‐ PROLOGUE.

to say you and megan were close was an understatement. from pizza-eating races after go-karting as teammates when you were kids, to causing a ruckus while rooming together on trips and getting in trouble with hotel staff in the close years after, to having your first semi-real competition on who was better at cycling when you two were 15; you guys were practically conjoined at the hip.

megan was so deeply apart of you that sometimes, it was truly hard to tell where you ended and she began. that moment, the one so many years ago where she'd approached you on that playground, cheeks blown up from a grin, eyes sparkling as she plopped down next to you in that damned sandbox, had started something almost otherworldly. and if you asked megan? she'd do it again every single time.

the type of love you two shared for each other, the kind that had started in the sandbox and was destined to make it to the nursing home — had always worked. you two just made it work. you always had, and both your parents had always bragged that it always would.

learning the both of you shared dreams of racing, all those years ago, then turning that into climbing the motorsports ranks together: starting go-karting and being teammates there, winning together, going up to f3 & f2 to follow the dream of getting into f1 together; of being teammates and racing against each other there — had all felt like the universe had aligned to the last minute detail, just for the two of you.

sure, you guys had your fair share of fights, days where megan had went home crying after a loss, ones where you'd went home upset all the same. but for the most part, it had felt like heaven on earth to you. and then, just like you two had dreamed, the two of you had made into f1. together. and that euphoric feeling doubled. and then just as quick, tripled as Megan won her first world drivers' championship.

hidden from your parents and the public, was the fact that somewhere along that way, the lines between friends and more had blurred horribly. that night megan had won her first wdc? lots and lots of champagne that cut the string on all the a-bit-too-close-to-still-be-platonic bullshit back-and-forth you two had been doing for years. before the clock had even hit midnight, the two of you were lip-locked like you were connected by super glue.

it was hard to describe or even pinpoint what you two had. the two of you had never actually talked about it, described it, or even labeled it in the barest minimum. it just happened, and you two went along with it. it was comfortable, almost safe. but damn if you didn't want it addressed.

but for right now, you were okay with not mention anything. if it meant the secret post-race kisses, those lingering looks, and holding hands under the table would continue, then keeping quiet was just fine with you.

and now? when you two had actually become teammates this year? words couldn't even begin to describe how over-the-moon you were with life. everything was near-perfect. all you yearned for now, was to win a wdc trophy of your own. to hold that trophy tight in your arms as you stood next to the girl you loved holding hers.

and by the gods, were you determined to get it.
