If you’re ever feeling bad about the quality of your devotional artwork for Wepwawet (or any other god really), remember that a number of stelae like these were found right alongside much more expensive and well crafted examples. :)
fun games to play at the altar
- how long can I sit here and resist my desire to immediately eat these offerings - can I suppress my coughing after accidentally inhaling this incense smoke long enough to elegantly finish the ritual - how many of these offerings can I carry at once while still being able to close the door to the altar - try and light the candle without burning my thumbnail like I did the past 2 times
This is a lion tree. It’s where lions come from. You have to water them a lot.

Maahes, son of Bast or Sekhmet?
When I started honoring Maahes, I considered him to be the son of Sekhmet. Now, I’m just….. mmh… I have no idea who his mother is.
Personally, I don’t see him as a son of Sekhmet. I’ve never gotten the feeling that he holds an important place for her like Nefertem does. That’s UPG though.
I’ve mostly seen Him as Bast’s son, but it’s possible He could be Sekhmet’s in some times/places, the way Nefertem is usually Sekhmet’s son but sometimes is Bast’s.
{Kemetic God family tree fun times!)
Devotional 1: Wenut
O Lady of Graces, spring froth at the coming of dawn. Beautiful Hare bounding in the Fields of Osiris, may you reach the light first. Ever watchful at the sun’s coming, ever alert to its renewed birth. As you do to the sun may you do unto me. May you watch me as I slumber and provide me joyous dreams. May you be there when I wake and share cakes of honey and dates. O Queen of Long Grasses, why do play games of hiding? Do you not see that the glow of your being gives you away? Sweet Spring Breeze, come and dance! Let me sing hymns of all of your doings, let me gaze at your unblinking face. Wenet, loved by her people, how great are you? Your skin of gold, ears of wheat, dress of cotton, hair of lapis, perfume of myrrh, eyes of opals, and feet of air- Goddess, O Beautiful Hare. May you abode be in my heart and may your flag fly above my house . Dua Wenut, Goddess Unbound!
A prayer request to Wenut from ebonpyre.
Oh, Bast
I don’t know what you’ve already read, but here are some possibilities:
Per-Bast.org is an old classic source. (In case disclosure is needed, I currently host it but didn’t create it.) You might also find the Bast-related posts on my blog helpful. And of course, there’s always Henadology’s Bast page.
Storm Constantine and Eloise Coquio’s book Bast and Sekhmet, Eyes of Ra isn’t terrible—it’s not strictly Kemetic and has some more generically pagan rituals in it, but most of the information is pretty good, and they have interviews at the back with worshippers of Sekhmet and Bast (at least one of whom was an early member of the House of Netjer). You might find those interesting.
I strongly recommend avoiding Linda Iles’s Bast, Cat Goddess of Ancient Egypt. While there’s some valid info in there, it’s so jumbled up with random non-Kemetic stuff and so lacking in citations that it’s pretty much impossible to tell what’s historically attested and what’s modern invention. Also, the book’s organization is terrible. (Of course, if you’re not all that concerned with following ancient Kemetic traditions, you might find some inspiration here. But seriously. Such bad writing.)
Neos Alexandria is working on a Bast devotional book, but it’s not out yet. I’m looking forward to that one! (And sad that I didn’t manage to get anything done for it.)
And I know you said you feel awkward talking to people, but I’m always more than happy to answer questions. ^_^
This is more than I was expecting and I’m so happy! This was actually helpful and now I have some new things to check out. So thank you very much, and I may come back to you if I have questions. I just need to get over my awkwardness. Haha! But thank you very much, indeed!
You’re very welcome! Always happy to help out with Bast info. ^_^ (One of these days I need to put together a bibliography—I have more sources, but they’re so disorganized I can’t remember what they all are. :P )
Oh, Bast
I’ve been doing research on Bast for the last few months now and felt like I’ve read everything, but I know there is so much more to learn and I want to learn. I’m much too awkward to talk to other people about her and see what I could learn from other people who have worked with her. So I was wondering if anyone could give me more things to read on her? Anything useful would be much appreciated~
shefytbast, can you assist here?

Anput - Wife of Anubis. Though in some events he’s married to Bast, but most cases, he’s not. There’s not a lot of information about Anput. No known parents or origin that i’ve seen at least.
Is Yinepu/Bast a historically attested Thing? I heard about him being her son because she was associated with perfume, including the embalming perfume. I assumed them as a couple was just a modern furry thing.
Not intending to rag on anyone whose UPG is that they’re a couple, I just want to know if there was actually something in lore I missed about them.
I can’t recall ever seeing Yinepu and Bast paired as a couple--or even in iconography in general. Though I suppose it could exist somewhere.
Book, free for download (MET museum has lots of free books actually) Really lavish and lovely illustrations :) Simple introduction to AE culture.
