so ive seen a post about how modern/highschools au fanfics of atla and lok taking place in more western settings is a form of whitewashing and,,, are yall ok?? not to mention some of the same ppl reblogging that thread also love modern au ART even though it doesnt adhere to their standards of what modern au writing should be. can people stop throwing around terms like whitewashing?? its an AU for a reason and stipulating the idea that writing a modern au based on atla/lok that is written in a ‘western way’ is racist/whitewashing is absolute bs. no, someone does not need to do hours and hours of research about a place/culture just to write about the characters of atla/lok in a modern setting. the cultures of the atla universe, despite having many real life cultural influences, does not strictly translate to our own world. there is no such thing as air nomad culture, fire nation culture, etc in our reality. therefore, theres no way to erase said cultures in a modern setting because they dont exist. obviously making the characters white and shit is an absolute NO, but please get it through your head that setting doesnt mean shit in terms of culture. asian people exist outside of asia! asian people exist in the western world! just because a work of fiction is written in an non-asia location featuring primarily asian characters, its not inherently whitewashing. pls take your god/savior complex somewhere else and stop speaking for entire groups as if youre the one who gets to determine what is and isnt ‘whitewashing’. thanks.

yall know that scene at the end of season 1 of lok where korra goes to the edge of the cliff? and the theory that she was going to commit suicide? so lately ive seen a few videos/posts circulating around instagram/tiktok latey on that scene and of course, we got the usual fuckers in the comments going out of their way to bash LoK or korra herself (she rly lives in a lot of ppls heads rent free huh) but then we got the people who say shit like “she should have jumped” or “i wish she had killed herself”. and for what? not liking korra as a character? i get not all ppl who dislike lok and have valid criticisms of the show are like this but holy fuck there were so many comments saying shit like that. as someone whos dealt with my own suicidal thoughts and attempts, what the actual fuck? not sure if im getting upset for no reason other than korra being a big comfort/relatable character but like,, HUH? yea i get its fiction and korra isnt a real character but what kind of scum do you have to be to say shit like “she should have killed herself” simply because you dont like a character?? s1 korra has flaws and makes mistakes, so she automatically should have killed herself? newsflash, youre not edgy for saying shit like that, youre just fucking dumb and insensitive.

i definitely agree theres a lot of valid criticism of lok beyond just disliking korra and korrasami, and when i get a chance i’ll check those vids out (thank you for the recs). i absolutely dont think the series is perfect and theres a variety of issues and criticisms i agree with and i might even make my own post regarding them.

i just wanna clarify my critique post of lily’s video (thats still in the works) is gonna be specific to her video and the points she addresses and not lok criticisms as a whole. my “in defense of” post is gonna be seperate and deal with the broader/overused and commonly regurgitated hate points regarding lok (i.e. things heavily rooted in misogyny, ‘aang bias’, etc) by many people who dont even bother to give lok a chance while simultaneously slandering it. hope that makes sense and clears some things up!

so. 45 minutes into lily’s video and let me just say. i laughed at a few parts from the sheer stupidity and nitpicky-ness of it. then i got pissed off at some other parts too. there are some things i agree with, however a lot of those points are ruined by backtracking and constantly bringing up atla. why is that such a counterproductive move? i’ll tell ya:

LOK IS NOT ATLA AND WAS NEVER INTENDED TO BE.

the constant whining about how korra didnt go on an ‘avatar’s journey’ like aang did is getting fucking annoying. korra doesn’t have an avatar journey because LoK isn’t focused on that aspect of korra’s life. korra’s journey is fundamentally different from aang’s. comparing them and saying “its just lazy writing” is such a dumbass fucking claim because they weren’t trying to write an avatar journey like aang’s in the first place. can this person manage to stop comparing korra and aang’s journeys for one fucking minute? i know you’ll lose 85% of your talking points if you do but its honestly just getting embarassing to listen to.

theres SO MUCH to unpack in this shitshow (alternate title: why i personally think lok is garbage and if you disagree you have no taste). yea it was 2 years ago but with LoK on netflix now its become relevant again. havent even watched the full video yet but the comment section alone is just pretty telling about whats to come. the unprofessionalism alone is laughable, not to mention the odd disproportion of praise to criticism in the comments. almost as if someone deletes a majority of the comments that disagree with the video and just keeps the ones that agree. but anyway, i digress.

Check things from my perspective. I'd been hardcore reading BJ fanfic for 10 years, to the point that I've read just about all of it. I can usually name a story/author just from a vague description of the fic. I like other ships, sure, but I always came back to beetlebabes. Went through some trauma and started writing and got really popular fast. I was checking FF and Ao3 for new content every other day or so. There was a time when we were lucky to get 2-3 decent new fics a year.

So then I hear there's going to be a musical. As a singer, actress, lover of musicals, and hardcore fan, I am ecstatic.

I wait. And wait and wait and wait for over a year, and this. This is what I get. All these fucking brats and queer eye for the dead guy.
