Her smile deepened, overtaking her face like light overtakes a sky after too long a darkness. And Merlin, it undid him.

There were no words he could find to meet her with. No apology. No plea. Nothing clever enough to offer in the wake of what he’d just let her do to him.

So instead, he reached for her hand again. Took it gently into his own. He curled his fingers through hers.

He pressed his lips there, not quickly or hungrily, but in an effort to express something he didn’t have the words for.

She still wasn’t his, he still couldn’t share her… The burn still consuming him was unstoppable and problematic at best… But this push and pull between them, whatever this thing was that they were caught in together…

He simply held her hand as though this thing was the only tether he had left to something real…

‘...something worth burning for.’
