Lovely Little Leiodids.

The moderately rich (c.4000 described species in c.350 genera) beetle family Leiodidae is a favourite of mine. In southeastern Australia most species frequent wet forest/rainforest where they can be common in leaf litter, at carrion, and in a wide variety of fungi and slime molds; these fungivorous or mycophagous taxa are frequently restricted to specific types of fungi including underground truffles (hence a common name of truffle beetles for some) and puffballs.

Many leiodids can be difficult to find by direct habitat searching because of their highly specific and sometimes cryptic habitats. A combination of passive collecting approaches is often the most successful approach to surveying a fauna. The specimens shown here are from Mount Buffalo in central northern Victoria, Australia, were collected using collecting techniques including flight intercept traps, pitfall traps and leaf litter processing.

Included here are specimens of all four subfamilies found in Australia (Camiarinae, Leiodinae, Coloninae & Cholevinae); genera like Colon found across much of the planet, genera with southern ‘Gondwanan’ relationships (Camiarinae), and many Australian endemics.
