Little signs you are healing (even if it doesn’t feel like it):

You pause before reacting, even if it’s just for a second.

You notice your thoughts instead of immediately believing all of them.

You have moments, small, quiet ones where things feel a little lighter, even if they don’t last long.

You are starting to recognize what hurts you, even if you don’t know how to fix it yet.

You come back to yourself a little faster than you used to.

You let yourself rest sometimes, without as much guilt.

You are more aware of what you need, even if you struggle to give it to yourself.

You are trying. Even on the days where it feels like you are failing, you are still here, still moving through it.

You have days that feel okay, and instead of them feeling impossible, they feel… real, even if unfamiliar.

You are learning that not every thought deserves your attention.

You are still hurting sometimes, but it doesn’t feel exactly the same as before.

Healing doesn’t always look like big changes.

Sometimes it looks like this, small shifts, quiet awareness, softer moments that come and go.

And even if it doesn’t feel like progress, it is.

You are not stuck in the exact same place you were before.

Something in you is changing.

Even if it’s slow. Even if it’s subtle.

It still counts.

Quick Tips for Writing Descriptions

⟢ PICK THREE DETAILS MAXIMUM! your reader doesn't need to know every piece of furniture. Give them the broken clock on the mantle, the smell of cigarettes embedded in the couch, the water stain on the ceiling shaped like Italy. Their brain will fill in the rest. You're not writing an insurance inventory!!!

⟢ Use the senses people forget. Everyone does sight and sound, but what about: the metallic taste of fear, the way humidity makes your clothes stick, the phantom itch of being watched, that gross feeling when you touch something unexpectedly wet. GET WEIRD WITH IT

⟢ MOTION IN YOUR DESCRIPTIONS!! (Please?) don't just tell me the curtains are blue, tell me they're "shuddering in the AC blast" or "hanging limp like they've given up." Static description is a sleep aid. Make things MOVE

⟢ Your narrator's voice should COLOR everything! A depressed character won't describe the sunset as "beautiful mauve and amber streaking across the sky," they'll think "the sun's dying again, doing its whole performance art thing with the clouds"

⟢ Stop with the mirror descriptions! :( "She looked in the mirror and saw her auburn hair and green eyes" NO. Banned. Forbidden. Find literally any other way. Have another character notice. Show through action. Slip details in naturally. The mirror thing is lazy and we all know it

⟢ Similes and metaphors: COMMIT OR DON'T DO IT! "like" is not a get-out-of-jail-free card. "Her anger was like a storm" is BORING. "Her anger rolled in with the methodical inevitability of a hurricane, and he was standing in a trailer park in Florida" now we're TALKING

MAGA-controlled social media is doing the work of book bans by suppressing support for marginalized authors.

If you haven’t seen much from us on TikTok this week, that’s why. Our recent post celebrating and supporting Trans Day of Visibility was shadowbanned.

It’s nothing new: TikTok has long flagged words like lesbian, gay, transgender—alongside posts about genocide, social justice, and political resistance—burying them under the opacity of “safety guidelines.”

What’s changed is the scale and precision—now with TikTok under the control of Larry Ellison (Trump bff and one of the architects of the surveillance ecosystem), today’s moderation systems are AI-automated with a new agenda.

We’ve already seen posts muted or made unsearchable for using innocuous language—terms like anti-capitalist, fascism (anything the administration aims to deem “domestic terrorism”), even the word "censorship" itself.

We’re not deleting anything, and we’re not softening our language to appease the algorithm. And we’re especially not walking back our support—thank you to everyone who helped us raise funds last week for Trans Lifeline and the ACLU.

A huge part of our community gathers on platforms like TikTok and X. We share work and updates there; we support creators there—many of them queer writers who are still making content and will not disappear.

We just wanted to mention how fucked it is that one of the largest creative platforms is silencing queer language and the politics of liberation: this is blatant censorship being passed off as "content moderation."

Visibility is resistance—and writing, naming things as they are, is the first defence. Trans rights are not up for debate, and the words to defend those rights are not going anywhere. - the Ellipsus Team xo

Happy Trans Day of Visibility, Ellipsus fam! 🏳️‍⚧️

Right now, this day is hugely significant for trans authors in ways that are very real, and (unfortunately) very immediate. Trans people are facing coordinated attacks from fascist orgs and governments; censorship is spreading, and creative voices are being targeted. But despite it all, trans joy and art persists; in fact, it’s only growing louder.

Stories tell truths. Fascism seeks to disconnect people from knowledge, empathy, history, and finally, each other. Through dark times, writers armed with nothing but words have exposed injustice and changed culture by keeping their communities connected. By writing, they kept empathy alive.

Millions of trans, non-binary, and genderqueer people are finding freedom in creative expression—vitally, now more than ever. Trans stories shape the brilliant and beautiful world that is queer art. We need to keep that light visible, and help these stories continue.
