Oh, you would like to hear what we're thinking, wouldn't you? He raises the blade above his head, dangling it by the handle in front of his eyes. But I think we hold the power right now.

Last but not least of my Dessendre siblings rant: Verso
Verso the Painter - we don't know that much about the real Verso, at least not the adult one who died for his sister. We know he had created the canvas, that he cared for his siblings. What we do know are his attitudes from the time he was painting the canvas, back when he was much younger and saw it as a part of his playtime with his sister. He was a caring young boy, that had fun making a version of his dog that was his best friend, made a race of creatures that looked like brushes and loved fighting. He made wonders and adventures and he cared deeply for his creations. After all, he saw them as their own beings (as one of the parts of his fading soul tells us). He treated them as real friends.
Gustave - a version of an older brother that appears in Maelle's way. Just like with Emma, I find it hard to say if he wasn't in some way pushed by Aline to take care of her daughter in that new world. He is awkward, extremely polite and loves joking around. He's an inventor that cares for his young wards. He's loyal to a fault, and when he thinks his sister is dead he wants to follow her. When pressed he never says the Expedition is more important than his sister. In the end, he is willing to sacrifice his life for Maelle, to lose the Chroma converter and doom the Expedition just so she can live.
Visages/He Who Guards Truth With Lies - the version of Verso that his father sees. Someone who hides his real feelings to take care of those around him, who is scared of showing his real pain even through his art (as Renoir talks in one of his recordings). He experiences deep emotions that he hides even from himself. Funnily enough, it's Sciel who is true to herself fully that is capable of seeing through him. Just like she seems to cut through Painted!Verso's bullshit.
Verso the Painted - the journey this Verso went through it truly heartbreaking. He had started not knowing about his linage, about the truth of his world. He was an inventor, he joined the risky mission to help those that may have stayed behind. Only that when he did learn about the Paintress's role and couldn't convince the other members of the Expedition he had to kill them. At that point he still believed that the Paintress should continue to paint, he believed that "We deserve to live. All of us. We deserve to exist.". Only at some point he had lost that belief. He tells the Expedition 33 that Renoir doesn't want to lose his immortality while omitting the death of everyone around them as another collateral. At some point, he must have changed his mind, he must have decided that quickening the end was the best solution. Did he ever think about pushing Painter!Renoir from the canvas? At what point did he realize that keeping Aline in the painting is killing her? After his first meeting with Clea he was still on the Painted!Renoir side. He must have changed his mind at some point - after all it was a choice between his mother vs his father and two sisters. By choosing Aline he was killing other members of the painted family. Maybe it was the suffering she put them through, the way Alicia was tortured for sins she didn't commit, Renoir became an executioner, and Clea was gone while no one seemed to care.
He took it upon himself to bear the knowledge of what the end would entail. Monoco and Esquie were by his side through the whole process but he was clearly the driving force, a man willing to serve himself in two just to make people around him less sad. How much must it hurt him to tell Maelle the truth that he could have saved Gustave? To finally break the mask just a little. Not enough to tell her about the oncoming end, but to admit that he had caused her pain. Maybe this let him finally find the strength to tell her the biggest truth - he doesn't want to go on.
Renoir told his son, his real son that he won't ever be a true artist until he sees the truth about himself. In his last act Verso asks himself, the last strands of Verso the Painter soul if he wants to stop painting and the child nods. The masks are finally gone.
