Shield Rumrunner: A 1920s Marvel AU

    The year is 1924. The hems are shorter, the music is wilder, and the streets of America are drier…

                                         Or so some think.

   After the recent passing of of the 18th Amendment, many have taken the law—and liquor—into their own hands.

"Shield" is the name of a secret juice joint, nestled behind a drug store. All it takes is a business card with the stamp of an eagle on it to open one of two hidden passageways and descend into the glowing gaiety of New York’s hottest speakeasies.

Opened in 1922, Shield has been growing and thriving in the alcoholic anarchy, without much competition. However, as prohibition continues to settle and fester and in the deepest darkest parts of people’s hearts, competing juice joints began to pop up everywhere. Soon, Shield was no longer everyone’s favorite speakeasy.

Crowds are thinning, and Shield’s owner is none too happy with that.

Of course, Shield doesn’t run itself. There are several employees that help the juice joint along and are trying to keep it afloat.

The Muscle (Full)

One of Shield’s more dangerous jobs. The Muscle ensures the booze gets from Point A to Point B, and sometimes keeps the peace in the speakeasy itself.

(Brief) Bio:

Immigrating from Russia at age fifteen meant learning an entirely new culture and language in the drop of the hat. Though it took him some time, James Barnes, better known as Bucky to his fellow immigrated neighbors, hit the ground running. By eighteen, he joined the Hydra speakeasy once his parents passed away, and began to make a name for himself.

After a few killings out of defense - a few for the fun of it (some claimed, though he denied it) - Bucky was nicknamed the Winter Soldier in favor of his heritage. He grew to despise his work, but it was the only skill he had left, and if he did abandon it, there was nothing in the world for him. Hydra was not the sort of speakeasy that was well-known for its welcome; it was for those who were as tainted as he had become.

A particularly brutal night made him drop his work completely; seven years in Hydra were forgotten as he disappeared off the radar entirely, choosing to abandon his past in favor of a clean slate where he would start over. His former memories were suppressed entirely as if his red ledger was wiped clean, but deep inside him he knew that he would never be justified for the things he had done.

It wasn’t until he was found by Else - a former neighbor in his old apartments - that he got back on his feet. He did so by joining the SHIELD speakeasy, that left him unsettled, but he’s stayed ever since, working the same playing field, but with an entirely new style.
