to help and please Pam, that she has something of an obsession with being useful and being percieved as kind and altruistic. I also wonder if CA, in making Pam one of the few characters who says anything about their belief in Yoba, intended to give Penny a lot of the mentality pushed on girls growing up in Church. Because while my family stopped going to church when I was about 8, there were so many lessons about "doing the right thing" and none about how the right things change depending on circumstance. "Help people without needing to be asked when you see them struggling, because if you can see them struggling they must need help" kinda mentality, which is very much the way Penny has always read to me. Anticipating the needs of others is also apart of the trauma responce she has from Pam as well.

And that's all evident in how she anticipates George's struggle with the mail and helps. She thinks she's doing a good thing, and to some it is a good thing to help without being asked when we think someone needs help, ie. being a good samaritan. But life doesn't work like that because actions are about more then outcomes.

It's the same thinking with the cleaning cutscene too. She accepts your help because she sees what you are doing as a kind thing that will make the job easier (and I think she actually means her appreciation for the help, instead of accepting because she feels it's "correct"). But Pam comes home and is embarrassed that Penny would let someone else clean their home.

Then with the kid cutscene, I think that her motive for kids is revealed if the farmer answers "I guess so. It's a natural urge." Because she replies, "Yes... the urge to care for something innocent and helpless. It makes sense that we'd feel that." And that feels kinda yucky to me, personally. Because children are so much more then that, who grow into people much more then that. It, just like a lot of the things Penny does, feels like an idylic idea of correctness stemming from complex places irl.

And that's not to say I think that Penny is a bad character, in fact, I think that she's a complex character who is well written from the few things we get about her. But I think that she is too remincent of a kind of person the general fandom doesn't want to interact with a lot irl, which is also how the characters have become Flanderized in both their possitive and negative forms over the past decade.

I never thought I would be so genuinely pissed at my local fire department, but there's a time for everything and boy howdy am I pissed =) and my dog, who's already difficult at this time because of anxiety is even worse.

If someone isn't trying to sell something, isn't offering ill gotten goods for cash, and isn't asking for money in any way, they are not a grifter. You saying people who aren't partaking in those activities are grifters just makes you look like an idiot who's obsessed with real grifters.

I kinda wanna know why the "hot guy" sterotype in manga/manhwa/manhua went from a somewhat tall, noodly, triangle man (affectionate, I love Tsuruga Ren from Skip Beat, lol) to the author definitly doing anatomy studies... but applying them like those old dinosaur drawings do. Like, obviously I'm using some hyperbol, but my point stands.

I think a speedrun focusing specifically on catching the largest size of each fish could be interesting, simply because it's doing something with a generally useless (though I think it may determine the price? Kinda? Idk) stat. But I also think whoever does it would have to supply a lot of the entertainment on their own, because the fishing game would be very boring to sit through for that long.

Technically, you are right. However, (and there's a great reddit post that explains the mechs behind fish size) the things required to get the largest possible fish would net an iridium quality fish, which is obviouslythe highest price a fish can get.

So yeah, size doesn't equal price, but to get the best price it will be a larger fish.
