Understanding Your Competition
This week in my course, I have been challenged not only as a student but as an artist, with understanding my competition in the art arena. I had to start with, finding three fellow artists that I considered my competition. I found this hard because there are millions of artists, styles, mediums and I find art to be subjective, which is unique and special to each collector. They either like the art style, or it does not appeal to them. If they wish to invest in art, some do not hold up three pieces of art and compare aesthetics or pricing. Unless they are buying from a well-established artist and the art is worth a small fortune. For others, looking for art they like, I feel it must speak to their soul and they might never know, if the artist will make it big. It is like buying a lottery ticket. Some collectors, collect and support emerging artists work and follow them as they progress and evolve. Some artists don’t even make it big, until they have passed away and their artwork, commands higher prices. A lot of artists tell a story, which expresses their feelings, passions, their family’s generational trauma, political preferences or things they advocate for and/or some even document their healing process. I put a lot of different things in my own art but as an intuitive artist; I add healing properties, that help my fellow Spiritual family to heal and evolve.
As I contemplate the Art World, potentially all artists can be my competitors, but I look at them as teachers and mentors. When I researched artists with similar styles or materials, it was a time-consuming job. I decided to pick artwork that resonated, with elements of the art I do and the art I want to create. I looked up Contemporary Abstract Mixed Media Artists, then I researched Resin, Indigenous, Spiritual and Intuitive Artists. I picked three artist, two I have followed for years and another art style that fits nicely with what I do, and the art spoke to me.
I included a breakdown of my three artists, that I like their story, style and what they stand for, and I hope I can use as Art Mentors.
With an examination of Lori Mirabelli’s Shopify website, it is very professionally done. It is designed as an online Fine Art Gallery, where you can purchase her artwork. There are many interesting features on her website, and Lori shares her experience; as a Canadian artist and offers an Artist Mentorship Program and an online book; The Business of Abstract Art - From Passion to Profit. On her website is a list of Past Art Exhibits and many Art Galleries that represent her, so she is well represented on the internet and in the world (Mirabelli, 2026).
Reviewing Lori Mirabelli’s market positioning, I have found a well-established online identity, starting on Etsy in 2008 and I have enjoyed following her website (Smiley, 2024). Lori is currently being represented by many Art Galleries, but her art can also be purchased directly by contacting her, on her website (Mirabelli, 2026).
On her Facebook page, you can read through some reviews of her artwork, and I agree that her artwork is, stunning (Hartman, 2022).
I find as artists grow and get established, their pricing goes up. Lori’s prices for her art have gone up since I started following her in 2019, but she is now a full-time established artist with a recognizable style, and she can command a nice price for her art. A sample of painting cost, for her painting called Street Sense, that is priced for $4,200.00 in Canadian funds with packaging and shipping included. It is on a 60x48 inch, gallery style canvas (Mirabelli, 2026).
The biggest strength, I can identify with Lori Mirabelli; is she keeps working on art and marketing it. I don’t see any weaknesses, and I value her sharing her experience with other artists, but I would like to see Lori, do more types of art. I have seen some changes in her art, but she has stayed really close to her original style. With learning more about this incredible artist, I know I would like to purchase her online book and follow the step to her success. I also know, if I focus and keep being persistent on doing art, keep learning and marketing Sherry Turner Art, I will build my own online identity.
I love spending time on Flora Bowley’s website, with all her incredible intuitive artwork. The website is incredible and done very detailed. It is an inspiration to all artist, on what they can achieve if they put hard work into their creative process.
Her online identity; as an intuitive artist is well established, and I was impressed she was interviewed on The Shift Network, for the Enlightened Business Summit (Bowley, 2026).
As I read some of the reviews on Facebook, people are expressing positive words about Flora Bowley, and she is a wonderful artist (McDonell, 2024).
As an abstract intuitive artist, Flora does a lot of artwork. A sample of her work is, Holly Breath 60x48” gallery style canvas priced at $6,800.00 (Bowley, 2026).
A Portland, Oregon celebrated artist, author and community builder, she has achieved many successes. She has been in the press, done book contributions, blog features, interviews and a ton of podcasts (Bowley, 2026). She has many streams of income, such as, she is an author of two books, and she sells original artwork, paper and canvas prints, online courses and retreats. Her website is incredible and she has 30 years of experience in the art world (Bowley, 2026). She is an inspiration to me, as a spiritual and intuitive person that has followed her dreams and assist a lot of artists to find their passions.
There are so many strengths to identify but as a woman entrepreneur, she is very motivated, driven and inspiring. Flora’s intuitive ability is not only used for her art, but you can see by her success, she puts trust in all she does. I see no weakness, in this inspiring woman and I would love to follow her steps, to experience some of her success. I am eager to do some of her online courses.
I just found Amanda Pierce and I was excited she is an Indigenous artist from Chelsea, Quebec. She is a Cree Metis Contemporary Abstract Encaustic Artist (Pierce, 2026). Her website is nice, but a lot simpler than the other two artist I researched.
She has a very defined style, and she has established herself, as a Cree Metis artist and encaustic teacher. It is nice being a part of the Indigenous community, surrounded by a large family and so many creative inspiring people.
I found a picture of a review; that Amanda was, a truly amazing artist (Belcourt, 2025).
I found the largest painting called, Elk Island. A large 40x30 inch gallery wood panel, priced at $3,200.00 with packaging and shipping included (Pierce, 2026).
I noticed a lot of artists, after they get some experience and establish themselves as an artist; they start teaching others. Amanda offers courses, online and in person.
I feel one of Amanda's strengths, is in her development of her art. I feel it is unique and there are different substrates to work with. Also, some of her procedures would be dangerous, such as the use of flame torch to heat the medium at each level. She does unique paintings but to build the sculptures would take a lot of skill, holding and balancing the different elements, as she torched it. I am looking forward to experimenting with this medium. As to weaknesses, I would think Amanda’s marketing is weak. I am challenged presently in this area but as an Indigenous artist, perhaps she is getting a lot of support with word-of-mouth clients. The other two artist I researched are known internationally, so you can find them all over the internet.
I really enjoyed this assignment, Understanding Your Competition. It allowed me to think about things in a different light, especially looking at the strengths and weaknesses of different artists. I can plan, better for a successful art business. I was also encouraged; that if I am persistent and patient, I can grow as an artist. I also learned, I should consider multiple streams of income, so I should make a list of different ways I can make money with my art business. The biggest thing I learned with researching these three artists, is they wore many hats. Some artist can hire people, as they grow but some art business owners must do their own bookkeeping, marketing, web design, packing and shipping. With this said, we must have a balance in all areas of our business. And I can learn my competitors and strive for excellence.
